The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection of Leawood, Kansas, United States Weekly eNote from Senior Pastor Adam Hamilton for Friday, 15 May 2015
Dear Resurrection Family,
This is a big weekend for my family. Rebecca, our youngest daughter, turns 25 today (she was two weeks old when I was sent to start the Church of the Resurrection!). One of my younger brothers, Aaron, graduates from UMKC this evening. And tomorrow Danielle, our oldest, graduates from the University of Kansas Law School. It is an exciting time for us and for so many other families who have children, siblings or friends graduating.
This weekend my sermon will focus on what Jesus would say if he were invited to give a commencement address to high school or college graduates. Whether you are just graduating, or like many of us you can barely remember when you graduated, join us for worship. I’m confident Jesus’ words will challenge and inspire you. I want to encourage our graduates to be sure to be here – if graduation is Saturday, join us Sunday. If it is Sunday morning, join us Saturday or Sunday night. We have a small but meaningful gift for each person graduating from high school or college this spring. Invite your family and friends to join you!
Last week I challenged you to find a way to be Jehosheba and make a difference in a child’s life. If you are interested in serving as a Jehosheba to an orphan here in Kansas City, please check out our A Child's Hope Foster Ministry, at their info meeting on Thursday, June 18 7-8:30 pm, Room B207. Learn more on the website. Opportunities range from hosting kids in your home 24/7 to serving an hour once a year! Come see how you can make a difference and be a hero in a vulnerable child's life!"
Next week is an important Blood Drive on Monday, May 18 and Tuesday, May 19 as we prepare for the Memorial Day weekend. Blood drives held in May are critical and help build the community’s blood supply before the summer months, Resurrection has also partnered with Delete Blood Cancer to host a bone marrow donor registration in conjunction with the Blood Drive. I hope you’ll consider donating on either Monday, May 18, or Tuesday, May 19. You can walk-in to the Narthex in Building B anytime between 8 am and 8 pm to donate or go online to make an appointment.
Next weekend we have a living legend preaching at Resurrection. Bishop Sundo Kim to many, is the Billy Graham of Korean Methodism. He was sent to pastor the Kwang Lim Church in Seoul when the church had less than 200 people. When he retired 40 years later the church was the largest Methodist Church in the world with over 75,000 members (Resurrection is the largest United Methodist Church in the world, but Kwang Lim is a member of the Korean Methodist Church and it remains the largest Methodist Church of any denomination in the world). Bishop Kim led the church to be engaged in launching mission churches around the world. He is 85 years old and is making a special trip to preach here at Resurrection and to deliver the commencement address at Saint Paul School of Theology. He’ll preach Sunday at 9, 10:45 and Sunday night at 5 with other pastors preaching Saturday night and 7:45 at Leawood. You won’t want to miss this.
In June I will be on a panel discussion as a part of The Village Square – a forum for discussing important issues of our time. The event is happening at UMKC and other panelists include Sen. John Danforth, Terry Nelson (founding partner of FP1 Strategies) and Margaret Talev (White House correspondent for Bloomberg). The topic will be The Politics of Personal Destruction and is focused on the often destructive nature of political discourse in our country today. I’d love for Resurrection members to join us for this evening; it should be very interesting. It will sell out so register today by clicking this link.
Finally, I want to mention Saint Paul School of Theology, located on our Leawood campus, is searching for a Development Officer. This is an important position for the seminary and I couldn’t help but think that there may be Resurrection members who might have experience in this area and who would be excellent and find this to be a rewarding position. Click here to find out more. We also have several open positions on the staff at Resurrection. To see the employment opportunities at the church click here. We also have a job board where employers can post job openings. Take a look here.
See you in worship!
