Reflecting God - Embrace Holy Living from The Global Church of the Nazarene of Lenexa, Kansas, United States for Tuesday, 2 June 2015 - "God’s Sovereign Symphony" Scripture: Psalm 33:1 Rejoice in Adonai, you righteous!
Praise is well-suited to the upright.
2 Give thanks to Adonai with the lyre,
sing praises to him with a ten-stringed harp.
3 Sing to him a new song,
make music at your best among shouts of joy.
4 For the word of Adonai is true,
and all his work is trustworthy.
5 He loves righteousness and justice;
the earth is full of the grace of Adonai.
6 By the word of Adonai the heavens were made,
and their whole host by a breath from his mouth.
7 He collects the sea waters together in a heap;
he puts the deeps in storehouses.
8 Let all the earth fear Adonai!
Let all living in the world stand in awe of him.
9 For he spoke, and there it was;
he commanded, and there it stood.
10 Adonai brings to nothing the plans of nations,
he foils the plans of the peoples.
11 But the counsel of Adonai stands forever,
his heart’s plans are for all generations.

"God’s Sovereign Symphony" by Author: Kelsey Beck
The musical motif of today’s psalm recalls an imaginative allegory of the creation story: In The Magician’s Nephew (the first book in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia), Aslan, the mighty lion who represents God, sings the land of Narnia into being. With every note, a new creature arises in praise of Aslan. It is a fitting representation of God’s creative, sustaining relationship with the world. In many ways, today’s psalm complements yesterday’s: With each new revelation of the Lord’s character, we are increasingly attuned to what hymn writer Maltbie Davenport Babcock called “the music of the spheres”— the universe’s resounding testimony to the sovereign power of God. As the psalmist proclaims, the most fitting response is to “sing joyfully” back to our Creator who, since the beginning of time, has had good plans for His people. As we marvel in the grand symphony of His creation, God invites us to join in His song of redemption. Today, as you listen for the divine music that sounds all around you, rejoice that God’s intentions toward you have always have been good. He created you to live in communion with Him, and by His sovereign love, He will accomplish His plan.
Hymn for Today: "O God, Our Help in Ages
Past” by Isaac Watts
1. O God, our help in ages past,
our hope for years to come,
our shelter from the stormy blast,
and our eternal home.
2. Under the shadow of thy throne,
still may we dwell secure;
sufficient is thine arm alone,
and our defense is sure.
3. Before the hills in order stood,
or earth received her frame,
from everlasting, thou art God,
to endless years the same.
4. A thousand ages, in thy sight,
are like an evening gone;
short as the watch that ends the night,
before the rising sun.
5. Time, like an ever rolling stream,
bears all who breathe away;
they fly forgotten, as a dream
dies at the opening day.
6. O God, our help in ages past,
our hope for years to come;
be thou our guide while life shall last,
and our eternal home.
Thought for Today:
God’s powerful word is the lyric set to the tune of His redemptive love.
