PETITION- Tell the New York Times: No human being is "illegal"
#Health4All for Monday, 28 September 2015
Undocumented Californians are our neighbors, our brothers, our sisters, and our friends. Our campaign is committed to changing the narrative about undocumented Californians by highlighting their contributions and giving their stories a platform. That is why we join Define American and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) in an effort to ensure undocumented individuals are referred to accurately by everybody, including news networks.
We encourage you to sign the #WordsMatter petition designed to encourage news outlets to prohibit the use of the terms “illegals” and “illegal immigrants.”
This petition just convinced CNN to stop using these terms across their network. But Define American and NAHJ are not done there. While the progress made with CNN is a step in the right direction, many national news organizations, including the New York Times, continue to use “illegal” when referring to undocumented immigrants. Please help us extend this victory to the nation’s largest newspaper by signing the #wordsmatter petition to encourage the New York Times to adopt language that is accurate and humane.
Thank you.
Sincerely,#Health4All Team
