Dear Saint Paul Community,
It was an amazing worship service as we installed Dr. Jeanne Hoeft in the Franklin and
Louise Cole Chair for Town and Country Ministries on September 22. Dr. Hoeft is teaching rural ministries this semester and invited her students to take pictures of their churches, communities, and landscape and share them with her for this occasion. As Dr. Hoeft became the preacher-of-the-day, the pictures filled the screens and were a blend of wistful nostalgia, a peek into the settings of ministry for many of our students and a glimpse of God's creativity in the world.
Thirty-five years ago the Town and Country Ministries Task Force met and began to dream of a significant presence at Saint Paul and the Heartland (Heartland means Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas and Oklahoma). The task force would not take no or not yet for an answer. The General Board of Global Ministries sponsored a Rural Ministry Summit in Nebraska in November 1987 and out of that came the Heartland Network for Town and Country Ministries based in Columbia, MO which Judith Heffernan led for over twenty years. At Saint Paul the Franklin and Louise Cole financial gift allowed us to begin the Town and Country Ministries Chair first held by Rev. Ed Kail. When Ed returned to Iowa, Dr. Shannon Jung held the position until his retirement in June 2014. Now we welcome Dr. Jeanne Hoeft who co-authored what I believe to a required reading text with Shannon Jung and Joretta Marshall Practicing Care in Rural Congregations and Communities.
During the afternoon, Ed Kail convened the Rural Ministries Advisory Team meeting. Some of you will remember Ron Clark, Cleo Kottwitz, Judy Heffernan, Dale Fooshee,
Jack Gregory, Bill Cotton and Marilyn Niemeyer. Also at the table were Dr. Jeanne Hoeft, Dr. Angela Sims, Dr. Elaine Robinson and Cleo's wife Judy Parsons who has been an excellent note-taker at prior gatherings. I had forgotten how much I learn while simply listening, jotting a few notes and watching Ed Kail's magical, gentle and nudging leadership emerge.
I invite you to the installation of Dr. Nancy Howell in the Oubri A. Poppele Chair in Health and Welfare Ministries, on Tuesday, November 3 at 11:07am in the Wesley Covenant Chapel at the Saint Paul: Church of the Resurrection campus.
