Speaker Toni G. Atkins for Monday, September 7, 2015 - Celebrating Labor
Celebrating Labor
Dear Friend,
The American Dream is built on our shared values of self-determination and hard work.
When President Grover Cleveland declared the first Labor Day in 1894, it was in recognition of the significant role that American workers played in building the United States into a thriving economic power.
Throughout our history, workers have sacrificed to put food on our tables and clothes on our backs. It is only right that all workers are treated with fairness and dignity. The American Labor Movement helped create so many important policies that we still rely on today: from unemployment insurance, to child labor laws and creation of the eight-hour work day.
Whether you are celebrating this Labor Day by traveling, enjoying a barbeque, or just relaxing with your family, I hope you will take a moment to honor the accomplishments and sacrifices of all the hardworking men and women who keep California thriving today.
Warmly,
Toni G. Atkins
