Hiring new staff this summer? Changing organizational roles? Similar to the stress a new hire feels when entering a workplace, a hiring manager can also feel overwhelmed when an employee joins an organization. Check out three useful steps for integrating a new employee.

Similar to the stress a new hire feels when entering a workplace, a hiring manager also can feel overwhelmed when an employee joins an organization. Hiring managers play an integral role in the onboarding of new staff.
Last month focused on how new hires could ease the transition into the workplace. This month will focus primarily on how a hiring manager can help new employees successfully integrate into an organization or company.
Step 1: Engage new staff
It is important to realize that a new employee can be extremely nervous starting a new position. Thoughts such as logistics, job expectations, company culture and more likely are consuming the new hire’s mind. Therefore, it is ideal to create a welcoming environment throughout the employee’s onboarding process.
Make sure the new staff member gets acquainted with teammates, management and any other key constituents. Also, don’t forget to discuss minute details such as where the restrooms and breakrooms are located along with any other necessary logistics.
It also might be an ideal time to learn more about the new employee, including their preferred management style (within reason), how they like to communicate (via email or phone) and any other pertinent details.
Step 2: Set clear expectations
Once new hires are acclimated, it is a great time to revisit the position requirements and expectations. Clear communication can ensure employee comprehension, and, ideally, encourage stronger performance.
Employees are hired to perform a job. That role has associated responsibilities in order for the company and/or department to function to its fullest capacity. Ideally, a hiring manager will have shared the expectations of the job during the interview process and gained a thorough understanding of the new employee’s background and how they are a best fit for the position. Now is the time to learn more about the new staff member, set goals, discuss the plan of action to attain those objectives and how evaluation will occur.
Step 3: Allow growth
Continue to revisit expectations throughout the employee’s tenure, ensuring that you clearly communicate any areas of opportunity for development while rewarding success. Additionally, hiring managers should feel proud of aptly hiring candidate(s) who are a strong fit for the company/department.

Brittany Holen had passion and determination to play golf when she arrived to campus in 2012. A member of the Honors College, Delta Mu Delta and a leader in the women's golf team — Holen accomplished that and more. It was no surprise she was named one of nine Outstanding Senior award recipients for the graduating class of 2016.

Holen shows that she’s headed in a positive direction by Rick Vacek

Brittany Holen became one of the leaders of the women’s golf team after making it as a walk-on in her junior year, and she also was president of the Sports Business Club.

Brittany Holen is already a leader well beyond her years. And she plans to keep it that way.
Considering that the sports management major was a member of Grand Canyon University’s Honors College and Delta Mu Delta and was one of the leaders of the women’s golf team, it’s no surprise Holen, 21, was named one of nine Outstanding Senior award recipients for the graduating class of 2016.
“I’ve always done as much as I could inside and outside of myself without spreading myself too thin,” she said. “It’s pretty much who I am.”
Born and raised in Omaha, Neb., Holen played soccer, basketball and golf in high school but concentrated her passion and determination on golf when she came to campus in 2012. She finally walked on to the team as a junior after getting cut her sophomore year.
“My teammates had years of experience behind them, so I had a lot of catching up to do,” Holen said. “I was the first at practice and the last one to leave. It wasn’t easy.”
Holen, daughter of parents who work in the pharmaceutical industry and older sister of Miss Nebraska’s Outstanding Teen 2014, said she credits her family for her ability to thrive without fear.
“Growing up, my parents traveled three or four nights a week, and I was left in charge to take care of my younger sister — that taught me to care for someone other than myself,” Holen said.
But, in doing so, Holen also learned another valuable lesson: balance.
“Even while they worked, my parents still had time for us. So because of them I learned that you can pursue your dreams, your passions and still make time for what’s important,” she said.
During her time at GCU, Holen provided more than 200 students with opportunities to gain experience in the world of sports as Sports Business Club president, assisted in operations of the Chris Paul Basketball Camp in San Diego during her internship with Position Sports, created content for the Basketball Hall of Fame social media accounts, and traveled across the country to assist with Nike brand activation.
This summer, Holen is looking forward to interning at the Olympic Track and Field Trials in Oregon before starting her MBA in Project Management at GCU, which she plans to complete by September 2017.
“I know that’s kind of pushing it,” Holen said. “But I’m pretty open to where God takes me. He is the one who opens and closes doors, so anything can happen.”

Karina Sahagun and her sisters were adrift after tragedy struck their family, but GCU's Donate to Elevate program helped fund high school tuition and provide stability. This year, GCU employees pledged a record of more than $1.5 million to Donate to Elevate, which will in turn help even more families like the Sahaguns.

GCU has provided full-tuition scholarships to 100 qualifying incoming freshmen as part of its new, pay-it-forward initiative called Students Inspiring Students. The mission of the initiative is to promote students helping students and the impact it can have in inner-city schools in Arizona.

The opening of the Grand Canyon University Hotel and Grand Canyon University Championship Golf Course were big stories in 2015-16. These were just part of GCU's community revitalization though. Rapid growth on campus continued too. GCU Today Magazine picked the top 10 stories of growth and impact for the academic year.
