The Redondo Beach, California, United States
1st United Methodist Church eNews: "Youth Banquet & more" This Sunday: Youth Leading Worship--message, prayers and song! for Thursday, 9 June 2016

From Pastor Molly: learning from our youthI'm really looking forward to worship this Sunday. It will be Youth Sunday, and some of our graduating seniors will bring the message; other youth will lead prayers and music and all the parts of worship.
On the one hand, I love that we have a youth Sunday. I know that our young people will share insight about God, our church and themselves that will expand my understanding of God. I know I'll laugh and be moved, watching and listening to these young people who've grown up in the midst of our congregation.
But on the other hand, I'm so glad that we don't restrict the involvement of our youth to this one Sunday. I'm inspired by the way they lead all through the year, as a part of so many of the ministries and groups here at church. Our young people are not only the future of the church; they're the church NOW, and their passions, gifts and perspectives are a blessing in our midst.
Of course, I'm also a little sad, thinking of how some of these young people will soon head off to college. I'll miss seeing them around this place. But I can't say enough about how excited I am that we get to send them out into the world. After all, the church is not limited to this congregation, but gets to go with them wherever they'll go. I give thanks that they've been a part of our church, and that they will continue to be a part of the Church. Thanks be to God![Pastor Molly Vetter]
I hope you'll make a special point to be here for Youth Sunday, and invite others, too! After 10:30 worship, please stay for the Youth Banquet. And next Sunday, too--when we celebrate Confirmation!!
Please note: The church office will be closed Thursday, June 16--some of us will be away at Annual Conference and others will be celebrating graduation!

Romans 12:9-18

Scripture Text for
Romans 12:9 Don’t let love be a mere outward show. Recoil from what is evil, and cling to what is good. 10 Love each other devotedly and with brotherly love; and set examples for each other in showing respect. 11 Don’t be lazy when hard work is needed, but serve the Lord with spiritual fervor. 12 Rejoice in your hope, be patient in your troubles, and continue steadfastly in prayer. 13 Share what you have with God’s people, and practice hospitality.
14 Bless those who persecute you — bless them, don’t curse them! 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be sensitive to each other’s needs — don’t think yourselves better than others, but make humble people your friends. Don’t be conceited. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but try to do what everyone regards as good. 18 If possible, and to the extent that it depends on you, live in peace with all people.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for
Romans 12:9-18
Verse 9
[9] Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.
Having spoken of faith and its fruit, Romans 12:3, etc., he comes now to love. The ninth, tenth, and eleventh verses refer to chapter the seventh; the twelfth verse to chapter the eighth; the thirteenth verse, of communicating to the saints, whether Jews or gentiles, to chapter the ninth, etc. Part of the sixteenth verse is repeated from Romans 11:25.
Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good — Both inwardly and outwardly, whatever ill-will or danger may follow.
Verse 10
[10] Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;
In honour preferring one another — Which you will do, if you habitually consider what is good in others, and what is evil in yourselves.
Verse 11
[11] Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
Whatsoever ye do, do it with your might. In every business diligently and fervently serving the Lord - Doing all to God, not to man.
Verse 12
[12] Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;
Rejoicing in hope — Of perfect holiness and everlasting happiness. Hitherto of faith and love; now of hope also, see the fifth and eighth chapters; afterwards of duties toward others; saints, Romans 12:13 persecutors, Romans 12:14 friends, strangers, enemies, Romans 12:15, etc.
Verse 13
[13] Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.
Communicate to the necessities of the saints — Relieve all Christians that are in want. It is remarkable, that the apostle, treating expressly of the duties flowing from the communion of saints, yet never says one word about the dead.
Pursue hospitality — Not only embracing those that offer, but seeking opportunities to exercise it.
Verse 14
[14] Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.
Curse not — No, not in your heart.
Verse 15
[15] Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.
Rejoice — The direct opposite to weeping is laughter; but this does not so well suit a Christian.
Verse 16
[16] Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
Mind not high things — Desire not riches, honour, or the company of the great.
Verse 17
[17] Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
Provide — Think beforehand; contrive to give as little offence as may be to any.

"Cast Thy Burden Upon The Lord" by Felix Mendelssohn
Lyrics by
Julius Schubring, 1806-1889; adapted from the Psalms
Cast thy burden upon the Lord,
And he shall sustain thee.
He never will suffer the righteous to fall.
He is at thy right hand.
Thy mercy, Lord, is great
And far above the heav'ns.
Let none be made ashamed
That wait upon thee.

Pastor Molly's sermon last Sunday focused on Unity in the Body of Christ and in one of her sentences she said, “I love to be with people who think like I do.” It got me thinking about my late friend who lived in Hermosa Beach, was a retired school teacher, Navy pilot, FBI Agent, etc. Bob Content made it his senior life's work to teach children this phrase “How to disagree without being disagreeable.” He printed up folders to pass out when he gave talks and I think our political wars should keep this phrase in mind as well. At any rate, not all of us in this congregation agree on every detail, but almost always our disagreements seem to be mentioned without rancor. One more emphasis of this line goes like this, “TRY TO DISAGREE WITHOUT BEING DISAGREEABLE.'
Last Sunday's pot-luck luncheon was just about the best food we have ever had for a pot-luck. Thanks to all who brought food. Today (6/12) we have a chance to honor graduates from all types of schools and universities. I'm told it's an Hawaiian meal so that should be great. It's a big deal for many of them and though it was many years ago, I remember some of my graduation moments and how proud my family was.
Each Sunday people ring our tower's church bell to let the community know we are here waiting for them should they need a place to worship. I've had people tell me how much they appreciate hearing our Sunday morning bell ring. I have been told by others that sometimes they get annoying comments about being awakened by the bell. However, for hundreds of years in America and other countries it has been an announcement that, yes, we invite you to attend our church services where we praise Jesus and honor the God of all mankind. Think of that when next you hear our bell. Note: Lately it has been rung by Nancy and David Klinger'sgrandchildren and they really love to do it. Others are welcome to step in and participate by talking to our ushers and/or staff.

Youth Summer Volunteer Internships
We have a number of volunteer internships for youth at church this summer. We expect this to help young people develop in all sorts of helpful ways. They'll learn work skills, develop their own identity, and be in a supportive church environment.
Some internships will install a computer network at church (we're getting Wifi!), while others help at the Performing Arts Camp.
Our Church Foundation: The Gift that Keeps Giving
We are excited to share that since January 1, we have received $9,514.25 in income for our church budget from our Endowment Fund. These dollars help our church budget pay for our ministries. Over the years, members have made gifts to the Endowment Fund from estates, wills, trusts and donations, and all gifts are invested.
Because this is an endowment, only income is withdrawn and the principal is retained to grow and continue to produce income. Thus gifts to the Endowment Fund keep on giving to our church’s program.

The Endowment Fund which is monitored by the Endowment Committee has grown to a value of $1,495,005.11. That is a 5.04% increase for the year to date. Funds are invested in professionally managed stocks and mutual funds. The committee meets regularly to review the status.
Please consider being a part of this by including the Endowment Fund of First United Methodist Church Redondo Beach in your will or trust. It will become the gift that keeps on giving. Information on the fund’s investments is available in the church office or by contacting the committee, which is chaired by Whit Walter.

Elijah is an oratorio by Felix Mendelssohn, which tells the story of Elijah as told in the Books of Kings, and with a few Psalms sprinkled throughout. It was commissioned by the Birmingham Festival and was written first in German, Mendelssohn’s native tongue, then promptly translated into English, which he spoke equally well. The English version was premiered at the Birmingham Festival in 1846 and then 2 years later the German version was premiered a few months after Mendelssohn’s death in 1848. It was modeled after the music of Bach and Handel, which he revered. In fact, Mendelssohn produced the first performance of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion since the composer’s passing, and was responsible for the revival of interest in Bach’s music. This week’s anthem – Cast Thy Burden Upon The Lord – is an island of calm and tranquility in the ocean of Elijah. It’s simple, sweet and undemanding, with a message of hope. We thought it would be best to do something low-key, considering the fireworks the youth band is undoubtedly going to unleash upon us that morning.
Each time the youth band plays, I marvel at the good fortune of this church…..the good fortune to have someone as competent, as selfless and as involved as Brad Taylor, who works with the band and organizes them when they play for us on a Sunday morning….the good fortune to have such talented and involved young people who are capable of forming a band and playing an entire service of music for us (believe me, I know how hard that is)….the good fortune to have someone as marvelous as Stephen Hale, who the kids obviously adore and who connects with them so effortlessly. Young people are the future and lifeblood of any church, and this church has an abundance of lifeblood – one might even call it an embarrassment of riches. We’ll have an opportunity to get everyone together for a big sing on Father’s Day next week. The song is We Are The World, with the children singing the big tune, the youth singing the solos, the adult choir singing backup harmonies and the band providing the support. It will be an event.
Last Sunday, the “Famous Postlude” was Linus and Lucy, composed by Vince Guaraldi for the TV special A Charlie Brown Christmas. We’ve played it before, but that tune is SO iconic that we just had to include it in our series. It was a kick to see young and old rocking out to the music while it was being played. This week, we have a piece that has shown up all over the place, and I consider to be one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. Be there or be sorry.

RECITATIVE.
OBA.DIAH. Ye people, rend your hearts, and

THE PEOPLE. Yet doth the Lord see it not:
He mocketh at us ; His curse hath fallen down upon us ; His wrath will pursue us, till he destroy us!
For He, the Lord our God, He is a jealous
God ; and He visiteth all the fathers' sins on the children, to thethird and fourth generation ol them that hate Him. His mercies on thousands fall fall on all them that love him and keep His com-mandments.
RECITATIVE.
As ANGEL. Elijah! get thee hence; depart,

ELIJAH. The Lord hath exalted thee from
among the people ; and over his people Israel
hath made thee King. But thou, Ahab, hast done
evil to provoke him to anger above all that were
before thee : as if it had been a light thing for
thee to walk in the sins of Jeroboam. Thou hast
made a grove and an altar to Baal, and served him
and worshipped him. Thou hast killed the right-
eous, ?nd also taken possession. And the Lord
shall smite all Israel, as a reed is shaken in the

THE QUETEN. Hath he not prophesied also

CHORUS. We heard it with our ears.

THE QUEEN. And why hath he spoken in the
name of the Lord ? Doth Ahab govern the king-
dom of Israel while Elijah's power is greater than
the king's ? The gods do so to me, and more, if
by to-morrow about this time, I make not his life
as the life of one of them whom he hath sacrificed
at the brook of Kishon !

CHORUS. He shall perish !

THE QUEEN. Hath he not destroyed Baal's
prophets ?

CHORUS. He shall perish !

THE QUEEN. Yea, by the sword he destroyed
them all !

CHORUS. He destroyed them all !

THE QUEEN. He also closed the heavens.

THE QUEEN So go ye forth and seize Elijah,
for he is worthy to die : slaughter him ; do unto
him as he hath done.

CHORUS.

Woe to him, he shall perish ; for he closed the
heavens. And why hath he spoken in the name
of the Lord? Let the guilty prophet perish. He
hath spoken falsely against our land and us, as we
have heard with our ears. So go ye forth, seize

RECITATIVE.

OBADIAH. Man of God, now let my words bo
precious in thy sight. Thus saith Jezebel ;
" Elijah is worthy to die." So the mighty gather
against thee, and they have prepared a net for thy
steps ; that they may seize thee, that they may
slay thee. Arise then, and hasten for thy life : to

go with thee. He will not fail thee. He will not

SONGS FROM THE OPERAS

(For Soprano)

Edited by H. E. KREHBIEL
Bound in paper, cloth back, $1.50, post-paid
In full cloth, gilt - - 2.50, post-paid

In this volume of The Musicians Library the editor aims to present in chrono-
logical order the most famous arias from operas of every school. Beginning
with songs from the earliest Italian productions, just emerging from the era of
artificial counterpoint, the field is outlined by well-chosen examples from
German, French, and later Italian works, down to contemporary musical drama.
Though none of the numbers is chosen for its historical interest alone, since
the songs are all of the greatest practical value to the singer, still the works
they are drawn from, as Mr. Krehbiel shows in his illuminating preface, do
afford together a comprehensive view of operatic development. The editor's
introduction is elaborate in plan, instructive, and highly entertaining. There
are portraits of the most noted composers represented in the volume. The
original text is given with each number, together with an English version which
seeks to avoid the banalities of many current translations. There are 188 pages
of music.

The California-Pacific Conference has introduced Safe Gatherings, an online abuse prevention program that screens and educates staff and volunteers to help prevent abuse of children, youth, and vulnerable adults in group settings.
Our congregation's staff and volunteers are participating in this program which includes an application, background check, and the online training every three years. (Some of you may have already received invitations to participate in the screening or provide a reference for one of our volunteers.)
We are excited to be a part of this new program as we continue to grow and offer a safe space for all.
