Here are the highlights from this week's news in family caregiving:
The Nation's Health | July 2016
"They are dietitians, physical therapists, home health aides, personal drivers, and accountants all rolled into one. They are family caregivers, and in the U.S. millions of them provide unpaid care to adults and seniors. But the responsibilities that come with that role create physical, mental, and financial burdens that lead to poor health for caregivers. As the U.S. senior population continues to grow, so does the need for public health practitioners and policymakers to address the barriers that family caregivers face."
Star Tribune | June 25, 2016
"Each day, thousands of Minnesota children, some as young as 8 or 9, serve as unpaid caregivers for family members who are too sick or frail to care for themselves. Behind closed doors and out of public view, they perform complicated tasks that would intimidate most adults - from cleaning feeding tubes to administering medications, often alone and without supervision - while helping with a slew of everyday activities like bathing, cooking, and paying bills."
Next Avenue | June 29, 2016
"Five-year-old Caring Across Generations began just as the boomers began turning 65. Today, it's trying to prompt policymakers to address the growing needs of the nation's caregivers and the increasing number of those in the elder boom who require care."
Yahoo Finance | June 29, 2016
"Researchers have also found that the incremental health care and nursing home costs for those with dementia is $32, 781. In 2015, more than 15 million caregivers provided an estimated 18 billion hours of unpaid care valued at over $221 billion. Nearly half of caregivers go back to work, work more hours, take a second job, or postpone retirement."
