What you will see next with the potential Hope United Methodist Church Korean Outreach?
Thank you all for your prayers and for your presence at the various meetings about the Korean Outreach. We have had a number of opportunities, first to hear about potential ideas, then to meet some of the Korean Ministry team.
Our Church Council met in September and took some careful, thoughtful, prayerful steps. We are excited about this and have a sense of awareness of God’s calling. Church Council initiated the formation of connectional committee to prepare for two key steps:
On October 17 we will take the ideas offered by the connectional team, to see if we have a complete enough agreement to proceed with a “soft start.” A “soft start” is like a trial time, when for several weeks we will try out ideas of meeting times and places and experience a living relationship together.
Then a key date will be on Sunday, November 27. That is the date of our Church Conference, and our first vote on affirming an official start of our Hope Korean Ministry. All members of Hope United

Methodist Church are invited to come to the Church Conference and to vote. This should be a prayerful, thoughtful, and inspirational experience.
This Church Conference vote is needed to officially set the ministry into motion. And it is the first of many steps that we will take along the way as we develop our covenant together, as we form relationships, as we practice the building of a true community of love in Christ.
Your relationship with God, the steps you take to build personal relationships, your love are what will allow this relationship to form as we follow Christ together. We thank God for this opportunity and ask God to lead us deeply.
In Jesus Christ,
Pastor Brian

were permitted to legally enter the US because of a devastating earthquake which struck Haiti several years ago. Almost all of them have family in the US, most on the East Coast.
Many have walked through 12 countries and arrived in the US with just the clothes on their backs.
Christ Ministry Center has temporarily
housed, fed, and helped arrange transportation to unite most of them with their families. With no notice, on Sept. 22, the Department of Homeland Security abruptly announced they were shutting off the border, immediately, to Haitian refugees, leaving a number of families split between the US and Mexico and thousands of people on the
Mexican side with nowhere to go.
Imagine how you would feel if this were you and your family. Indeed, they are part of our family — because they are part of God’s family.
Please pray for them. Many thanks to you from Hope who donated food, clothes and money to help the refugees at this very difficult time. To read more, go to their website,
christsd.com/newsStory.aspx?idx=602.
On another note, Hope for Injured Warriors is
actively collecting items for our military service members. In October and November, there will be a table on the patio (look for a red and white striped tablecloth and blue box) with a list of items that are needed at Freedom Station and at Barracks 26. Stop by and pick up a list, then help to fill the box many times over for the troops. The Hope Military Family group is supporting this

Please plan to participate in Alternative Christmas, Nov. 12-13, which supports many of Hope’s missions and ministry groups. This provides an opportunity for Hope members to donate to ministries in the name of a loved one as a Christmas gift, and some of our ministries even have goodies you can give!
Even though the Good Neighbor Center is
moving — to join our friends at Christ
Ministry Center in Normal Heights, no less — we will be filling Thanksgiving and Christmas
food bags for the needy families they serve. Bags will be available mid-October and due back the weekend of Alternative Christmas.

The Special Offering for October goes to Interfaith Community Services based in Escondido.
Hope was one of the founding members of this multi-faith organization which provides much needed services to single parents with children; teenagers at risk; adults with mental, physical and emotional problems; veterans in need; alcoholics; drug addicts and many more.
Last year they helped over 16,000 people in North County!
Thanks to those who donated to Hope’s Disaster Relief Fund, the special offering for September.
We raised over $900 for this worthwhile cause.

Beth Jones Celebrates 35 Years!
Help the Music Ministry celebrate Beth Jones’s 35 years at HOPE for the whole month of October!
Beth Jones has been Hope's piano and organ
accompanist for 35 years, and to celebrate, we are inviting everyone to send her a note of thanks!
What has been most meaningful to you? Include
that in your note of thanks if you wish. Bring it to church and place it in the offering plate any Sunday this month, or stop by the church office anytime and drop it off. Mail it to her directly or give it to the music director, Wendy Kallen. We love our
Beth, and be ready to celebrate her on a surprise weekend this month in Sunday worship!
Thank You to our Joyful Noise Children’s Choir!
Kudos to our wonderful Joyful Noise singers! They sang so well on October 2 for world communion Sunday with our adult choirs! The
music ministry is so blessed to hear these beautiful young voices, and we are grateful to be reminded what it is to be a child of God ... Thank you, Kathy Askins, for your
direction, your nurturing spirit for children, and your love of music. We can’t wait to hear the children again on November 13!
What’s Happening This Month in Worship?
We have Youth Weekend on October 8 and 9! Come and support our youth while they sing, lead worship, usher, greet, read scripture, and provide a great message! They have been
working so hard, and a big thank you goes to our youth director, Lorrie Frost, for inspiring and growing these teens! Hope Ringers will ring on October 16, Mary Lou Flesh will sing a beautiful solo on October 23, and there will be a ladies’ trio on October 30. The SNA band will debut a new song sometime this month, and they sure do
LOVE it when the congregation sings loud and
proud along with them!
All-Saints Weekend is October 29 & 30. A video presentation in honor of those church members who have gone on to be with our Savior will be shown in all services. There will also be an opportunity to light a candle in loving memory of all who have passed. Please send member photos to Denise.mierlot@hopeumc.com by October 17.
Get Ready for the New Youth Choir Debut on
November 6!
Our new youth choir will be singing “Rock of
Ages” with “I Go to the Rock” at all services on the weekend of November 5 & 6. On Saturday
night, they will join the band, and on Sunday, they will sing during the offertory. We are very excited to have them join our music ministry! Most of them will be singing in the Yuletide Christmas choir in December. They will sing throughout next year with the bell choir, Joyful Noise Children's Choir, for VBS weekend, and they will also will be singing “Sabboth Prayer” from Fiddler on the Roof in March. This group welcomes teens from 6th-12th grade, and you may come and join at any time. Email Kathy Askins at

The weekend of Oct. 15th & 16th, we’ll continue our tradition of presenting Bibles to 3rd graders (and to older children who don’t have one) during worship services. Call the church office and add your child’s name to the Bible List, being sure to provide correct spelling and to indicate which
service you’ll attend that weekend. Then mark
your calendar for the Bible Workshop on Sunday, Oct. 23. From 2:00-4:00 that afternoon, we’ll have some fun activities to help the kids learn how to use their new Bibles.

Sunday, Oct. 30 at Noon
Join us for this free fun family event to help support Hope Christian Preschool. Our Hope Christian Preschool students will perform special music during the 10:45 worship service and after the service, the all-church Harvest Carnival will begin. At 11:45, we’ll provide lunch for everyone in Covenant Hall, and a jump house/slide and
other games on the lawn. There will also be a
Silent Auction for Disneyland & Legoland tickets, gift cards for local restaurants, baskets of games and activities, and other gift items on the patio.
This is the Sunday prior to Halloween, so children are welcome to wear their non-scary, non-gory costumes to church. Plan on attending this fun event and supporting our Preschool as we raise funds to refurbish our playground.
