Spiritual Garden (4) with the Bible Reading: Mark 4:18-19 for Saturday, 29 April 2017
Mark 4:18 Others are those sown among thorns — they hear the message; 19 but the worries of the world, the deceitful glamor of wealth and all the other kinds of desires push in and choke the message; so that it produces nothing.
-------
A farmer plants the seeds and a crop begins to grow. But there is still work to do. Part of that work is cultivation. To cultivate means to break up the soil around the plants in order to get rid of weeds and help the plants grow. The farmer must make sure that weeds do not grow and kill the new plants. It is a constant battle to keep weeds under control.
Spiritual weeds in our lives can keep us from growing in Christ. Our Bible Reading today lists three weeds that can keep us from doing good things for God. The first weed is worry. 1 Peter 5:7 tells us to give our worries to God. The second weed is wealth. Matthew 6:24reminds us that we cannot serve both God and money. The third weed is wanting to do bad things in the world. Colossians 3:5 tells us to get rid of the evil things in our lives.
Look at your life today. Make sure these weeds are not keeping God's Word from growing in your life.[Jo Krueger]
"God has chosen you and made you his holy people. He loves you. So your new life should be like this: Show mercy to others. Be kind, humble, gentle, and patient."[Colossians 3:12]
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, help me remove the "weeds" from my life. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Spiritual Garden (3)  Deaf Devo from Deaf Missions in Council Bluffs, Iowa, United States with the Bible Reading: Acts 17:10-15
Acts 17:10 But as soon as night fell, the brothers sent Sha’ul and Sila off to Berea.
As soon as they arrived, they went to the synagogue. 11 Now the people here were of nobler character than the ones in Thessalonica; they eagerly welcomed the message, checking the Tanakh every day to see if the things Sha’ul was saying were true. 12 Many of them came to trust, as did a number of prominent Greek women and not a few Greek men.
13 But when the unbelieving Jews of Thessalonica learned that the word of God had been proclaimed by Sha’ul in Berea as well, they went there too to make trouble and agitate the crowds. 14 The brothers sent Sha’ul away at once to go down to the seacoast, while Sila and Timothy stayed behind. 15 Sha’ul’s escort went with him as far as Athens, then left with instructions for Sila and Timothy to come as quickly as they could.

If a farmer wants a good crop, he does everything he can to make sure that the seeds get into the ground. He can put a sack of seeds on top of the soil, but no crop will grow. Instead, the farmer needs to use the right equipment and prepare the soil. He must make sure that he plants the seeds deep enough so they will sprout and take root.
In Matthew, chapter 13, Jesus said that the seed is the Word of God, the Bible. If a person carries a Bible every day but does not read it and study it, the seed will not grow. Christians need to find opportunities for God's Word to grow in their lives. Some of these opportunities are Bible studies, worship services, fellowship times, camps and Christian workshops.
One good way to have a successful spiritual garden is to study the Bible every day. Our Bible Reading today tells us about the people in Berea. They studied God's Word every day. I hope you will be like the Bereans today.[Jo Krueger]
"They studied the Scriptures every day to make sure that what they heard was really true. The result was that many of them believed."[Acts 17:11b-12a]
PRAYER: Dear Lord, please show me ways I can grow spiritually today. In Jesus' name. Amen.
