They said to him, “The things about Yeshua from Natzeret. He was a prophet and proved it by the things he did and said before God and all the people. 20 Our head cohanim and our leaders handed him over, so that he could be sentenced to death and executed on a stake as a criminal. 21 And we had hoped that he would be the one to liberate Isra’el! Besides all that, today is the third day since these things happened; 22 and this morning, some of the women astounded us. They were at the tomb early 23 and couldn’t find his body, so they came back; but they also reported that they had seen a vision of angels who say he’s alive! 24 Some of our friends went to the tomb and found it exactly as the women had said, but they didn’t see him.”
25 He said to them, “Foolish people! So unwilling to put your trust in everything the prophets spoke! 26 Didn’t the Messiah have to die like this before entering his glory?” 27 Then, starting with Moshe and all the prophets, he explained to them the things that can be found throughout the Tanakh concerning himself.
28 They approached the village where they were going. He made as if he were going on farther; 29 but they held him back, saying, “Stay with us, for it’s almost evening, and it’s getting dark.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 As he was reclining with them at the table, he took the matzah, made the b’rakhah, broke it and handed it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. But he became invisible to them. 32 They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn inside us as he spoke to us on the road, opening up the Tanakh to us?”
33 They got up at once, returned to Yerushalayim and found the Eleven gathered together with their friends, 34 saying, “It’s true! The Lord has risen! Shim‘on saw him!” 35 Then the two told what had happened on the road and how he had become known to them in the breaking of the matzah.[Complete Jewish Bible
The two disciples on the road to Emmaus did not recognize Jesus: "their eyes were kept from recognizing him." They were disheartened because they had hoped this man Jesus they followed was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And now here Christ was right in their midst and they did not know it was him. Sometimes God is active in our daily lives and we do not even know or recognize it. We can sometimes get so caught up in the destination that we don't stop and see God's presence right in front of us in our lives. But when we pause to look back on our lives and reflect, sometimes we are able to recognize where and when God was present--that chance meeting in a coffee shop, that phone call we received, that turn in the road we made. When was a time in your life you felt God was especially present or active?
Present God, we give thanks that you walk along the road of life with each of us. Help us recognize your presence. Amen.

28 As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on.
29 But they urged him strongly, saying, "Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over." So he went in to stay with them.
30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.
31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight.
32 They said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?"
33 That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together.

1 Peter was written by a leader in the early church who lived in a divided society at a time when people were being persecuted. Here the author tells the readers they are called to live a holy life. "Through him you have come to trust in God...so that your faith and hope are set on God." Jesus Christ brings us to trust in God--we are called through Christ to follow and turn back to God. Through Christ--the lamb who died on the cross for the entire universe--we come to love and trust in God. This sacrifice of Jesus calls us to share and love one another deeply from our hearts. Christ cuts to the center of our hearts and inspires us to be vulnerable and risk loving our neighbors deeply--even if we disagree with them or we are different. How are you called to share God's love with others?
Deeply loving God, open our hearts to trust in you and share your love with all. Amen.

22 Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart.

This is a psalm of thanksgiving. The psalm opens with the psalmist's authentic praise: "I love the Lord, because he has heard my voice and my supplications." The psalmist is offering a sacrifice of thanksgiving to God for answering their cries. This is a response of joy to God's abundance and bounty the psalmist has experienced. To have joy and thanksgiving like that of the psalmist is what God's grace inspires us to do. God through the Holy Spirit daily calls us, enlightens us, gathers us and makes each of us holy--it is God who actively brings us to faith. God is here and present in all our lives. We are called by God to celebrate and share with our neighbors this love and grace of God. We are called to share the cup of salvation. How will you celebrate the ways God has called you and been active in your life?
