Prayer Tip: Islam
Daily Scripture
Genesis 17:18 Avraham said to God, “If only Yishma‘el could live in your presence!” 19 God answered, “No, but Sarah your wife will bear you a son, and you are to call him Yitz’chak [laughter]. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. 20 But as for Yishma‘el, I have heard you. I have blessed him. I will make him fruitful and give him many descendants. He will father twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.

Prayer Tip:
Grace is one of the most important things adults can model to children. Showing grace helps children begin to learn how loving our God is. I was shown grace by my parents growing up, and they continue to show it to me as an adult.
In November I wrecked my dad’s car. Yes, I am forty years old—but I wrecked the new car my dad had only had a few months. My mom and I went shopping, and he suggested I take his new Honda Pilot. There is a slight size difference between that and the vehicle I usually drive. I underestimated the size of dad’s car pulling into the garage when I returned home. Not only was he not upset—he wouldn’t even let me pay the deductible.
My dad also showed grace at my Grandma’s funeral in January. My niece, who is four, was struggling to get through the service—banging her feet on the chair, lots of ups and downs, a few inopportune whispers. My dad just put her in his lap and said, “It’s okay. Sometimes it’s hard to stay quiet.” It was such a gracious response.
The love, grace and understanding freely given to me over the years has made it easy for me to understand and accept God’s love and mercy. If my earthly parents, who are flawed (sorry, mom and dad!), can be this loving, forgiving and understanding, how much more loving must God be? I hope this week you will pray for opportunities to show grace to others. May you be a kind presence in an unkind world reflecting God’s love through your words and actions.
Loving God,
You have blessed us with an abundance of your grace and mercy. Help us pay that forward to our family, neighbors and community. We pray that showing grace would become our default setting, our go to response. Thank you for daily opportunities to practice using the gift of grace.
Amen. (Angela LaVallie Tinsley, Resurrection Funeral Ministry)
