The Redondo Beach, California, United States First United Methodist Church eNews for Thursday, 10 May 2018: "Celebrating Mothers" Sunday worship at 8:30 am and 10:30 am.
From Pastor Molly: we are family
The roots of Mother's Day run deep with hopes for peace and a vision of family that's much broader than a nuclear family. Early advocates for a Mother's Day believed that honoring mothers and letting them lead would contribute to the building of world peace.
Now, I'm very okay with giving hard-working moms a day to take it easy, to enjoy flowers and breakfast in bed. But Mother's Day also invites us to go much deeper: how could it change the priorities of the world if we saw all the people of the world through the eyes of a mother's love? What would change if we claimed each other as a part of a common human family?
Our church community is one of the places we get to put this into practice: we become family in Christ. Adopted as beloved children of God, we get to adopt one another as we live into the grace of our baptism. We get to care for one another, and to share life, in joy and sorrow and challenge and change. This is one of the beautiful reasons why I love church: it gives me this amazing community of extended family members. It's an antidote to the growing loneliness of our time.
I look forward to worship with you this weekend.
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
It is a joy to be receiving new members into our church community this Sunday, at the 10:30 am worship service. I hope you will join us in welcoming them!
In Worship This Week
Sunday, May 13:
Psalm 1
Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
Psalm 1:
1 How blessed are those
who reject the advice of the wicked,
don’t stand on the way of sinners
or sit where scoffers sit!
2 Their delight
is in Adonai’s Torah;
on his Torah they meditate
day and night.
3 They are like trees planted by streams —
they bear their fruit in season,
their leaves never wither,
everything they do succeeds.
4 Not so the wicked,
who are like chaff driven by the wind.
5 For this reason the wicked
won’t stand up to the judgment,
nor will sinners
at the gathering of the righteous.
6 For Adonai watches over
the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked
is doomed.
(Complete Jewish Bible).
Psalm 1
Verse 1
[1] Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
Blessed — The Hebrew words are very emphatical: O the blessedness of that man! Counsel - That doth not lead his life according to their counsel, or manner of living.
Standeth — Which notes a more settled abode in it.
Way — In their manner of conversation.
Seat — Which notes a constant and resolved perseverance in their wicked courses.
Scornful — Of those who make a mock of sin, and scoff at goodness and goodmen. Divers observe a gradation in this verse; the following clause still exceeding the former, for standing is more than walking, and sitting more than standing; and sinners in scripture use, are worse than the ungodly, and the scornful are the worst of sinners.
Verse 2
[2] But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
Day and night — Not seldom and slightly, but diligently, and constantly.
Verse 3
[3] And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
Whither — His happiness is not short and transitory, but, like those trees which are continually green and flourishing.
Verse 4
[4] The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
Ungodly — Their condition is far different.
Chaff — They are restless and unquiet: their seeming felicity, hath no firm foundation, but quickly vanishes and flees away as chaff before the wind.
Verse 5
[5] Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
Not stand — Not endure the trial.
Judgment — In the great and general judgment of the world.
Verse 6
[6] For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
Knoweth — He approves, loves, and delights in them, and therefore will recompence them.Perish — All their designs and courses shall come to nothing, and they shall perish with them.

"Mother's Day Song"(Adam Sandler) written and sung by BeachFaith Kids w/Mary Ann Stickler
Mama was the one who reached down and tied my shoelace.
Mama spit on her fingers and used it to clean dirt off my face.
Brush your teeth, q-tip your ear,
Take off your sister's new brassiere.
Watch PBS, not Deputy Dawg,
Don't you eat that Lincoln log.
Oh mama I still don't believe
It's true: the tooth fairy was you.
No way!
I love you maaaaaama,
More than than paaaastrama,
Way more than Jeffrey Daaaahma,
Even more than my NFL paaaaajamas.
Mama always calmed down dad when he got too mean.
Like the time he almost hit me for stealing his juggs magazine.
"A Mother's Prayer" by Foster and Seger, sung by Audrey Yoder.
I pray you'll be our eyes, and watch us where we go
And help us to be wise in times when we don't know
Let this be our prayer, when we lose our way
Lead us to the place, guide us with your grace
To a place where we'll be safe
I pray we'Il find your light, and hold it in our hearts
When stars go out each night,
Remind us where you are
Let this be our prayer, when shadows fill our day
Help us find a place, guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we'll be safe
A world where pain and sorrow will be ended
And every heart that's broken will he mended
And we'll remember we are all God's children
Reaching out to touch you
Reaching to the sky
We ask that life be kind, and watch us from above
We hope each soul will find another soul to love
Let this be our prayer, just like every child
Who needs to find a place, guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we'll be safe
Needs to find a place, guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we'll be safe

Today [Sunday, May 13], being Mother's Day, I am very proud of the fact that my Mother lived to within five days of being 103 years old. She was healthy most of her life, excepting having her gall bladder removed, after which she sore that no doctor would ever cut into her again, and none did. I, like you, therefore owe much to my Mother and her wise teachings throughout my life and so it is appropriate to remember her long and important life. I cannot remember a time when she did not work to help support our family. As you greet or remember your Mother today, May 13, 2018, pray that Mothers worldwide are not just remembered, but respected worldwide, as they should be, for their love and teachings to their children.
At last Monday's Men's breakfast, even though we were a small group there was much conversation about our church, its life and its people. However, while we were talking of various people, we had trouble remembering names and so the subject of past years came up, when all our members and visitors alike were urged to wear name tags. If we were still doing that we would have remembered the names of those we discussed. I remember many years ago when we wore name tags, it was decided that it was embarrassing in some way so we discontinued it. At the same time it was decided (not by me) to discontinue names of people on the photos in our weekly bulletin due to the fact that some people would not appreciate that. How policy changes are made is beyond me, but at the past men's group we all were ready to support name tags and photo captions again for the enjoyment of all.
This coming Saturday, May 19th, 2018, we celebrate Armed Forces Day in the City of Torrance with a parade honoring active members of our country's military and somehow the people that run those things found that I was a World War II Veteran of the U. S. Coast Guard, serving three and a half years, so I was invited to ride in the parade with a few of us from W. W. II. Turns out that we are a fast diminishing group and they need all they can find. This happens to be the first time in my life anyone has made such a request of me for my time of service, which just goes to show that if you live long enough something unusual might happen.

Supporting Moms on Mother's Day
Each year, during our Baja trip, we work with a women's shelter called Fresh Start. This Mother's Day, our church is making a donation to Fresh Start in honor of the mothers in our church.

Pass the Mic: Testimony in Worship
Beginning this Sunday, we are excited to be including testimonies and stories from the people of our congregation in our worship.
Throughout May, members of our Readiness 360 team will speak during worship.
In June, our youth who are graduating from high school this year will share reflections.
You won't want to miss out on what they have to say!

Report from Readiness 360 Team
Our Readiness 360 Team continues to work to help us grow as a church; you've been a part of their work when you shared in Lenten Grow Groups, took part in recent surveys, and more. Now, they are excited to share about why church and God matter to them.
They'll be reminding us of mission: making disciples of Christ for the transformation of the world, and of our vision to be a church caring for one another as Christian community, learning to serve and grow our faith, and responding to the needs of our community and world.

We are hoping for hot weather for the Memorial Weekend so we can rent out the parking lot for beach goers. As usual, we need some volunteers to work the lot Sunday, May 27 (after church) and Monday, May 28. Please email Paul Caldwell to sign up for a two-hour shift. Men, women and youth are welcome. All proceeds go toward the general church budget.
Youth Banquet Tickets!
Each year, our entire church celebrates our youth programs at the Youth Banquet. This year, the Youth Banquet is June 3, right after 10:30 service.
And you're invited! We're serving a catered lunch, so you'll need a ticket. Tickets are available on the patio starting this Sunday! And we take credit cards now!
Youth Sunday!
On June 3, we'll celebrate Youth Sunday! We'll hear from a collection of youth during the service. Youth will lead the music during the 10:30 service. It's going to be great! And afterwards, join us for the Youth Banquet in the Fellowship Hall!
Pentecost Celebration: May 20
Sunday, May 20 is Pentecost. Celebrated as the birthday of the church, this day is all about the Holy Spirit! Just as the Spirit of God appeared like tongues of fire on a crowd gathered in Jerusalem on that first Pentecost, we gather in anticipation that the Holy Spirit will be with us still, inspiring, transforming, surprising.
(A lot of us like to wear red on Pentecost, in honor of the holiday--you can too, if you want!!)
Wanted: Sound Board Operators
First, we would like to thank Todd Potter for his excellent work running the sound board for the past few years. Every week the sound just works and often nobody notices because he is making it happen. We are excited for Todd's new adventure as he heads to college this fall. We will miss you, Todd!
Moving forward, rather than have one person running the board week after week we are looking for 8-10+ people to volunteer to be part of a rotation of sound board operators. There are no requirements other than a desire to help out.
Volunteers should either meet me after church or send me (Matt Parker) an email at mjp.sandiego@gmail.com.
The first training session will occur Sunday May 27 at 8:30 am in the Sanctuary.
Dads & Grads on June 17
We plan to celebrate everyone from our church who's graduated this year during our worship on Father's Day, June 17! If you (or someone in your family) is graduating this year, email Ernie, so we can include you in our bulletin.(We just need name of graduate, their relationship to you, where they're graduating from and where they may be headed.) Note: Our 2018 class of high school graduates will be speaking during worship services on different Sundays in June, beginning with Youth Sunday on June 3!

This week, the children will sing an original Mothers' Day song, one they wrote themselves (under the watchful and expert eye of MaryAnn) in the anthem spot. We are so lucky to have MaryAnn, with her background in composing, arranging, orchestrating and working with kids, with us.
On June 3rd, Youth Sunday, we'll welcome back our youth band with past and current members joining together to lead the service.
Then, on June 10th, we will have our second Composer Sunday, featuring the music of my good friend Sean McDermott.
The Prayer was written by David Foster and Carol Bayer Sager, with input and Italian translations from Alberto Testa and Tony Renis. The original English version was recorded by Celine Dion, and the original Italian version was recorded by Andrea Bocelli. They first appeared in the soundtrack for the movie "Quest For Camelot" in 1998, a soundtrack that I also sang in, and then the duet version was released a few months later on separate albums by both artists. The song won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song, and was nominated for an Oscar in 1999 for Best Original Song and a Grammy in 2000 for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. Celine re-worked the tune in 2004 for her album Miracle, as a solo with new words and renamed A Mother's Prayer.
The band Hillsong United was formed in 1998 from close friends within the Hillsong youth ministry (called "Powerhouse Youth"). So many songs were being written within the youth ministry that it was suggested they make an album. The songs One and Everyday were recorded and released with the annual Hillsong worship album in 1999. They both achieved gold sales status in Australia, and the band has gone on to win five Dove Awards in 2014 and were nominated for an American Music Award and won the Billboard Music Award Top Christian Artist in 2015. Their song You'll Come was released in 2008 on the album The I Heart Revolution: With Hearts As One. The album was first in the trilogy I Heart Revolution project, and reached #29 on the Billboard Christian Artists chart and #8 on the Aria Albums chart.
This Is My Father's World is a familiar Christian poem that was written by New York pastor Maltbie Babcock and published posthumously in 1901. It was set to music in 1915 by Franklin L. Sheppard, a friend of Babcock's and who evidently didn't want to draw attention to himself and signed the score simply with his initials, re-arranged as "S.F.L." Most sources say that he based the tune on an old English melody his mother taught him when he was growing up. You might recognize the initial melodic line if you've seen any of the Lord of the Rings movies. Composer Howard Shore used it as the theme for The Shire. In 1973, Brian Wren wrote new lyrics to this hymn, which shows up in our hymnal as How Can We Name A Love. Brian was born in Essex, England and is Professor Emeritus from Columbia Theological Seminary. Interestingly, he is married to a United Methodist pastor, the Rev. Susan M. Heafield.
