From Pastor Molly:Between
I had a really wonderful time on vacation last week. My family joined some other life-long friends for a week in Costa Rica. We enjoyed beautiful beaches and fascinating wildlife-watching. On our last days, we were able to visit the cloud forest near Monteverde.
There, the trees are dripping with mosses and epiphytes. The fig tree roots grow to form wondrous caverns. Birdsong and rain drops and wind make a mystical symphony. In the lush green and the moist air, life seems to be everywhere, unstoppable.
Leaves in familiar shapes are 100 times the familiar size, which made me feel as though I had been reduced in size and the forest had grown all around me. I found it restorative and reassuring to walk there. It seemed to me that the forest could grow right over top of whatever damage we humans might unleash on her.
I do believe that what we do matters, and that we must take seriously Christ's command to love God and neighbor (and even our enemies). Sometimes, though, I confess that I need to be reminded that there is, in God, a power that is stronger than us, and a life that is more resilient than we can destroy. I believe that there is, in Christ, a light that shines in the darkness and cannot be overcome. The cloud forest reminded me of that.
I wish that you would have an experience of this assurance, as well--to know that you are not alone in your work to bring hope into despair, to offer forgiveness to others, to care for the forgotten and the abused. God is at work in our midst, as a powerful force for abundant life for all God's children.
with gratitude,
Pastor Molly
I'm excited to continue our July sermon series, based on movies--up this week is Star Wars: The Last Jedi!

"Messages from the Movies: The Last Jedi"
Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
2 Corinthians 12:2-10
2 Corinthians 12:2 I know a man in union with the Messiah who fourteen years ago was snatched up to the third heaven; whether he was in the body or outside the body I don’t know, God knows. 3 And I know that such a man — whether in the body or apart from the body I don’t know, God knows — 4 was snatched into Gan-‘Eden and heard things that cannot be put into words, things unlawful for a human being to utter. 5 About such a man I will boast; but about myself I will not boast, except in regard to my weaknesses. 6 If I did want to boast, I would not be foolish; because I would be speaking the truth. But, because of the extraordinary greatness of the revelations, I refrain, so that no one will think more of me than what my words or deeds may warrant. 7 Therefore, to keep me from becoming overly proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from the Adversary to pound away at me, so that I wouldn’t grow conceited. 8 Three times I begged the Lord to take this thing away from me; 9 but he told me, “My grace is enough for you, for my power is brought to perfection in weakness.” Therefore, I am very happy to boast about my weaknesses, in order that the Messiah’s power will rest upon me. 10 Yes, I am well pleased with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions and difficulties endured on behalf of the Messiah; for it is when I am weak that I am strong. (Complete Jewish Bible).
2 Corinthians 12:2-10
Verse 2
[2] I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven.
I knew a man in Christ — That is, a Christian. It is plain from 2 Corinthians 12:6,7, that he means himself, though in modesty he speaks as of a third person.
Whether in the body or out of the body I know not — It is equally possible with God to present distant things to the imagination in the body, as if the soul were absent from it, and present with them; or to transport both soul and body for what time he pleases to heaven; or to transport the soul only thither for a season, and in the mean time to preserve the body fit for its re-entrance. But since the apostle himself did not know whether his soul was in the body, or whether one or both were actually in heaven, it would be vain curiosity for us to attempt determining it.
The third heaven — Where God is; far above the aerial and the starry heaven. Some suppose it was here the apostle was let into the mystery of the future state of the church; and received his orders to turn from the Jews and go to the gentiles.
Verse 3
[3] And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;)
Yea, I knew such a man — That at another time.
Verse 4
[4] How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
He was caught up into paradise — The seat of happy spirits in their separate state, between death and the resurrection.
Things which it is not possible for man to utter — Human language being incapable of expressing them. Here he anticipated the joyous rest of the righteous that die in the Lord. But this rapture did not precede, but follow after, his being caught up to the third heaven: a strong intimation that he must first discharge his mission, and then enter into glory. And beyond all doubt, such a foretaste of it served to strengthen him in all his after trials, when he could call to mind the very joy that was prepared for him.
Verse 5
[5] Of such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, but in mine infirmities.
Of such an one I will — I might, glory; but I will not glory of myself - As considered in myself.
Verse 6
[6] For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.
For if I should resolve to glory — Referring to, I might glory of such a glorious revelation.
I should not be a fool — That is, it could not justly be accounted folly to relate the naked truth.
But I forbear — I speak sparingly of these things, for fear any one should think too highly of me - O where is this fear now to be found? Who is afraid of this?
Verse 7
[7] And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
There was given me — By the wise and gracious providence of God.
A thorn in the flesh — A visitation more painful than any thorn sticking in the flesh. A messenger or angel of Satan to buffet me - Perhaps both visibly and invisibly; and the word in the original expresses the present, as well as the past, time. All kinds of affliction had befallen the apostle. Yet none of those did he deprecate. But here he speaks of one, as above all the rest, one that macerated him with weakness, and by the pain and ignominy of it prevented his being lifted up mere, or, at least, not less, than the most vehement head ache could have done; which many of the ancients say he laboured under. St. Paul seems to have had a fresh fear of these buffetings every moment, when he so frequently represses himself in his boasting, though it was extorted from him by the utmost necessity.
Verse 8
[8] For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
Concerning this — He had now forgot his being lifted up.
I besought the Lord thrice — As our Lord besought his Father.
Verse 9
[9] And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
But he said to me — ln answer to my third request.
My grace is sufficient for thee — How tender a repulse! We see there may be grace where there is the quickest sense of pain. My strength is more illustriously displayed by the weakness of the instrument. Therefore I will glory in my weaknesses rather than my revelations, that the strength of Christ may rest upon me - The Greek word properly means, may cover me all over like a tent. We ought most willingly to accept whatever tends to this end, however contrary to flesh and blood.
Verse 10
[10] Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
Weaknesses — Whether proceeding from Satan or men.
For when I am weak — Deeply conscious of my weakness, then does the strength of Christ rest upon me. (John Wesley’s Explanatory Notes).

"Make Them Hear You"
COAL HOUSE:
GO OUT AND TELL THE STORY.
LET IT ECHO FAR AND WIDE.
MAKE THEM HEAR YOU.
MAKE THEM HEAR YOU.
HOW THAT JUSTICE WAS OUR BATTLE AND HOW JUSTICE WAS DENIED.
MAKE THEM HEAR YOU.
MAKE THEM HEAR YOU.
AND SAY TO THOSE WHO BLAME US
FOR THE WAY WE CHOSE TO FIGHT
THAT SOMETIMES THERE ARE BATTLES
WHICH ARE MORE THAN BLACK OR WHITE.
AND I COULD NOT PUT DOWN MY SWORD
WHEN JUSTICE WAS MY RIGHT.
MAKE THEM HEAR YOU.
MAKE THEM HEAR YOU.
MY PATH MAY LEAD TO HEAVEN OR HELL
AND GOD WILL SAY WHAT'S BEST
BUT ONE THING HE WILL NEVER SAY
IS THAT I WENT QUIETLY TO MY REST.
GO OUT AND TELL OUR STORY
TO YOUR DAUGHTERS AND YOUR SONS.
MAKE THEM HEAR YOU.
MAKE THEM HEAR YOU.
PROCLAIM IT FROM YOUR PULPIT.
IN YOUR CLASSROOM WITH YOUR PEN
TEACH EVERY CHILD TO RAISE HIS VOICE
AND THEN, MY BROTHERS, THEN
WILL JUSTICE BE DEMANDED
BY TEN MILLION RIGHTEOUS MEN.
MAKE THEM HEAR YOU.
WHEN THEY HEAR YOU
I'LL BE NEAR YOU AGAIN.
"Way Over Yonder" by Carole King
Way over yonder
Is a place that I know
Where I can find shelter
From a hunger and cold
And the sweet tastin' good life
Is so easily found
A way over yonder, that's where I'm bound
I know when I get there
The first thing I'll see
Is the sun shining golden
Shining right down on me
Then trouble's gonna lose me
Worry leave me behind
And I'll stand up proudly
In true peace of mind
Talkin' about
Talkin' about
A way over yonder
Is a place I have seen
In a garden of wisdom
From some long ago dream
Oh yeah
Ooh maybe tomorrow
I'll find find my way
To the land where the honey runs
In rivers each day
And the sweet tastin' good life
Is so easily found
A way over yonder
That's where I'm bound
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
A way over yonder
That's where I'm bound
News From Our Members
Last Sunday, as Pastor Molly preached on the subject of the movie “Wonder” I recalled not seeing that movie. And, as an older member of this church I haven't seen this week's movie, “The Last Jedi” or any other she's planning on for her sermons in July. I guess my choice of movies to see is not what most of you readers choose as well. As one gets well into their nineties, as I am, It's very easy to sort of get out of the habit of watching popular movies, and TV as well. It doesn't bother me at all, but some of my senior friends are in the same boat. Not only do I not see as many movies, as before, but I choose most of them lately as those depicting biographies and history. It's just that I find them...

Last Sunday, as Pastor Molly preached on the subject of the movie "Wonder" I recalled not seeing that movie. And, as an older member of this church I haven't seen this week's movie, "The Last Jedi" or any other she's planning on for her sermons in July. It's just that I find them with less killings and gore than others. It's a bit of the same with reading too.
Watching our young people work hard at being the best acolyte in the church has been something of a pleasure. Nowadays the acolytes are often young girls who know what to do and when, but carefully watch each other to be sure and do it correctly. We should thank them personally for their work as it keeps our worship service going along smoothly. By the way, were you ever an acolyte when young? I don't recall my ever being involved in that. I seem to remember at my Methodist Church in Los Angeles, the first thing I did during worship was usher and then sing in the choir. How about you? Later after serving in the U. S. Coast Guard in World War II, I began teaching a Sunday School class of all boys. As a matter of fact, I did that a bit before enlisting in the military in 1942.
I talked to Paul Caldwell about his experience staffing the church parking lot over the Sunday, July 1st fireworks display and then on the 4th itself. Our City of Redondo Beach didn't do our church any favors changing their fireworks display to the July 1st date. Torrance didn't help either with their high charges ($50,000) for police/fire care, so I don't blame the private donors for canceling Torrance Beach fireworks on the 4th of July traditional date. Perhaps, next year?
As the church congregation recognized the retirement, after thirty years of being our head usher, Don Pearson will begin taking it easier Sundays. He has staffed the worship services often doing it himself when a conflict came up and on special events such as funerals and weddings. Things the ushers are asked to do include taking the collection, greeting people with a printed order of worship, making certain lights are on, collection bags are ready, counting the attendance, answering questions, helping the handicapped enter safely and other helps for those in need from time to time. Anyone wishing to help by being an usher now and then should call the office and talk to Ernie, our Administrative Assistant. Most ushers work a month out of each quarter. (And, you don't have to do it for thirty years!)

Options for Children at Church in Summer!
We love having children in worship, and through the summer, we encourage families to attend together!
For much of the summer, our children's Sunday School is on break, but two special things are happening:
-We have special children's activity books available to pick up as kids enter the sanctuary, with things they can work on during worship.
-Some weeks, we also have special Summer FunDay School activities planned: the kids will be invited to meet up at the Passing of the Peace to leave the sanctuary and go for a lesson during part of worship--they'll return for Communion.
Our next Fun-Day Schools will be July 8th and July 22nd!
Pray for our Baja 2018 Team!
Our team will leave Saturday afternoon for Chula Vista UMC, and then head to Mexico bright and early Sunday at 8AM!
For a week, they will spend time serving with Inalienable, working with migrant farmworkers near Vicente Guerrero in Baja California, Mexico.
Pray for the team, but also pray for the people we're going to serve. Service isn't about the server, after all!

Carole King is the most successful female songwriter of the 20th century in the USA, having written 118 pop song hits on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1955 and 1999. She also wrote 61 songs that charted in the UK, making her the most successful female songwriter in the UK between 1955 and 2005. "Way Over Yonder" was part of the album Tapestry, which was her breakout album of 1971. Tapestry enlisted several well-known musicians, including Joni Mitchell, and contained several hits, including "It's Too Late," "You've Got A Friend," "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman." Tapestry was #1 for 15 weeks, was on the charts for 6 years and has sold over 25 million copies over the years. In December of 2012, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and in January of 2014, Beautiful: The Carol King Musical, a musical about her life, opened on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, going on to win 2 Tony Awards.
Ragtime is a musical based on the 1975 novel by E.L. Doctorow. The book was by Terrence McNally, with lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty, and the score includes a variety of musical styles, including marches, cakewalk, gospel and ragtime. It tells the story of 3 groups of people in the U.S. at the turn of the 20th century – African-Americans, upper-class suburbanites and eastern-European immigrants, each represented by an individual, and has several historical figures represented, including Harry Houdini, Booker T. Washington, J.P. Morgan and Henry Ford. It led the 1998 Tony Awards with 13 nominations, although The Lion King(which had 11 nominations) won for best musical. Ragtimeultimately won Tony awards for Best Featured Actress, Best Book, Best Score and Best Orchestrations. The Broadway run closed on January 16, 2000, after 834 performances. The song "Make Them Hear You" is from the end of the show, when Coalhouse Walker, Jr., the character representing the African-American group, convinces Younger Brother (another character) and his men that violence will not solve injustice. Coalhouse charges them all to change society through the power of their words and by telling their children their story.
