Weekly eNote from Pastor Jason Gant for Friday, 20 July 2018 from The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection West in Olathe, Kansas, United States
Resurrection West,
Pastor Adam will be preaching this Sunday as we conclude the ‘Gospel in Film’ series looking at THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, which has powerful music and message throughout the movie - plus a special ‘high-flying’surprise in worship with a silk aerialist and trapeze artist. Yes, you read that right! During the offertory song, “This is Me”, aerial artists will be offering their talent to God inspiring us all! This will be an epic day in worship, so go tell it on the mountain and bring your neighbors, friends, and family for what will surely be a memorable day together!
I want to celebrate the over 40 middle school students and volunteer leaders currently serving on mission in Des Moines, Iowa and our adult mission team leaving Saturday to serve in Columbus, Ohio. The middle schoolers have been working in a 15-acre community garden, building props for a Vacation Bible Camp, and organizing clothing donations for the local community. You can see some fun pics of them in action on our facebook page here. We also received the following facebook message from the director of one of the gardens they’ve been servng this week…
Today I was blessed to have the youth group from your church providing help picking food to donate to food pantries in Iowa. The group picked over 1,500 lbs. of vegetables that will go to help feed people that are in need. It was truly inspirational to witness the positive attitude and work ethic of these youth today. The group not only picked a lot of peppers, zucchini, kohlrabi, eggplant and cabbage, but also planted about a quarter mile of row cucumbers for a fall harvest. I hope the congregation is aware of the wonderful resource the youth group is and recognizes the good they have provided on their trip to Iowa this week. Experiencing this group today makes the overall project worthwhile.
Thank you for supporting the youth group to provide this service.

Way to go middle schoolers! In the words of Pastor Adam, “how cool is that”? The 10 people on the team to Columbus, Ohio will serve children at the Freedom School - a national literacy education movement, serve meals, and work with a charitable pharmacy. These teams are setting the example for us all in serving others with humble hearts this summer. Join me in praying daily for God to equip these teams to be used for God’s good and beautiful work.
Finally, we are less than a few weeks away from the Shawnee Mission Lake Beach Baptism service August 5th at 6pm. You can plan to come early, pay the entry fee and swim until 6pm, when the beach closes. Then we have it reserved for our worship service. This will be in place of the 5pm service that evening, so bring a chair or blanket (and we will have some on hand). You can register to receive baptism that evening at cor.org/west/baptisms. Write “lake baptism” in the notes section of the online form. We will have t-shirts for each baptism participant and any of their family or friends who may wish to enter the water with them in support. We will be baptizing by immersion, then move knee deep for pouring over the head, and finally at the shoreline for sprinkling. We will also have a time when all present can come to the shoreline to receive the mark of the cross on your forehead as we ‘remember our baptism’. Here are a few pics from last year’s gathering.
Looking forward to experiencing worship with you on Sunday,
Jason
