And her son! I will not have this slave-girl’s son as your heir along with my son Yitz’chak!” 11 Avraham became very distressed over this matter of his son. 12 But God said to Avraham, “Don’t be distressed because of the boy and your slave-girl. Listen to everything Sarah says to you, because it is your descendants through Yitz’chak who will be counted. 13 But I will also make a nation from the son of the slave-girl, since he is descended from you.” 14 Avraham got up early in the morning, took bread and a skin of water and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child; then he sent her away. After leaving, she wandered in the desert around Be’er-Sheva. 15 When the water in the skin was gone, she left the child under a bush, 16 and went and sat down, looking the other way, about a bow-shot’s distance from him; because she said, “I can’t bear to watch my child die.” So she sat there, looking the other way, crying out and weeping. 17 God heard the boy’s voice, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What’s wrong with you, Hagar? Don’t be afraid, because God has heard the voice of the boy in his present situation. 18 Get up, lift the boy up, and hold him tightly in your hand, because I am going to make him a great nation.” 19 Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. So she went, filled the skin with water and gave the boy water to drink. 20 God was with the boy, and he grew. He lived in the desert and became an archer. 21 He lived in the Pa’ran Desert, and his mother chose a wife for him from the land of Egypt. Psalm 86:(0) A prayer of David: 1(1) Listen, Adonai, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. 2 Preserve my life, for I am faithful; save your servant, who puts his trust in you because you are my God. 3 Take pity on me, Adonai, for I cry to you all day. 4 Fill your servant’s heart with joy, for to you, Adonai, I lift my heart. 5 Adonai, you are kind and forgiving, full of grace toward all who call on you. 6 Listen, Adonai, to my prayer; pay attention to my pleading cry. 7 On the day of my trouble I am calling on you, for you will answer me. 8 There is none like you among the gods, Adonai; no deeds compare with yours. 9 All the nations you have made will come and bow before you, Adonai; they will honor your name. 10 For you are great, and you do wonders; you alone are God. 16 Turn to me, and show me your favor; strengthen your servant, save your slave-girl’s son. 17 Give me a sign of your favor, so that those who hate me will see it and be ashamed, because you, Adonai, have helped and comforted me. Psalm 17: (0) A prayer of David: 1(1) Hear a just cause, Adonai, heed my cry; listen to my prayer from honest lips. 2 Let my vindication come from you, let your eyes see what is right. 3 You probed my heart, you visited me at night, and you assayed me without finding evil thoughts that should not pass my lips. 4 As for what others do, by words from your lips I have kept myself from the ways of the violent; 5 my steps hold steadily to your paths, my feet do not slip. 6 Now I call on you, God, for you will answer me. Turn your ear to me, hear my words. 7 Show how wonderful is your grace, savior of those who seek at your right hand refuge from their foes. 8 Protect me like the pupil of your eye, hide me in the shadow of your wings 9 from the wicked, who are assailing me, from my deadly enemies, who are all around me. 10 They close their hearts to compassion; they speak arrogantly with their mouths; 11 they track me down, they surround me; they watch for a chance to bring me to the ground. 12 They are like lions eager to tear the prey, like young lions crouching in ambush. 13 Arise, Adonai, confront them! Bring them down! With your sword deliver me from the wicked, 14 with your hand, Adonai, from human beings, from people whose portion in life is this world. You fill their stomachs with your treasure, their children will be satisfied too and will leave their wealth to their little ones. 15 But my prayer, in righteousness, is to see your face; on waking, may I be satisfied with a vision of you. Romans 6:1 So then, are we to say, “Let’s keep on sinning, so that there can be more grace”? 2 Heaven forbid! How can we, who have died to sin, still live in it? 3 Don’t you know that those of us who have been immersed into the Messiah Yeshua have been immersed into his death? 4 Through immersion into his death we were buried with him; so that just as, through the glory of the Father, the Messiah was raised from the dead, likewise we too might live a new life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will also be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was put to death on the execution-stake with him, so that the entire body of our sinful propensities might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For someone who has died has been cleared from sin. 8 Now since we died with the Messiah, we trust that we will also live with him. 9 We know that the Messiah has been raised from the dead, never to die again; death has no authority over him. 10 For his death was a unique event that need not be repeated; but his life, he keeps on living for God. 11 In the same way, consider yourselves to be dead to sin but alive for God, by your union with the Messiah Yeshua. Matthew 10:24 “A talmid is not greater than his rabbi, a slave is not greater than his master. 25 It is enough for a talmid that he become like his rabbi, and a slave like his master. Now if people have called the head of the house Ba‘al-Zibbul, how much more will they malign the members of his household! 26 So do not fear them; for there is nothing covered that will not be uncovered, or hidden that will not be known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim on the housetops. 28 “Do not fear those who kill the body but are powerless to kill the soul. Rather, fear him who can destroy both soul and body in Gei-Hinnom. 29 Aren’t sparrows sold for next to nothing, two for an assarion? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father’s consent. 30 As for you, every hair on your head has been counted. 31 So do not be afraid, you are worth more than many sparrows. 32 “Whoever acknowledges me in the presence of others I will also acknowledge in the presence of my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others I will disown before my Father in heaven. 34 “Don’t suppose that I have come to bring peace to the Land. It is not peace I have come to bring, but a sword! 35 For I have come to set 36 a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, so that a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.[Matthew 10:36 Micah 7:6] 37 Whoever loves his father or mother more than he loves me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than he loves me is not worthy of me. 38 And anyone who does not take up his execution-stake and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his own life will lose it, but the person who loses his life for my sake will find it.John Wesley's Notes-Commentary: Genesis 21:8-21 Verse 9 [9] And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking. Sarah saw the son of the Egyptian mocking — Mocking Isaac no doubt, for it is sad, with reference to this, Galatians 4:29, that he that was born after the flesh, persecuted him that was born after the spirit. Ishmael is here called the son of the Egyptian, because (as some think) the four hundred years affliction of the seed of Abraham by the Egyptians began now, and was to be dated from hence. Verse 10 [10] Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac. Cast out the bond-woman — This was a type of the rejection of the unbelieving Jews, who, though they were the seed of Abraham, yet, because they submitted not to the gospel-covenant, were unchurched and disfranchised. And that, which above any thing provoked God to cast them off, was, their mocking and persecuting the gospel-church, God's Isaac, in his infancy. Verse 11 [11] And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son. The thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight — it grieved him that Ishmael had given such provocation. And still more that Sarah insisted upon such a punishment. Verse 13 [13] And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed. The casting out of Ishmael was not his ruin. He shall be a nation because he is thy seed - We are not sure that it was his eternal ruin. It is presumption to say, that all these who are left out of the external dispensation of God's covenant are excluded from all his mercies. Those may be saved who are not thus honoured. Verse 14 [14] And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. And Abraham rose up early in the morning — We may suppose immediately after he had in the night-visions received orders to do this. Verse 17 [17] And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is. God heard the voice of the lad — We read not of a word be said; but his sighs and groans, cried loud in the ears of the God of mercy. An angel was sent to comfort Hagar, who assures her, God has heard the voice of the lad where he is - Though he be in the wilderness; for wherever we are, there is a way open heavenwards; therefore lift up the lad, and hold him in thy hand - God's readiness to help us when we are in trouble must not slacken, but quicken our endeavours to help ourselves. He repeats the promise concerning her son, that he should be a great nation, as a reason why she should bestir herself to help him. Psalm 86:1-10, 16-17 Verse 2 [2] Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee. Holy — Sincerely devoted to thy service. or Psalm 17 Verse 1 [1] Hear the right, O LORD, attend unto my cry, give ear unto my prayer, that goeth not out of feigned lips. The right — Regard my righteous cause. Verse 2 [2] Let my sentence come forth from thy presence; let thine eyes behold the things that are equal. Sentence — Judgment on my behalf. Come — From thy tribunal. Verse 3 [3] Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress. Proved — Or, searched or tried it, by many temptations and afflictions. Night — When mens minds being freed from the distraction of business, and from the society of men, they act more vigorously and freely, according to their several inclinations. Tried — As gold-smiths do metals. Nothing — Nothing of unrighteousness. Purposed — I have resolved, upon deliberation, as the word implies. Mouth — I am so far from practising against Saul's life, as they charge me, that I will not wrong him so much as in a word. Verse 4 [4] Concerning the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer. Concerning — Observing the works of the men of this age, how wicked they are, I was resolved to take more care in ordering my own actions. By — By the help of thy blessed word. Paths — The customs and practices. Destroyer — Or, of the violent man: such as Saul, and his courtiers and soldiers. Verse 7 [7] Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them. By — By thy great power. Verse 10 [10] They are inclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly. They — They live in splendor and prosperity. Verse 11 [11] They have now compassed us in our steps: they have set their eyes bowing down to the earth; Steps — In all our ways. We go from place to place, to rocks, and caves, and woods; but wheresoever we go they are at hand, and ready to surround us. Eyes — They keep their eyes fixed upon us. Bowing — Couching down upon the earth, that they may watch the fittest opportunity to surprize us. Verse 13 [13] Arise, O LORD, disappoint him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, which is thy sword: Sword — Thy instrument to execute vengeance upon thine enemies. Do not punish me with this rod: let me fall into thy hands, and not into the hands of men. Verse 14 [14] From men which are thy hand, O LORD, from men of the world, which have their portion in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy hid treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes. Thy hand — Wherewith thou dost correct me. World — Who set their hearts upon this world, and neither have, nor desire any other portion. Belly — Mind or appetite, as that word is used, Job 20:20. Proverbs 20:30. Treasure — With extraordinary wealth and glory. Children — When many of thy faithful servants are barren, these are blessed with a numerous posterity. Verse 15 [15] As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness. I will — I do not place my portion in earthly treasures, but in beholding God's face, in the enjoyment of God's presence and favour; which is enjoyed in part in this life, but not fully. Satisfied — The time is coming, wherein I shall be abundantly satisfied with beholding thy face. Awake — When I arise from the dead. Likeness — With the image of God stamped upon my glorified soul. Romans 6:1b-11 Verse 1 [1] What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? The apostle here sets himself more fully to vindicate his doctrine from the consequence above suggested, Romans 3:7,8. He had then only in strong terms denied and renounced it: here he removes the very foundation thereof. Verse 2 [2] God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Dead to sin — Freed both from the guilt and from the power of it. Verse 3 [3] Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? As many as have been baptized into Jesus Christ have been baptized into his death — In baptism we, through faith, are ingrafted into Christ; and we draw new spiritual life from this new root, through his Spirit, who fashions us like unto him, and particularly with regard to his death and resurrection. Verse 4 [4] Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. We are buried with him — Alluding to the ancient manner of baptizing by immersion. That as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory — Glorious power. Of the Father, so we also, by the same power, should rise again; and as he lives a new life in heaven, so we should walk in newness of life. This, says the apostle, our very baptism represents to us. Verse 5 [5] For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: For — Surely these two must go together; so that if we are indeed made conformable to his death, we shall also know the power of his resurrection. Verse 6 [6] Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. Our old man — Coeval with our being, and as old as the fall; our evil nature; a strong and beautiful expression for that entire depravity and corruption which by nature spreads itself over the whole man, leaving no part uninfected. This in a believer is crucified with Christ, mortified, gradually killed, by virtue of our union with him. That the body of sin — All evil tempers, words, and actions, which are the "members" of the "old man," Colossians 3:5, might be destroyed. Verse 7 [7] For he that is dead is freed from sin. For he that is dead — With Christ. Is freed from the guilt of past, and from the power of present, sin, as dead men from the commands of their former masters. Verse 8 [8] Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: Dead with Christ — Conformed to his death, by dying to sin. Verse 10. [10] For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. He died to sin — To atone for and abolish it. He liveth unto God — A glorious eternal life, such as we shall live alsoMatthew 10:24-39 Verse 24 [24] The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. Luke 6:30; John 15:20. Verse 25 [25] It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household? How much more — This cannot refer to the quantity of reproach and persecution: (for in this the servant cannot be above his lord:) but only to the certainty of it. Matthew 12:24. Verse 26 [26] Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. Therefore fear them not — For ye have only the same usage with your Lord. There is nothing covered — So that however they may slander you now, your innocence will at length appear. Mark 4:22; Luke 8:17; 12:2. Verse 27 [27] What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops. Even what I now tell you secretly is not to be kept secret long, but declared publicly. Therefore, What ye hear in the ear, publish on the house-top - Two customs of the Jews seem to be alluded to here. Their doctors used to whisper in the ear of their disciples what they were to pronounce aloud to others. And as their houses were low and flat roofed, they sometimes preached to the people from thence. Luke 12:3. Verse 28 [28] And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. And be not afraid — of any thing which ye may suffer for proclaiming it. Be afraid of him who is able to destroy both body and soul in hell — It is remarkable, that our Lord commands those who love God, still to fear him, even on this account, under this notion. 29, 30. The particular providence of God is another reason for your not fearing man. For this extends to the very smallest things. And if he has such care over the most inconsiderable creatures, how much more will he take care of you, (provided you confess him before men, before powerful enemies of the truth,) and that not only in this life, but in the other also? Verse 30 [30] But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Luke 12:7. Verse 32 [32] Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. Whosoever shall confess me — Publicly acknowledge me for the promised Messiah. But this confession implies the receiving his whole doctrine, Mark 8:38, and obeying all his commandments. Luke 9:26. 33, 34. Whosoever shall deny me before men — To which ye will be strongly tempted. For Think not that I am come - That is, think not that universal peace will be the immediate consequence of my coming. Just the contrary. Both public and private divisions will follow, wheresoever my Gospel comes with power. Ye — this is not the design, though it be the event of his coming, through the opposition of devils and men. Verse 34 [34] Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. . Luke 12:51. Verse 36 [36] And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. And the foes of a man — That loves and follows me. Micah 7:6. Verse 37 [37] He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. He that loveth father or mother more than me — He that is not ready to give up all these, when they stand in competition with his duty. Verse 38 [38] And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. He that taketh not his cross — That is, whatever pain or inconvenience cannot be avoided, but by doing some evil, or omitting some good. Matthew 16:24; Luke 14:27. Verse 39 [39] He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. He that findeth his life shall lose it — He that saves his life by denying me, shall lose it eternally; and he that loseth his life by confessing me, shall save it eternally. And as you shall be thus rewarded, so in proportion shall they who entertain you for my sake. Matthew 16:25; John 12:25. ------- Today's Devotional 1 Corinthians 12:12-25 1 Corinthians 12:12 For just as the body is one but has many parts; and all the parts of the body, though many, constitute one body; so it is with the Messiah. 13 For it was by one Spirit that we were all immersed into one body, whether Jews or Gentiles, slaves or free; and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 For indeed the body is not one part but many. 15 If the foot says, “I’m not a hand, so I’m not part of the body,” that doesn’t make it stop being part of the body. 16 And if the ear says, “I’m not an eye, so I’m not part of the body,” that doesn’t make it stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, how could it hear? If it were all hearing, how could it smell? 18 But as it is, God arranged each of the parts in the body exactly as he wanted them. 19 Now if they were all just one part, where would the body be? 20 But as it is, there are indeed many parts, yet just one body. 21 So the eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you”; or the head to the feet, “I don’t need you.” 22 On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be less important turn out to be all the more necessary; 23 and upon body parts which we consider less dignified we bestow greater dignity; and the parts that aren’t attractive are the ones we make as attractive as we can, 24 while our attractive parts have no need for such treatment. Indeed, God has put the body together in such a way that he gives greater dignity to the parts that lack it, 25 So that there will be no disagreements within the body, but rather all the parts will be equally concerned for all the others. ------- Today's Devotional: Romans 8:10-17 Romans 8:10 However, if the Messiah is in you, then, on the one hand, the body is dead because of sin; but, on the other hand, the Spirit is giving life because God considers you righteous. 11 And if the Spirit of the One who raised Yeshua from the dead is living in you, then the One who raised the Messiah Yeshua from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit living in you. 12 So then, brothers, we don’t owe a thing to our old nature that would require us to live according to our old nature. 13 For if you live according to your old nature, you will certainly die; but if, by the Spirit, you keep putting to death the practices of the body, you will live. 14 All who are led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to bring you back again into fear; on the contrary, you received the Spirit, who makes us sons and by whose power we cry out, “Abba!” (that is, “Dear Father!”). 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our own spirits that we are children of God; 17 and if we are children, then we are also heirs, heirs of God and joint-heirs with the Messiah — provided we are suffering with him in order also to be glorified with him. ------- Today's Devotional: Psalm 65:2-8 Psalm 65:2 (1) To you, God, in Tziyon, silence is praise; and vows to you are to be fulfilled. 3 (2) You who listen to prayer, to you all living creatures come. 4 (3) When deeds of wickedness overwhelm me, you will atone for our crimes. 5 (4) How blessed are those you choose and bring near, so that they can remain in your courtyards! We will be satisfied with the goodness of your house, the Holy Place of your temple. 6 (5) It is just that you answer us with awesome deeds, God of our salvation, you in whom all put their trust, to the ends of the earth and on distant seas. 7 (6) By your strength you set up the mountains. You are clothed with power. 8 (7) You still the roaring of the seas, their crashing waves, and the peoples’ turmoil. ------- Today's Devotional Matthew 11:28-30 Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all of you who are struggling and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.[Matthew 11:29 Jeremiah 6:16] 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” ------- |
Ecclesiastes 5:18-20
Ecclesiastes 5:17 (18) This is what I have seen to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, drink and enjoy the good that results from all his work that he engages in under the sun for all the days of his life that God has given him, for this is his allotted portion. 18 (19) Also, everyone to whom God has given riches and wealth, along with the power to enjoy it, so that he takes his allotted portion and finds pleasure in his work — this is a gift of God; 19 (20) for he will not brood over the fact that his life is short, since God keeps him occupied with what will bring him joy.

Genesis 2:1-3
Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, along with everything in them. 2 On the seventh day God was finished with his work which he had made, so he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3 God blessed the seventh day and separated it as holy; because on that day God rested from all his work which he had created, so that it itself could produce.
