From Pastor Molly: using our gifts in worship
|
|
As of this week, our Choir is on summer break; they'll be back in September. I am so grateful for how they help us worship together. Choir members faithfully rehearse and sing, blending their voices in such a wide variety of styles of music, all to help us worship God more richly on Sunday mornings. I also love that choir members span the generations of our congregation, and include people from different races, cultures and who speak different languages. I love how their singing together is a foretaste of the community we share in God's kingdom.
Our music program is exceptional. With Jim Raycroft's leadership, and an incredible group of talented and skilled musicians and singers, we are able to worship in an incredible variety of musical styles. It's a joy to watch and listen from week to week, as people bring their best to God in worship.
Though the Choir may be on vacation, our worship music isn't taking a break: we are building an amazing list of singers who will share their gifts in worship over the summer. Some of them are beloved and familiar, and others are new voices to our community. This Sunday, Pauline Tamale will sing during our 10:30 worship service.
Many of you know of Pauline's passion for singing, and her commitment to studying opera. Her gift for singing is tremendous, and she's been building amazing skills at using that gift. If you have been around for more than a few years, you may also know how she overcame a health emergency that could have been tragic. (You can watch her tell the story here.) It feels like such a gift to hear her sing, knowing the depth of her faith and the power of her story.
It's a great privilege to be able to worship with musicians like ours, whose devotion to the church and love of God create incredible music!
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
I am very pleased to welcome Kim Edwards back to our pulpit this Sunday, while I am away on vacation with my family. Kim is a graduate of the Claremont School of Theology (CST), and a candidate for ministry in the United Methodist Church. She is currently Director of Communication for CST. A native of Redondo Beach, she has worked in television news, public relations and communications in a variety of settings. I am grateful to have been her pastor in San Diego, and to have her as a friend and colleague now.

"We Can Fly Together"
Kim Edwards, preaching
Matthew 10:40-42
Scripture Text: Matthew 10:40 “Whoever receives you is receiving me, and whoever receives me is receiving the One who sent me. 41 Anyone who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive the reward a prophet gets, and anyone who receives a tzaddik because he is a tzaddik will receive the reward a tzaddik gets. 42 Indeed, if someone gives just a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my talmid — yes! — I tell you, he will certainly not lose his reward!”
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary: Matthew 10:40-42
Verse 40 [40] He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. Matthew 18:5; Luke 10:16; John 13:20. Verse 41 [41] He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward. He that entertaineth a prophet — That is, a preacher of the Gospel: In the name of a prophet - That is, because he is such, shall share in his reward. Verse 42 [42] And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. One of these little ones — The very least Christian. Mark 9:41.

Special Music: “Migratory V” and "Give Me Jesus," Pauline Tamale
“Migratory V”
We sail above the weather We search the ocean floor. We rival our creation, Still yearning for more. But can we fly together- A migratory V? How wonderful if that's what God could see. A single voice in whispered prayer Can only pray to travel there. But all as one, We sound the everlasting sound And sing our salvation. Aloft and in formation, A migratory V. How wonderful if that's what God could see.

Last week's worship service featured during the Time With Children, our Children and Family Ministry Director Risa Vargas leading the children and there were nearly thirty of them sitting on the steps of the altar area and paying close attention to what she said. She involved several children of various ages in her talk and while I watched this I noticed she was bare footed. None of the children were bare footed as I imagine they would have preferred to be. Perhaps this lack of foot wear kept their attention from wandering, but they answered her questions with knowledge and enthusiasm. Also seated on the floor, and closely attentive was Pastor Molly Vetter, and I noticed her son Jonah was carefully listening to Risa, not looking for his mother as he used to. I know that many of you prefer to sit in the rear of the church, but we see and hear a lot better up front. You can always find room there if you would like to try it. We also prayed and wished well to the Baja California Group as they prepared for their mission trip. Along with them were students leaving for The United Methodist summer camp where they will meet others from our district churches while enjoying the mountains for a week or so. The third group was the Art Group who will be displaying their work this Sunday or maybe other days for your inspection. Summer activities are beginning and will continue throughout July and August and I have noticed other South Bay Churches urging sign ups for their programs as well. Think of the thousands of children and young people whose lives will be changed by this unique experience. As a youngster growing up in South Los Angeles my family had a summer cabin at Huntington Lake in the High Sierras so as a child I never went to VBS. However, while I was in High School I attended youth camps in at Radford and other Methodist Camps. It was great and eventually I married a fellow camper from our church, Ada Belle Smith. Each year at camp time I remember our wonderful church leaders who taught me (us) more about church teachings than I learned at my own church. Such memories stay with us forever.

Annual Conference 2017 Reflections
|
by George Mercer
Our Church had diverse representation at Annual Conference 2017; Pastor Molly, Stephen Hale, Jonathan and Ofa Tuuholoaki, and me. Bishop Grant Hagiya opened the Conference on Wednesday and led us throughout the 4 days. The theme of the Conference was "From Here to There" and the Bishop asked each of us to go there, going out and making disciples as we grow our church—our marching orders. He set concrete goals: that each church would...

A practicing Catholic, he was asked to lead worship for crowds of thousands at the Rally for Youth and Seminarians in Yonkers, New York during the visit by Pope Benedict XVI in 2008, and in 2013 he sang Lord, I Need You for an audience of about 4 million, including Pope Francis, for World Youth Day in Rio de Janerio. His song Your Grace Is Enough was released on his independent album Welcome To Life on January 1, 2003, and then re-released on his first major studio album Empty & Beautiful, where it peaked at #4 on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart. Moses Hogan was another national treasure in the world of music. He was born in New Orleans, one of a family of 4 sisters and a brother. He was educated musically early in life, first enrolling in Xavier University Junior School of Music. In his sophomore year of high school, he was accepted to New Orleans Center for Creative Arts High School and was in its first graduating class of 1975. He was then was granted a full scholarship at Oberlin Conservatory of Music (studying piano), graduating in 1979, then moving on to study at Julliard and in Vienna. His music, especially his arrangements of classic spirituals, are innovative and adventurous, and often require rather substantial forces. He founded the Moses Hogan Chorale and the Moses Hogan Singers, was appointed Artist-In-Residence at Loyola University New Orleans in 1993, and introduced the "professional" spiritual and helped to revitalize the Negro spiritual tradition. He has over 70 works in publication, including today's offertory, the soulful Give Me Jesus. He was sadly taken from us in 2003 at the age of 45 by a brain tumor. Let There Be Peace On Earth is a song written by Jill Jackson Miller and Sy Miller in 1955. It was initially written for and sung by the International Children's Choir created by Easter Beakly and Arthur Granger of the Granger Dance Academy in Long Beach. To this day, the International Children's Choir uses it as their theme song. Jill Jackson, who had been suicidal after the failure of a marriage, later said that she wrote the song after discovering what she called the "life-saving joy of God's peace and unconditional love." It is featured in numerous Christian hymnals, including ours, and was covered by country star Vince Gill, who recorded it as a duet with his daughter Jenny. It is also the theme song/closing song for the Religious Science movement, which was founded here in Los Angeles. It was performed by the Young People's Chorus of New York City on September 25, 2015 at Ground Zero at the close of the Interfaith Prayer Service and Remembrance, presided over by Pope Francis. Next week, our guest artist will be Felice Hernandez, who will be bringing her talents to bear on FUMC Redondo Beach. Felice is a recording artist who has been featured in numerous films, TV shows, recording spots and as a backup singer for several famous artists. She is also a songwriter and teacher, and lives in the South Bay area.
