This Week In Caregiving
June 24 - June 30, 2017
The New York Times | June 24, 2017
"Medicaid pays for most of the 1.4 million people in nursing homes, like Ms. Jacobs. It covers 20 percent of all Americans and 40 percent of poor adults. On Thursday, Senate Republicans joined their House colleagues in proposing steep cuts to Medicaid, part of the effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act."
Next Avenue, Richard Eisenburg | June 27, 2017
"The daily chatter is missing two big, important questions: What kind of health care and caregiving do the oldest Americans - largely the parents of boomers and Gen X'ers - need? And what will it take for the nation to get there?"
"A new survey of 700 non-professional family caregivers finds that just 30 percent say technology plays a major role in their caregiving. Forty-two percent say technology plays a minor role, and 28 percent says it plays no role at all."
"Microsoft employees with ailing members of their immediate family will be able to take up to four weeks of paid time off to help care for them, the latest addition to the Redmond company's relatively generous leave policies."
"In the midst of Congress' highly divisive and bitterly partisan debate over the future of Medicaid and a possible rollback of the Affordable Care Act, there are oases of thoughtful, bipartisan legislative progress. These proposals focus on a quietly powerful constituency: family caregivers."
"From 2007 until 2016, UC Berkeley researchers tracked the mortality of 176 patients with neurodegenerative diseases that are corrosive to brain function. They also measured the mental health of the family members who took care of them."
"Every day we talk with family caregivers from across the country and hear their stories of love, struggle, and heartbreak. Many families count on Medicaid for services and they know that their loved one will need home and community based services or a nursing home in the future. Life savings, retirement plans, and caregiver assets are all going to pay for care now - but what will be available in the future for all of us who care for others or worry about care for ourselves?"
