Deaf Devo - The Deaf Missions in Council Bluffs, Iowa, United States for Wednesday, 26 July 2017 "Bible Buildings (5)" Bible Reading: Matthew 6:5-8
Matthew 6:5 “When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites, who love to pray standing in the synagogues and on street corners, so that people can see them. Yes! I tell you, they have their reward already! 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. Your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 “And when you pray, don’t babble on and on like the pagans, who think God will hear them better if they talk a lot. 8 Don’t be like them, because your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
-------
Yesterday we talked about the Temple in Jerusalem. The Temple was the most important place of worship for the Jews. But many towns had synagogues as well. Synagogues were places where the Jews gathered to worship, pray and fellowship.
Jesus talked about synagogues in our Bible verses for today. Jesus taught His disciples about prayer. In verse 5a Jesus said, "When you pray, don't be like the hypocrites. They love to stand in the synagogues and on the street corners and pray loudly. They want people to see them." Jesus was talking about people who pray fancy prayers so they can impress other people.
Then Jesus told His disciples how they should pray. "But when you pray, you should go into your room and close the door. Then pray to your Father" (verse 6a). Jesus wants us to be humble and sincere when we pray to God, not proud and boastful.
Be humble and respectful when you pray to God today.
"Don't worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks for what you have." [Philippians 4:6]
PRAYER: Father, You are so wonderful! Thank You for paying attention to my prayers. In Jesus' name. Amen.
