A recent statistic startled me: 87 percent of Americans have a Bible in their homes. Only 30 percent have picked it up and read more than a few verses.
That's like having a sumptuous meal prepared for us, and choosing to have a piece of toast instead.
I'm not sure why people have a Bible but do not read it. Perhaps it is fear of what is inside? Perhaps it is laziness?
Or perhaps some feel intimidated? Perhaps some people think they already know everything in it?
Here's my hope: We see the Bible as an inviting engaging book, a pathway to a more meaningful life.
There's a wonderful Jewish tradition of placing a dab of honey on the page of a Bible on the first day a young child begins to study it. Why?
Because God's word is meant to be sweet. It is something we savor. And the more we savor it, the sweeter it tastes. I hope and pray it remains sweet for you.
