Nazarene youth provide clean water for Sri Lanka village
In eastern Sri Lanka, the lives of approximately 1,700 people have changed thanks to youth from around the world. Through the support of the Justice Movement, a water, sanitation, and hygiene program (WASH) is benefitting 300 families.
The project was led by Nazarene Compassionate Ministries of Lanka (NCM Lanka). After months of education and relationship building, WASH program staff asked the local community for help in minimizing improper sanitation and hygiene practices in the village. Four young women volunteered to join the efforts. An invitation was also given to Nazarene youth in the area to join, four of whom volunteered. With a team of eight volunteers and a group leader, NCM Lanka began its ministry earlier this year. It was the culmination of conversations, willingness to learn, and the determination of many leaders working together.
The work area has broadened to include the addition of five tube wells and the restoration of wells that have needed repair for some time. Previously, people were walking two-to-three kilometers to get water that was not always safe to drink. Now, the five water points that have already been installed in the community are located so villagers can each access safe water within 500 meters of their homes.
The Justice Movement is a collaboration of Nazarene Youth International and Nazarene Compassionate Ministries that was founded in 2015. Its first global campaign, Just Water, focuses on education and advocacy around the global water crisis.

Michigan District elects superintendent

General Superintendent Gustavo A. Crocker announced the election of Kevin T. Hardy as superintendent of the Michigan District.
Elected 17 July on the first ballot, Hardy replaces interim superintendent Glen Gardner, the district superintendent for Eastern Michigan who accepted the temporary, additional assignment during John Seaman's medical leave. A beloved leader, Seaman passed away in March.
Hardy currently pastors the Crossroads Church of the Nazarene in Ellicott City, Maryland. He will begin his new assignment 17 August.
Prior to serving at Crossroads for nearly 17 years, Hardy pastored the Concord, New Hampshire, Church of the Nazarene for seven years. Additional pastoral assignments included Roanoke (East Gate), Virginia; Nashua, New Hampshire, and Williston, Vermont. He began ministry as a youth pastor for six years and has been in pastoral ministry for a total of 29 years.
Hardy is described as “an outstanding pastor with evangelistic skills.” The Michigan District stated he “has a magnetic personality and is passionate about drawing people to Christ” in a communication released by the district.
The district shared the following when announcing the election results:
Kevin’s life story is a remarkable testimony. Here it is in his own words:
“I was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. I grew up in the inner city with my five brothers and sister. We were a Catholic family in name only. My father passed away when I was 11 years old. My mother wanted to get out of the city and moved the family to Cape Cod. I was angry and ran away from home. The State of Massachusetts placed me in a foster home. I lived in the foster home from 12-17 years old. During this time, a local Nazarene church reached out to my family through VBS. My mom, brothers, and sisters all received Christ and attended church regularly. My mother started to pray for me and shared with the church to pray for me.
“When I was 16, Mom invited me to church on Easter Sunday. I went reluctantly, but that day my life was changed. At the end of the service, I went to an altar and asked Jesus Christ into my life. The Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene became my family and helped me grow in my faith. God called me to be a pastor when I was 17 years old.”
Hardy graduated from Eastern Nazarene College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in religion in 1988. In 2008, he earned a Master’s in Pastoral Leadership from Northwest Nazarene University. While preparing for ministry at ENC, Kevin met his wife, Jane. They have been married for 28 years. He describes her as his “partner in life and ministry.”
They have three young adult children: Weston, Patrick, and Kristin.
Under Kevin’s leadership, Crossroads Church of the Nazarene grew from 305 to 773 members, reports the Michigan District. Crossroads has sponsored 14 new churches and has a vision to plant five new churches by 2020. Two have already been started: one on the island of Curaçao, and one started this past Easter in a nearby community.
After the Michigan District Advisory Committee (DAC) interviewed Kevin, it believed him to be a “visionary and an inspiring leader,” states the district. Kevin describes his style of leadership as "relational." Through prayer and reflection, according to the district, he agreed to have his name recommended by the DAC for the district superintendent of Michigan.
The delegation of the 104th District Assembly on the Michigan District voted to accept the name the DAC recommended. Kevin’s name was presented, along with a biography. He was elected by the delegation on the first ballot. He accepted the call to be district superintendent.

Delegates and leaders at the Michigan District Assembly pray over Kevin and Jane Hardy as Glen Gardner prays from the pulpit.

“My heart is heavy as I walk into new territory – but I am certain of God's leading,” Kevin wrote. “My Crossroads family – I love you! Michigan – I am looking forward to meeting you and serving you.”

NBC moves administrative offices to Global Ministry Center
Nazarene Bible College is in the midst of a historic transition. The college’s Board of Trustees recently laid out a plan to move the school forward and ensure its sustainability by transitioning from a centralized campus to an online model of adult ministerial education.
NBC’s administrative offices have now been relocated to the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center in Lenexa, Kansas.
“Our commitment to our students and our mission has never faltered,” said Harold B. Graves Jr., NBC president. “We continue to assist, advocate, and administer our students’ educational goals as they prepare to fulfill God’s calling in their lives.”
Through a relationship with Colorado Springs First Church of the Nazarene, NBC will continue to have classroom and office space to allow current campus students to complete their education. NBC’s technology center remains in Colorado Springs, Colorado, as does the Information Technology department. The college has collaborated with MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kansas, to provide library services for NBC students.
“It is our mission that compels us,” Graves said. “We do not exist for a place; we are driven by a purpose. Anywhere a student can find an Internet connection, our mission takes place.
“As we walk alongside our students during their journey, we are reminded of our mission, and it is our mission that compels us as we move into a bright future.” [Nazarene Bible College]

New NTS grants to fund ministerial entrepreneurship, distance learning programs
Nazarene Theological Seminary received grants from the Association of Theological Schools for faculty development and innovative programming.
$50,000 Innovation Grant will support the development of a new NTS initiative, Entrepreneurship and Ministry in the 21st Century. In collaboration with the Kauffman Foundation, NTS will develop curriculum and training opportunities for local pastors and church districts.
pastors and ministry leaders must be creative, adaptive, and forward-thinking in their ministry contexts,” said Josh Sweeden, dean of the faculty. “The ministerial entrepreneurship curriculum combines critical theological reflection with increasingly important skills in entrepreneurship and innovation.”
$15,000 Faculty Development Grant will support NTS faculty in the implementation of new hybrid learning approaches for distance education students.
The grant coincides with NTS' revised residency format for distance Master of Divinity students, which creates robust, face-to-face learning through four one-week encounters in Kansas City, Missouri, each October. The learning format emphasizes deeper interaction between faculty and students, increased resources for ongoing personal and spiritual formation, and reduced travel, food, and lodging costs for most distance students.

Flags of the Nations: Argentina
The blue stripes upon a white field were placed on the flag by Manuel Belgrano, the leader of the revolution, and are said to be symbolic of the sky above. The golden sun, with the Sun of May face was added to the flag in 1818.

Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Argentina
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Argentina in 1909.
Argentina had a population of 43,886,748 in 2016. That same year, Argentina reported 244 Churches of the Nazarene, 239 of which had been officially organized. Argentina has 16,960 total members.
Located on the South America Region, Argentina has two Phase 3 districts, five Phase 2 districts, and five Phase 1 districts. For more information about the South America Region, visit samnaz.org.
* = The weekly highlighted flag is raised on the middle of three poles in compliance with U.S. government protocols. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. The Christian flag flies on the third pole.
The Global Ministry Center is the mission and service hub of the Church of the Nazarene.

Dallas District changes name to North/East Texas
At the recent Dallas District Assembly, delegates voted to change the district name to North/East Texas District. The assembly vote follows a year of deliberation, discussion, and prayer by district leaders. The final approval for the name change was issued this week by the Church of the Nazarene's Board of General Superintendents and is effective immediately.
“North/East Texas is felt to be a stronger and more effective title for today and for the future,” District Superintendent Keven Wentworth said while presenting the name change proposal. “Our district is a large section of both North and East Texas, representing a wide diversity of cultures, ministries, economies, and communities.”
The proposal, submitted by the District Advisory Board, noted that “In today’s world, 'North/East Texas' is a more effective descriptive title for the district — and it connects more closely in the public mind and understanding of where Nazarenes are located in our unique geographic area. The new name is also meant to help us connect as a district family — to provide a unity of name that better relates who we are and where we are proclaiming the life-changing message of Jesus Christ: to all corners of North and East Texas.”
Organized in 1908, the Dallas District was one of the first in the Church of the Nazarene.
Wentworth paid homage to three generations of Texas Nazarenes.
“We should continue to remember and cherish the hard work, strong faith, and deep roots laid down by Nazarenes in this area since the early 1900s under the banner of 'the Dallas District.'” Wentworth said. "We seek to continue and expand that work in our neighborhoods and communities with a new district name, a new unity of purposes, and a new dedication to work together as 'the people called Nazarenes.'” [North/East Texas District]
