In Memoriam: Joy Gayle Slothower for Tuesday, 4 September 2018 from The First United Methodist Church in Redondo Beach, California, United States
April 24th, 1925 - July 25th, 2018
"O Lord, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. Look down upon our sorrowing hearts today, we humbly pray, and be gracious. Help all who mourn to cast every care upon you, and find comfort, through Jesus Christ our Lord."
With deep sympathy, we share news of the passing of Joy Slothower. Joy passed from this life on Wednesday, July 25 at age 93, in her Redondo Beach home.
Joy was born in Texas, to Roscoe and Leatha Braswell in April of 1925. Roscoe and Leatha were married for three years before Roscoe was tragically killed in an oil derrick accident. Leatha decided to move to California with young daughter, Joy. Joy graduated from UCLA, and was a Bruin for life. She married Robert Slothower on August 23, 1952 in the Wayfarers Chapel in Palos Verdes.
Joy worked for LAUSD as a 9th grade science teacher for many years while raising three children in the San Fernando Valley. Joy loved to travel, and there were few places around the world she had not visited. Joy and Bob were married 49 years, and when he passed she moved full time to Redondo Beach.
Joy enjoyed spending time with her friends in PEO, bridge, and church. She was always very active, and loved golf, riding bikes and walks up and down the beach. Joy is survived by her children, Dale Slothower (Sheryl), Mark Slothower (Tina), and Teri Reilly (Jim). Joy also leaves behind five grandchildren: Jennifer, Ashley, Sean, Whitney, and Paige. Joy also had one great grandchild, Aubrey.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 22nd at the First United Methodist Church, 243 S. Broadway, in Redondo Beach, with Rev. Molly Vetter officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family invites memorial donations to theMDS Foundation or to Cottey College (1000 West Austin; Nevada, MO 64772. Memo: In memory of Joy Slothower, PEO Chapter E, CA).
May God grant us grace, that in pain we may find comfort, in sorrow hope, in death resurrection. (from the United Methodist Book of Worship)
