Daily Scriptures from Reverend Dan Johnson ~ Thursday, 24 October 2013 ~ “The Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy”
Exodus 20:11 reads:
11 Because the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything that is in them in six days, but rested on the seventh day. That is why the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
I’ve received several responses to the DSE this week and three of them each asked me the same question. “Have you readSabbath by Wayne Muller?” Sadly, I have not. But I must be meant to read this book because my dear friend Jim Cook brought me his personal copy yesterday afternoon…and I hadn’t asked to borrow it!
I began reading Muller’s book today and came across something that resonated with my thinking about why God blessed the Sabbath and made it holy. He writes, “Sabbath is time for sacred rest; it may be a holy day, the seventh day of the week, as in the Jewish tradition, or the first day of the week, as for Christians. But Sabbath time may also be a Sabbath afternoon, a Sabbath hour, a Sabbath walk – indeed, anything that preserves a visceral experience of life giving nourishment and rest.”
What Muller says here is so true and has become my own experience with Sabbath time. As a pastor and father of three young children, I don’t have an entire day to dedicate to Sabbath. But I can be very intentional about “finding rest in the middle of things” – I’ll say more about this on Sunday. Until then, I pray you find moments of life giving nourishment and rest to enjoy God for who God is and for the many blessings God has given you.

PS – I am excited to have heard from a few of you yesterday about the trip to Israel and I am looking forward to hearing from more. We will be traveling to the Holy Land with our Bishop from May 12-21, 2014. Registration deadlines are quickly approaching so if you are interested in going, let me know!
Grace and peace be with you,
