Heart of Christianity for Sunday, 27 October 2013 ~ To the Heart of Christianity class Hi to All:

Heart of Christianity for Sunday, 27 October 2013 ~ To the Heart of Christianity class Hi to All:
We'll discuss and see the related video of Chap. 1 (pp. 7-14) of our
text.  We'll discuss some of the issues in the text before viewing the
video.  Here are some issues and questions for the discussion.
1. P. 7.  Read the second epigraph by James Gardner.  How does this
quote affect your thinking?
2. Pp. 7-9.  I sum up the text of these three pages in terms of three
dichotomies:
                     evolution     vs     creationism
                     dynamic       vs     static
                     progressive  vs    conservative
Can you comment on this paradigm (the 3 dichotomies taken together)
in terms of the themes of our reading: science, religion and evolving faith?
3. P. 9.  Can anyone shed light on the multiple intelligences posited by
Howard Gardner?  And how is the notion of multiple intelligences related
to the themes of our text?
4. P. 9.  What does the text say about worldviews.  In your opinion, is
a worldview an asset or a liability for your adherence to the teachings
of Jesus?  Comment.
5. We'll view the video at this point and pause it periodically to
discuss some of the questions in our text, to wit:
     From segment 1: the 1st, 3rd and 5th discussion points (p. 10)
     From segment 2: the 3rd and 4th discussion points (p. 11)
     After segment 3: the 2nd additional question (p. 12)
6. Finally, if you are so inclined, will you comment on Michael
Morwood's poem, "Healing" ?
I realize that this is a discussion format that is unusual in comparison
to what we have done so far.  Try to read carefully the text on pp. 7-10
and then respond the questions 1-4.  Then, when we see the video, maybe
question 5 will make sense.  Finally, do read Morwood's poem more than
once, please.  What does this poem mean to you?
I look forward to a deep and inspiring discussion.  Hasta luego, Ben
