Reflecting God ~ Embrace Holy Living ~ Monday, 21 October 2013 ~ ”Careful and Prayerful Obedience”
Deuteronomy 5:22 the LORD spoke these words to all your assembly on the mountain out of the middle of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice. He added no more. He wrote them on two stone tablets, and gave them to me. 23 When you heard the voice out of the middle of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you came near to me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders; 24 and you said, “Behold, the LORD our God has shown us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the middle of the fire. We have seen today that God does speak with man, and he lives. 25 Now therefore why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. If we hear the LORD our God’s voice any more, then we shall die. 26 For who is there of all flesh, that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the middle of the fire, as we have, and lived? 27 Go near, and hear all that the LORD our God shall say, and tell us all that the LORD our God tells you; and we will hear it, and do it.”
28 The LORD heard the voice of your words, when you spoke to me; and the LORD said to me, “I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken to you. They have well said all that they have spoken. 29 Oh that there were such a heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children forever!
30 “Go tell them, ‘Return to your tents.’ 31 But as for you, stand here by me, and I will tell you all the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which you shall teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it.”
32 You shall observe to do therefore as the LORD your God has commanded you. You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. 33 You shall walk in all the way which the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess.(Messianic WEB)
“Careful and Prayerful Obedience” by Kerry Willis
Cana of Galilee is a cherished stop whenever I lead a discipleship journey to the Holy Land. Nestled between Nazareth and the Sea of Galilee, Cana is the place Jesus was launched into the miracles portion of His public ministry. Launched? Yes, His mother, Mary, called Jesus into the kitchen when the wedding wine unexpectedly ran out. Taking a look at the kitchen help, Mary said, “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5b). They did. Their careful obedience to Jesus’ instructions resulted in an overflow of holy wine that only heaven could afford.
Near the end of His earthly ministry, Jesus was praying in Gethsemane. Overwhelmed by the cup of sorrow His Father offered, Jesus was careful and prayerful to discern exactly what His Father desired. Then He prayed the perfect prayer of obedient surrender. “Father, if are willing, take this cup from me, yet not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42).
At Cana, the Son, observed and obeyed His mother’s words and made holy wine. On Calvary, the Son observed and obeyed His Father’s will and became wine poured out for our salvation. Let us be careful and prayerful to observe God’s Word so we will obediently become God’s will.
Hymn for Today:
”When I Survey The Wondrous Cross” by Isaac Watts
1. When I survey the wondrous cross
on which the Prince of glory died,
my richest gain I count but loss,
and pour contempt on all my pride.
2. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast
save in the death of Christ, my God!
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them through his blood.
3. See, from his head, his hands, his feet,
sorrow and love flow mingled down.
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
or thorns compose so rich a crown?
4. Were the whole realm of nature mine,
that were a present far too small.
Love so amazing, so divine,
demands my soul, my life, my all.
Thought for Today:
“Unlike other leaders, Jesus tells us, ‘Do as I do and as I say”.
