What Are the Biggest Challenges?
A great young church planter and I recently had lunch together. We discussed the success his church was experiencing and the struggles that most churches were facing. He asked what were the biggest challenges churches had to address to avoid decline. There are many answers and you are invited to share yours with us. Here are my top two which I think are fundamental. Internal versus external focus. Growing churches are primarily focused on reaching outside of themselves – local and international missions, intentional invitation, servant evangelism, making a positive difference in the community, investing in advertising, delivering great hospitality, etc. God so loved the world that He sent Jesus and those who follow Jesus need to love the world around them in practical ways.
Living in the past or embracing the future. It is fine to honor the history of the congregation. Refusing to change and valuing the memories of the past more than making new memories of people encountering Jesus, however, will lead to the eventual decline of the congregation. There should be more concern expressed in a congregation if there are few young people than if there is a suggestion to remodel the sanctuary or relocate to a new facility.
“I Just Need to Talk to Someone”
Have you ever felt that way? You know something is wrong and talking with the right person might help. Well here is your opportunity. If you are a pastor or judicatory leader, you are invited to send me an email with a summary of your situation and key questions and we can schedule a time to talk. If you are a member of a church, get with your pastor and let him or her know about this offer. Tell them you are committed to helping the church be even better and have them send me an email. This is a limited time offer so act quickly. don@dnacoaching.com. -------
