Kansas City, Missouri, United States - The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Downtown Weekly eNote from Pastor Scott Chrostek for Friday, 25 July 2014
Good Friday Morning RezDowntowners!
I hope this email finds you doing well and that you are looking forward to another great summer weekend in Kansas City!  This weekend in worship we’ll be continuing our sermon series, Are You Listening? This week, I’ll be focusing on a question I’ve been wrestling with for a bit.  We’ll be asking the questions, “Does God still speak?  And if so, then what is He saying and how do you hear Him?”
As I was driving home last Sunday night after worship, I managed to drive past the Crossroads Concert Venue only to be greeted by hundreds of concert goers who were confronting and being confronted by the Westboro Baptist protestors.  Their signs offered several words to the surrounding crowds coming and going, but these were more than just words.  These were words they ascribed to God.  All I could do was shake my head as I thought about the timing of it all.  I couldn't help but wonder if anybody was listening to each other, to the music, to God, or to anything at all.  As I drove away from this pretty tense scene I started reflecting upon the story of Samuel a little further and I found myself longing for a word from God similar to the ones that Samuel received.  Does God ever speak to you?  This weekend, we’ll be talking about God’s call, God's voice, the times when he speaks and the times when it seems as though God is silent.  My hope is that we'll unpack practical tips for what we can do in all of the moments in between as well.  I hope you’ll invite friends and coworkers to join you as together we continue this study on Samuel together by wrestling with the question of God ‘s calling.
In the meantime, here are some ways to connect to the life of this church:

SWAT (Singles with a Twist) is having their next Lunch’n Learn. Join other singles (approx. 35 and up) as they discuss the Five Love Languages. On Sunday, July 27 at 12:30pm in the loft at 1522 McGee, you will learn about the Five Love Languages, take the official profile to determine what your personal love languages are, and discuss how we can use this insight to make all of our relationships better. Keeping with the theme of love, let's test our creativity and bring food with a twist of red or pink (if possible). For more information contact either Gina Bowman, ginab@kc.rr.com; Renae Gonner, rgonner@ermarketing.net; or Philip Krause, pnkrause@pnkrause.com.
Ready to Shop for School Supplies?  Yes, it’s that time of year again! Resurrection Downtown has made a difference in the heart of the city by supplying many of our mission partners with school supplies. This year we will be assisting Wendell Phillips Elementary, Crossroads Academy, Rose Brooks, ReStart, Healing House and more. Would you be willing to grab a bag along with the school supply list and bless a child this school year? The bags need to be returned by next Sunday, Aug. 3. You’ll make a big difference in the lives of the littlest ones!
Won’t You Please? Please! Won’t You Be My Neighbor?  No matter where you are in the city, there’s someone who attends Resurrection who probably lives near you. Join us Wednesday, August 6, at 7 pm at 1522 McGee for some neighborhood networking based on zip codes. We are hoping to help folks connect with others who live in their area. Please wear your favorite cardigan sweater if you’d like to stay with the Mister Rogers theme. If you don’t know what that means, it means “don’t worry about it” – you’re just younger than the people who created the title for this event! We will be offering childcare, so bring your kids (infants – 5th grade). Please register to attend at rezdowntown.org/neighbor. For questions, contact Kelly.Sisney@cor.org.
Mission Service Trip in Omaha – Rez Downtown is piloting a mission service trip to Omaha, Neb., Sept. 18-21. The trip is for those who are interested in issues of poverty and social justice and want experience in serving with and for the poor. The team will be touring and serving in local organizations that address poverty, working in a community garden, eating in a community cafĂ©, worshipping in a multicultural setting and much more. The total cost for the trip is $200, and the application deadline is July 31. The trip is limited to 10 people, so please sign up soon. Applications can be picked up at Connection Point, or email Todd.Maberry@cor.org.
Save the Date! rezlife for Middle Schoolers (Grades 5-8) – is starting Sunday, Aug. 17, at the 10:45 am service. The first Sunday will be an informational meeting for you and your parents. We will have goodies to eat! For questions, contact Kris.Drummond@cor.org.
KiDSCOR Leader for Large Group Needed! Would you be willing, once a month, to help lead the littlest ones in our community as they gather for singing and storytelling? Mister Justin will be singing and the class curriculum provides you with all the information. This would involve leading at the 9 am and/or 10:45 am worship service, 20 minutes each session. The only volunteer job requirement for this position is to love kids and be able to talk loud! If you are interested or have questions, please contact Kris.Drummond@cor.org.
The Gospels – Mondays starting Aug. 11, at 7 am at 1522 McGee in the Loft. In this six-week class, we’ll take an in-depth look at the Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. In this one-hour class you will connect the Old Testament to the New Testament through prophesies found in the Bible. Visit rezdowntown.org/thegospels for more information and to register. For questions, contact Brad Hanna at bradjhanna@gmail.com or 816-679-3494.
I am so blessed to be a part of this community and I am so proud to serve Christ with you in this city.  I am so thankful to be a part of such a dynamic and life-giving community of people like you.  I'm looking forward to seeing you in worship this weekend, but until then, have a great and God-filled weekend!
Grace and Peace,
Scott
