What are the Distinguished Service Award and the Memorial Roll?
The Distinguished Service Award recognizes someone (living) who has served or is serving the church. It may be presented by the church or a group within the church (not individuals). The Memorial Roll is a record of people who have been memorialized by gifts to the Medical Plan. It is kept in the General NMI Office and is a significant way to honor the deceased (members of the local church or not) and may be presented by groups or individuals. Both of these honors are accompanied by attractive certificates stating the recipient and-in the case of a DSA-the reason for presentation.

SURPRISING LEADERSHIP LESSONS FROM A PUPPY
Five Unforgettable
Ways to Relate to Others
Have you ever noticed that a puppy can relate to just about anyone? Puppies may be awkward and impulsive, but put a puppy in a crowd of even the most sophisticated people and their inner child will emerge faster than you can say woof!
Every leader could learn a thing or two about relating to people from those adorable creatures. Here are five unforgettable ways that puppies put people at ease-and you can too.
1. Puppies are glad to see you.
Relational leadership begins with celebrating people as they are, where they are. When people know that you are more concerned with their presence than their performance, they will follow you anywhere.
2. Puppies don't have hidden agendas.
With a puppy, what you see is what you get. The wag of the tail, the sloppy kiss, the jumping up to greet you-that's all genuine. If you want to truly relate to others, forget what they can do for you and think about what you can do for them.
3. Puppies aren't impressed with your credentials.
Puppies don't know whether you're a champ or a chump - only whether you're safe to be around. Relational leaders don't play favorites. They treat everyone the same, and always make a safe space for newcomers
4. Puppies are loyal.
Puppies don't practice conditional loyalty; they love you no matter what. If you want to relate to people, they must know that you are unconditionally loyal-that you'll be the first in and the last out in times of adversity.
5. Puppies are enthusiastic.
Everything a puppy does is done with plenty of pep and a little bounce. That's one of the things that draws people to them. Enthusiasm is a great motivator! Be enthusiastic about what you're doing, and see how quickly people catch the spirit.
Sure, puppies can be a little headstrong and hard to reign in, but so can a good leader at times. Approach people with the same eager, open attitude that a puppy displays, and your team will thrive.
What about you? What leadership lessons could you add from the canine kingdom?[Stan Toler]

Fast and Flexible - Update from Nepal.
"Our biggest advantage to being a small organization as Nazarene Compassionate Ministries: We are very fast and very flexible," said Jörg Eich, Eurasia Region NCM coordinator, during a debriefing.
This was just one day after the NCM Nepal team members carried more than 300 bags of rice to the village of Tindhara where every single one of 223 households had lost their homes, and many had lost their means of self-support.
Providing disaster relief in a situation such as this requires creative approaches and continual reassessment and flexibility. But God is faithful and lives are being touched!

GOD MOVES IN AMAZING WAYS – REACHING OUT TO THE ABORIGINAL COMMUNITIES IN AUSTRALIA
Australia, ANZ Field: Less than two months ago, we received a prayer request from Rev. Kim Jong-Il, a missionary working with central desert Aboriginal Communities in Australia. He was scheduled to hold a five-day Easter Conference in Blackstone, where he planned to show the JESUS Film, conduct bible studies and distribute Papyrus Audio Book Players to the community.EASTER CONFERENCE TO BE HELD IN ABORIGINAL COMMUNITY IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA- PRAYER REQUESTED!
Rev. Jong-Il happily shared with us updates on his Australia aboriginal mission:
We continue to share God’s Word and pray for the Aboriginal communities. The Kununurra Bethel Community is making an impact. One of their projects is looking after single mothers. There is also a Children’s Church every Thursday, where around 60 kids participate through Bible study and games.
Rev. Kim Jong-Il and his “future pastor”.
Members from our Korea Nazarene Church family recently visited our Aboriginal Christian College and had a great time building friendships.
In Broome, Brother Stewart and his wife Anna continue their leadership training in anticipation of the Kennedy Hill Aboriginal Community Church planting to take place in the near future.
We praise God for your prayers and partnership as many obstacles have been overcome. Through the work of the Holy Spirit and your commitment to pray, a revival was sparked during our recent Blackstone Easter Convention and 30 Aboriginal children and 6 adults committed their lives to the Lord. The Papyrus Solar Audio Players will be instrumental in ongoing discipleship.

Families living in the desert were engaged through outreach programs. Together with the Aboriginal tribal elders, the Blackstone Community Church was established in a new outdoor structure, where we can hold bible teaching and leadership training.

Indeed, God has been at work in and amongst the Aboriginal communities in Australia. We are so very appreciative of your prayers, partnership, and the commitment of those who continue to minister together, serving as the tangible hands and feet of Christ in these communities.
Prayer Request:
  • Please continue to pray for Rev. Jong-Il and these specific prayer requests that he has listed.
  • Winston Mitchell as he guides the Blackstone Church as a new Pastor and for his family, that they would remain faithful to the Lord.
  • The Aboriginal communities of Looma, Kununurra, Perth, Halls Creek and Blackstone.

Passion for Making Christlike Disciples Continues as More Lives Come to Christ in Myanmar.
Southeast Asia Field
This past March, leaders met in Myanmar to discuss the definition of "Church" and to understand how they could be more effective at making "Christlike Disciples."
One of the laymen who attended, Mr. Thana, came to explore his own hunger and calling to serve the church. Thana was moved to tears as he listened to the discussion and inspiring definition of what it means to be "church."
Not even two months later, Bill Kwon is reporting many new lives coming to Christ through the ministry of Mr. Thana. New church plants are on the horizon and a Course of Study for September. Don't miss this exciting work of the Holy Spirit in this formerly closed

PASSION FOR MAKING CHRISTLIKE DISCIPLES CONTINUES AS MORE LIVES COME TO CHRIST IN MYANMAR.

Myanmar, Southeast Asia Field: This past March, leaders met in Myanmar to discuss the definition of “Church” and to understand how they could be more effective at making “Christlike disciples.”THE HOLY SPIRIT MOVING IN MYANMAR AS LEADERS GRASP HOLD OF THE DEFINITION OF “CHURCH!”
One of the laymen who attended, Mr. Thana, came to explore his own hunger and calling to serve the church. Thana was moved to tears as he listened to the discussion and inspiring definition of what it means to be “church.”
This past week, the following update came from Bill Kwon, Myanmar Country Coordinator:
Bill Kwon and Mr. Thana
God has brought new lives into the Kingdom through the ministry of Mr. Thana! In a location about 25 miles from Tahan, (Myanmar) seven members of two different families have given their hearts to Christ! This weekend we will be welcoming them into the church.
This is exactly what we were praying for when we met in March, that in Myanmar, our leaders would capture the vision of going and making Christlike disciples, impacting their communities. For Mr. Thana and our churches in Myanmar, seeing people give their hearts to Christ is not the end goal but rather just the beginning. We are now working together with the local Tahan Trinity Church of the Nazarene, to develop a plan for ongoing discipleship of these new believers, along with the potential of planting a new church in their community. Twenty disciples have already expressed their desire to be trained and to plant churches in the near future. The district is praying for the commencement of a Course of Study in September for these new disciples, training them up to be lay pastors and good shepherds.
Please join us in praying that these new believers will continue to invite neighbors from their community to experience the peace, hope, and joy that is found through a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.[Submitted: Bill Kwon, Myanmar Country Coordinator.]

RURAL NAZARENE HEALTH MINISTRIES – MUCH MORE THAN MEDICINE – SOULS FOR THE KINGDOM!

Papua New Guinea, Melanesia South Pacific Field: Last week we published a story about how the Lord was opening doors through the ministry of Rural Nazarene Health Ministries.RURAL NAZARENE HEALTH MINISTRIES…SO MUCH MORE THAN MEDICINE…IT’S KINGDOM IMPACT!
This week the story continues as we report on how open doors have turned into lives for the Kingdom!
It was a real blessing, having the Easter week fellowship in Wafibambun village, Makham district of Morobe province. The fellowship started through the work of Nazarene Health Ministries Rural Health Services of PNG in an area where we didn’t even have a health facility! The gathering resulted in a week revival where almost the entire village came to worship together at the Easter fellowship.
The Nazarene College of Nursing was invited to take part at the event and they joined the fellowship on Friday evening and lead in the outreach at the Markham district centre the next morning. There were 19 who gave their hearts to the Lord!
During the morning service on Sunday, the entire hosting family came to dedicate themselves to the Lord. They also gave the land for dedication and our pastors prayed over the land to build the church. The village leader presented us with a young coconut plant to mark a sign of the new church to be planted. We received the coconut, prayed over it and planted it on the land that has now been dedicated to build the church.
The church was given its name as, “ Valley Church of the Nazarene.” Those in attendance shared their vision to reach out to the whole of Markham valley. We praised God because it all started with the work of Rural Health Services through Imane Health Sub Centre.
Prayer points to share:
• Pray for the 19 new believers in the area.
• Pray for Peter Bill & wife Carol, both are conducting night fellowship every Tuesday.
• There is no pastor. Please pray with us as we continue to find a pastor for that church.
• Pray for my family [Gabriel & family] as we will continue to assist them in many ways to bring the dream to fruition. We are now in the process of helping it become an organized church.

"The angel of the Lord came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites."(Judges 6:11, NIV)
I have always been intrigued by Gideon's natural response to the outside threats on his people and his community. These threats had been so intense and damaging that his only resort was to keep what little resources he had left so the invaders would not take them from his family. He was doing the right thing. Preservation and defense were the natural responses he had been conditioned to apply. Going forward, reclaiming the land, and even facing the foes were the last thoughts on his mind, until ...

Preservation and defense were the natural responses he had been conditioned to apply. Going forward, reclaiming the land, and even facing the foes were the last thoughts on his mind, until …
We have seen the church go through the same interaction with the world around us. We are surrounded by an increasingly hostile society that is threatening to take the few results that have come into the harvest, and we carefully design devices to keep them protected from the attacks of today’s Midianites. Most of our programs, gatherings, and even our sermons focus on encouraging the believers to remain in the flock. Yet, we are often reminded by the Holy Spirit that the best plan to preserve the flock is to release it to “go” and extend His kingdom on earth.
I learned that lesson when I was a teenager playing chess at state championships. One year in the finals, I played against the most reputable opponent, and I was no match for him. The game was no contest. Therefore, in preparation for the following year’s tournament, I spent all my time and energies learning defensive strategies. I specialized in defense. I was not about to let the champion embarrass me again. That year, we met each other in the semi-finals. We played a great match and, as I had hoped, he did not defeat me—we tied, but he went on to the finals because of his better record! At the end of the tournament, one of my mentors taught me an important life lesson: “If you play defense only, the best that can happen to you is that you will not be defeated, but you will never win.”
A medal now hangs on the wall of my house because on the third attempt, I learned the value of being proactive rather than reactive. I learned the value of facing the foe rather than retreating. I learned that the only way to advance is to move forward.
The angel of the Lord saw Gideon in the weakness of his cocooning and challenged him to go in his own strength (Judges 6:14). Similarly, our Lord Jesus told the disciples as He returned to the Father to “go and make disciples in all nations …”
Transformational leaders are proactive leaders. They do not hold back. They do not cocoon. They go. John Wesley epitomized this type of leader. He often said, “I want the whole Christ to be my Savior, the whole Bible for my book, the whole Church for my fellowship, and the whole world for my mission field.”
