Effective Turnaround in Three Not-So-Easy Steps
Surrounded by Businesses?
Many churches are surrounded by businesses. Whether downtown or suburb, the number of businesses within 1-2 miles could number in the hundreds or even thousands. Those businesses all have people working in them during the week. That means that thousands of people spend a large portion of their lives just down the street from a church.
Imagine a church embracing its business community and being intentional about connecting with them. Consider what could happen if your church was that church. Here are a few things which you could do.
Visit every business in the area to (1) thank them for being part of the community, (2) offer the services of the church if a need should arise and (3) to leave them cookies
Host “lunch and learn” events where the church brings in a speaker who addresses a business-related issue and the community is invited to bring a lunch and interact with the speaker
Take the lead on a community clean-up event and visit every business to make them aware of the effort and invite them to participate
Adopt a local school and invite the business community to partner with the church to help the school and its students. This effort should not appear to benefit the church directly. Instead the church is serving as the organizer of community effort to help the students who go to school in that particular community. If your church has found ways to effectively connect with the businesses in your community, please share your experiences with us today – don@dnacoaching.com
Effective Turnaround in Three Not-So-Easy Steps
You have to want it spiritually. Deep inside you have to want to see new (and existing) people changed by the grace of God. It must be about more than the survival of the church, the maintenance of a building or the continuation of jobs. This deep desire becomes consistently expressed by the congregation through its actions and loving outreach.
It has to be about more than what you want personally. Turnaround is not defined as getting everyone else to do church the way I want it done. It is putting our wants and history of doing church under the lordship of Jesus. It is saying “he must increase and I must decrease”. It is accepting being a bit uncomfortable in your own church in order to help others be more comfortable.
Leadership must be given consistently. Lay and clergy leaders must not give up at the first sign of resistance or after an early program fails. The turnaround journey is not short or easy. Leaders need to keep their eyes on the goal of reaching more people with the life-changing message of Jesus. Consistently working in one direction over an extended period of time will produce results.
