Dear Resurrection Family
LaVon and I are on vacation this week, but I’ve been watching the news as the Supreme Court issued its ruling regarding same-sex marriage this morning. I am preparing a blog that I’ll post tomorrow on my blog page about this ruling.
This weekend we begin a new four-week sermon series on the parables of Jesus. Jesus typically taught about the kingdom of God and preached the good news by using stories, metaphors and similes. While technically parables are often considered the short stories Jesus told, more broadly they include all the similes Jesus used to describe God’s kingdom, God’s character and God’s will. In some ways, all of Jesus' acts were parables lived out – dynamic events aimed at teaching us who God is and who God calls us to be. Matthew 13:34 notes, “Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable.”
This weekend at Leawood Jeff Kirby will be preaching (Pastor Penny will preach at Blue Springs, Pastor Jason at Resurrection West, and Todd Maberry at Downtown). Jeff is a gifted teacher and preacher, and you’ll be blessed by his message as he introduces the parables and then helps us focus on one particular category of parables. By the time you leave church you’ll have a deeper understanding of what it means to live as a disciple of Jesus Christ. LaVon and I will be worshiping online as we do whenever we are out of town.
Last weekend for Father’s Day, at the 10:45 a.m. service, I forgot to call for the Dayton Moore video clip about the role his dad played in shaping his love of baseball, and the kind of father he seeks to be. I thought I had shown it (this is what happens when you have multiple services!). I wanted to make sure you have a chance to see it. Here’s the link, the clip is just over one minute long. I’d also encourage you to take a look at Dayton Moore’s book, More Than a Season – an excellent read focused on leadership, faith and family. You can order it from our bookstore by clicking here.
I want to thank all of our volunteers and leaders who made possible this year’s Bless the School. I am so proud of each of you and the work you do in serving children and teachers here in Kansas City. God is honored by your witness and the giving of your time. All of you who contribute to Church of the Resurrection had a part in this by the giving of your resources.
I also want to thank all of our volunteers and our staff who worked so hard to make the National Worship Leader Conference happen this last week. I heard that it was an awesome event and it touched, inspired and blessed nearly 2,000 worship leaders from churches across the country, while blessing many of you who came for the concerts in the evenings. My one regret for taking vacation this week was missing the concerts.
I’ve got to run. Please look for my blog on The Bible and the Supreme Court Ruling tomorrow at www.adamhamilton.org.
Blessings!
Adam
