Can you imagine turning on the news to see a presidential candidate say that you don’t deserve a place in the only country you’ve ever known?
As an undocumented immigrant woman living through the 2016 presidential race, this is my reality.
Many presidential hopefuls have chosen to build their campaigns on fear, scapegoating immigrants like me, ignoring our country’s problems with structural racism, attacking women’s reproductive rights, and making heroes out of bigots like LGBTQ-discriminator Kim Davis. Their hateful language and ideas have real-life consequences — activating white supremacist groups and inspiring violence against immigrants, women, and people of color. But as people of faith and moral courage, we know better. Join me to remind 2016 presidential candidates that together — immigrants, women, people of color, LGBTQ folks, allies, you, and me — #WeMakeAmericaGreat.
It is heartbreaking to see how quickly these national candidates have participated in political tactics that exclude so many of us. If some of these candidates’ ideas are implemented, my sister and I will be separated from my mom, dad and little brother. We will be barred from living in the only place we call home, and the career I’ve had the privilege of developing as a DACA recipient will be over. My sister and I would have even less access to affordable healthcare as undocumented women, and if my sister wanted to marry her girlfriend, people like Kim Davis could refuse to give her a marriage license by claiming “religious liberty.”
My family is the human family, my community is the moral movement for justice, and my faith is what makes me wake up every day with a calling to heal the world. But my vision of a just world depends on leaders who recognize the inherent value of all people regardless of citizenship status, race, gender or sexuality. Sign the petition encouraging candidates to dump the divisive language and policy proposals pushed by extremists by acknowledging that together, #WeMakeAmericaGreat.
The next presidential debate is tonight — join our moral call by using the hashtag #WeMakeAmericaGreat, and check out some sample Tweets here.
