Redondo Beach, California, United States  First United Methodist Church eNews: All Saints' Day, Pledge Campaign, Joseph and more! for Thursday, 29 October 2015
This Sunday in worship: All Saints' Day remembrances. Dedicating financial pledges for 2016.
A new sermon series on Joseph's story, and some beautiful Gospel music!
From Pastor Molly: The Witness of the Saints
This weekend, we will dedicate pledges of financial giving for 2016, during our morning worship services. I hope that many of you will be ready to make this commitment; I believe that giving to church is an important part of our faith, and that, whatever its size, making a pledge can be a meaningful way to make that commitment. (Also, it's certainly helpful to our Finance Committee, as we seek to set a budget for next year!)
Whether or not you are ready to make a pledge of commitment, though, I hope you might take up this opportunity to make or renew your sense of connection to the church, and to THIS church. The work of the church really happens as each of us lives out our faith, individually and together. We make "church" possible as we support it with our prayers, presence, giving, service and witness.
On this All Saints' Day weekend, I'll be thinking especially of my farmer grandfather, who passed away this Spring. His former pastor told me of what a simple, practical approach he took when giving to the church: "Tithing is easy," he'd said. "You just move the decimal point over one spot."
I think also of the saints of our congregation--most especially of those we have lost this year. Sunday, we'll remember beloved church members like Norma Nelson, whose kindness, concern for others and generosity was a way of life. I pray that my life would speak as clearly as hers.[
Pastor Molly Vetter]
Don't forget that there is a time change this Saturday night--and we get an extra hour of sleep! See you at 8:30 or 10:30 (well-rested). :)

"Family Stories"

Pastor Molly, preaching
Genesis 37:1 Ya‘akov continued living in the land where his father had lived as a foreigner, the land of Kena‘an.

2 Here is the history of Ya‘akov. When Yosef was seventeen years old he used to pasture the flock with his brothers, even though he was still a boy. Once when he was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives, he brought a bad report about them to their father. 3 Now Isra’el loved Yosef the most of all his children, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a long-sleeved robe. 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they began to hate him and reached the point where they couldn’t even talk with him in a civil manner.
5 Yosef had a dream which he told his brothers, and that made them hate him all the more. 6 He said to them, “Listen while I tell you about this dream of mine. 7 We were tying up bundles of wheat in the field when suddenly my bundle got up by itself and stood upright; then your bundles came, gathered around mine and prostrated themselves before it.” 8 His brothers retorted, “Yes, you will certainly be our king. You’ll do a great job of bossing us around!” And they hated him still more for his dreams and for what he said.
9 He had another dream which he told his brothers: “Here, I had another dream, and there were the sun, the moon and eleven stars prostrating themselves before me.” 10 He told his father too, as well as his brothers, but his father rebuked him: “What is this dream you have had? Do you really expect me, your mother and your brothers to come and prostrate ourselves before you on the ground?” 11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind. & Revelation 21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth,[Revelation 21:1 Isaiah 65:17, 66:22] for the old heaven and the old earth had passed away, and the sea was no longer there. 2 Also I saw the holy city, New Yerushalayim, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 I heard a loud voice from the throne say, “See! God’s Sh’khinah is with mankind, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and he himself, God-with-them, will be their God.[Revelation 21:3 Leviticus 26:11–12; Isaiah 7:14; 8:8, 10; Jeremiah 31:33(34); Ezekiel 37:27; 2 Chronicles 6:18] 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will no longer be any death; and there will no longer be any mourning, crying or pain; because the old order has passed away.”
5 Then the One sitting on the throne said, “Look! I am making everything new!” Also he said, “Write, ‘These words are true and trustworthy!’” 6 And he said to me, “It is done! I am the ‘A’ and the ‘Z,’ the Beginning and the End. To anyone who is thirsty I myself will give water free of charge from the Fountain of Life.
John Wesley's Notes Commentary for Genesis 37:1-11
Verse 2
[2] These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.
These are the generations of Jacob — It is not a barren genealogy, as those of Esau, but a memorable useful history.
Joseph brought to his father their evil report — Jacob's sons did that when they were from under his eye, which they durst not have done if they had been at home with him; but Joseph gave his father an account of their ill carriage, that he might reprove and restrain them.
Verse 3
[3] Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.
He made him a coat of divers colours - Which probably was significant of farther honours intended him.
Verse 5
[5] And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.
Though he was now very young, about seventeen years old, yet he was pious and devout, and this fitted him for God's gracious discoveries to him. Joseph had a great deal of trouble before him, and therefore God gave him betimes this prospect of his advancement, to support and comfort him.
Verse 8
[8] And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.
Shalt thou indeed reign over us? — See here, 1. How truly they interpreted his dream? The event exactly answered this interpretation, Genesis 42:6, etc. 2. How scornfully they resented it, Shalt thou that art but one, reign over us that are many? Thou that art the youngest, over us that are elder? The reign of Jesus Christ, our Joseph, is despised and striven against by an unbelieving world, who cannot endure to think that this man should reign over them. The dominion also of the upright in the morning of the resurrection is thought of with the utmost disdain.
Verse 10
[10] And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?
His father rebuked him — Probably to lessen the offence which his brethren would take at it; yet he took notice of it more than he seemed to do.
Revelation 21:1-6a
Verse 1
[1] And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
And I saw — So it runs, Revelation 19:11; 20:1,4,11, in a succession. All these several representations follow one another in order: so the vision reaches into eternity.
A new heaven and a new earth — After the resurrection and general judgment. St. John is not now describing a flourishing state of the church, but a new and eternal state of all things.
For the first heaven and the first earth — Not only the lowest part of heaven, not only the solar system, but the whole ethereal heaven, with all its host, whether of planets or fixed stars, Isaiah 34:4; Matthew 24:29. All the former things will be done away, that all may become new, verses 4,5; 2 Peter 3:10,12.
Are passed away — But in the fourth verse it is said, "are gone away." There the stronger word is used; for death, mourning, and sorrow go away all together: the former heaven and earth only pass away, giving place to the new heaven and the new earth.
Verse 2
[2] And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
And I saw the holy city — The new heaven, the new earth, and the new Jerusalem, are closely connected. This city is wholly new, belonging not to this world, not to the millennium, but to eternity. This appears from the series of the vision, the magnificence of the description, and the opposition of this city to the second death, Revelation 20:11,12; 21:1; 2,5,8,9; 22:5.
Coming down — In the very act of descending.
Verse 3
[3] And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
They shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God — So shall the covenant between God and his people be executed in the most glorious manner.
Verse 4
[4] And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
And death shall be no more — This is a full proof that this whole description belongs not to time, but eternity.
Neither shall sorrow, or crying, or pain, be any more: for the former things are gone away — Under the former heaven, and upon the former earth, there was death and sorrow, crying and pain; all which occasioned many tears: but now pain and sorrow are fled away, and the saints have everlasting life and joy.
Verse 5
[5] And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
And he that sat upon the throne said — Not to St. John only. From the first mention of "him that sat upon the throne," Revelation 4:2, this is the first speech which is expressly ascribed to him.
And he — The angel.
Saith to me Write — As follows.
These sayings are faithful and true — This includes all that went before. The apostle seems again to have ceased writing, being overcome with ecstasy at the voice of him that spake.
Verse 6
[6] And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
And he — That sat upon the throne.
Said to me, It is done — All that the prophets had spoken; all that was spoken, Revelation 4:1. We read this expression twice in this prophecy: first, Revelation 16:17, at the fulfilling of the wrath of God; and here, at the making all things new.
I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end — The latter explains the former: the Everlasting.
I will give to him that thirsteth — The Lamb saith the same, Revelation 22:17.

Sermon Story "Anticipating through Action" by Gary Lee Parker for Sunday, 1 November 2015 with Scripture: Revelation 21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth,[Revelation 21:1 Isaiah 65:17, 66:22] for the old heaven and the old earth had passed away, and the sea was no longer there. 2 Also I saw the holy city, New Yerushalayim, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 I heard a loud voice from the throne say, “See! 5 Then the One sitting on the throne said, “Look! I am making everything new!” Also he said, “Write, ‘These words are true and trustworthy!’” 6 And he said to me, “It is done! How do you respond to this passage of Scripture? Many times this gives hope to believers in Jesus who see no hope in this life either because of their situations or how they perceive the world has getting more violent and in desapair, et what is God realing telling us here. We know that Jesus is coming back with His home for us, but He ust may be saying that as long as we are living in this world we are to be people of love and hope to all people we come in contact with. Yes, it will be great to have the final consummation of Jesus as the King of all Creation, but what is he asking us to do and be as we live and work in this world. We look at the many of the marginalized people being excluded from our communities, even our communities of faith, such as non-white people, people with different sexual orientation, people who are refugees or immigrants, or people who happen to have a disability or differently abled. We are able to look at many of the communities that have been developed to give hope to the hopeless, yet we look at what has become L'Arche International that was started over fifty years ago when a French-Canadian was obedient to God and an French priest when he began to live with two adult men who happen to be intelectual impaired. Through this experience, Jean Vanier began to realize the gifts that the people who are differently abled have to offer the communities as well as the faith communities. Within this concept of L'Arche we see the people with disabilities live and work alongside people who have no disabilities bringing a community of support for each other. It may be in the living arrangement or in the monthly community meals for the L'Arche connected and the people not connected to L'Arche. The observation of seeing people eating together and interacting with each other. Also the seeing of the people who are differently abled assisting with the food preparations, the set up, and the cleaning up before and after the gathering. We look at this example of how L'Arche has existed for over fifty years for the church or communities of faith to exist in love and peace. Have you ever spent time with a person or people who are differently abled? Have you been controlling of their actions and condescending in listening to them and allowing them to perform their talents? How would you desire the church to live in community similar to L'Arche who be connected to a L'Arche or a community similar to L'Arche that you have connected to your local congregation? What are your preconceived thoughts which have to be transformed into God-like thoughts? How would you support a ministry such as The Proposed Global United Methodist Church-Church of the Nazarene's Lamb's Hope Ministry? We come to seek forgiveness where we have failed to live as God has called us to live with all people and seek God's leading and blessings in our pursuit of a similar community as we take and eat the Body of Jesus and drink His Blood in our participation in the Holy Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. We come to receive from God singing the hymn "Revelation 21:4" by The Poet's Dance
He will dry every tear from their eyes
And death shall be no more
Neither will mourning, nor crying, nor pain
For the former things have passed away
Hymn: "Jerusalem, my happy home, Name ever dear to me" by Author: F. B. P.; Alterer: Joseph Bromehead; Author (attributed to): Augustine of Hippo
1. Jerusalem, my happy home,
when shall I come to thee?
When shall my sorrows have an end?
Thy joys when shall I see?
2. O happy harbor of the saints,
O sweet and pleasant soil!
In thee no sorrow may be found,
no grief, no care, no toil.
3. Thy saints are crowned with glory great;
they see God face to face;
they triumph still, they still rejoice;
most happy is their case.
4. Jerusalem, my happy home,
would God I were in thee!
Would God my woes were at an end,
thy joys that I might see!

Worship program or on our web page. You'll keep abreast of everything at church by reading that carefully.
Recently we lost another long time member of our church with the passing of Norma Nelson. She, Ross Harrington
and Caroline Schwarz and a few others have all been long time members of the adult Sunday  Bible class led by
Helen Stockwell and though they have missed a year or so before passing on, they were stalwart members of that
group and we miss them. They and others attended our church, made their impressions on us and were the kind of
Christians one expects to find in this congregation. Norma's request was not to have a memorial service, but there
is a Memorial Fund in her name for those who wish to donate in lieu of flowers. Just indicate her name and the words
Memorial Fund and it will help remember her dedication to this United Methodist Church for so many years.

came to me last Sunday: Pastor Molly Vetter is the very first female Senior Pastor this church has ever had in over  128

very special interim women Pastors as well. We are all very fortunate to be in this congregation at this time.

Another Adventure Awaits
Hi Friends,
It looks like another adventure is in front of me. We are moving to Seattle! David begins a job with Amazon on November 30th. We are currently searching for a school district suitable for our 16 year old son, Joshua, as well as a home. Joshua and I plan to join David as soon as we find the right place to live. It may be as early as Thanksgiving that we all head north, or as late as the end of Joshua’s first semester at Redondo, which is in mid-January. I will certainly keep you posted as developments occur.

"Another Adventure Awaits" by Johnna Kosnoff
Hi Friends,
It looks like another adventure is in front of me.
Many of you know my family has moved fairly often. In the (almost) 25 years of marriage, David and I have had 11 addresses, covering 5 states (Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin & California) and 2 countries (U.S. and Hong Kong).  Moving away from people we love and hold dear is certainly difficult for us. However, when a job opportunity arises, we try to embrace it as an occasion to explore new areas, meet new people and enhance our lives. Spending time in Seattle, and the general Northwest area, will be new for us so, we are quite excited!
Since we returned from HK, 4.5 years ago, life has been full: getting re-acclimated to schools and life in Redondo, traveling to Indiana when my brother was battling (and lost) cancer, starting seminary and withdrawing only a month later, becoming your Lay Leader and planning for Kyle’s college adventure and now a move. Through all of the ups and downs, you, my brothers and sisters in Christ, have been a constant source of support: encouraging me as a mom, loving me as a friend and accepting me as your Lay Leader. I am so grateful to have been blessed in such beautiful ways by this community and I hope to continue sharing with one another from a distance. (E-mail works and maybe some of you will visit me!)
Some of you will wonder about my Lay Leader position. This transition is happening so fast that I imagine Pastor Molly hasn’t yet figured that out. I hope all of you will be in prayer for her as she discerns this position. I trust God will open her eyes to the proper person to step into this role. I also trust that God will plant the seed in the heart of the one who should step in. It’s an exciting time at Redondo First UMC!
