Greetings RezDowntowners,
Last night we had the privilege of hosting Halloween Trunk or Treat with Community Linc at 40th and Troost. Several RezDowntown families decorated their trunks, dressed up in costume and celebrated a great tradition of trick or treating from trunk to trunk. It was a night of service that clearly brought about light, life and joy to everyone who participated. What an amazing evening it was! Thank you to everyone who turned out to make it such a special night in Kansas City!
We are hoping to continue this spirit of celebration into this weekend. This weekend, in particular, we have the privilege of gathering together for worship on October 31st and November 1st. These two days according to the Christian calendar represent the Gospel in miniature. First on Saturday, October 31st several Christian traditions celebrate All Hallow’s Eve (or Halloween) and in some traditions this day is referred to as the day of the dead. All Hallow’s Eve offers us a chance to remember the Christian Martyrs both past and present, people who, like Christ, paid the ultimate price on account of their faith. It is a day to remember the sacrificial life and love of the faithful. Then on November first, we turn around and celebrate the hope of the resurrection through a day known as All Saints Day. This Sunday marks a day to acknowledge our collective clouds of witnesses, all of the saints who have gone before us, the people who shaped and molded our lives in order that we might become the best versions of the people God created us to be. Each year on All Saints Day, I thank God for my mentors, for the people who have influenced and shaped me, without whom, my life would have been drastically different. This time each year I always seem to remember my grandma and how she shaped and influenced me to the point that I eventually entered into the ministry. I am grateful for her influence! Please be sure to take time this weekend to remember your saints past as well, and thank God for them in prayer.
Lastly, I want to invite you to join us in worship this weekend as we’ll be welcoming the Rev. Dr. James Forbes. He is a highly acclaimed author, scholar and nationally sought-after speaker, affectionately referred to in national and international religious circles as the preacher’s preacher because of his extensive preaching career and his charismatic style. Newsweek magazine once recognized Forbes as one of the 12 “most effective preachers” in the English-speaking world. He is going to be great! I hope you’ll invite friends to join us in worship this weekend. And be sure to remember that this weekend marks Daylight Saving Time! We will fall back one hour on Sunday morning!
Daylight Saving Time begins this weekend. Please set your clocks back one hour Saturday night.

- Coats for Lazarus Ministries – Please bring the coats to Connection Point each weekend through Nov. 15th. Fall quickly turns to winter and the sojourners who visit the Lazarus Ministries boutique each Saturday will soon need winter coats. We need donations of winter coats, new or gently used, for men and women (no children) in Adult sizes L and XL only, as the sojourners often layer clothing and need the bigger sizes. Volunteer Tom Burchett will take the coats to Lazarus Ministries each week. Thank you for your generosity. For questions, email Tom at tomburchett@kc.rr.com or visit rezdowntown.org/donatecoats.
- Empty Bowls Project: The Empty Bowls movement started 25 years ago as a grassroots effort and it’s been in maybe 40 cities across the US. Different groups have sponsored the effort, and sometimes churches have gotten involved. It just depends on the city and the people. The event will be Friday, Nov. 6 at Arts Tech, 1522 Holmes Street, Kansas City, MO 64108. Red Star and the Clay Guild are both making bowls and have been working on them since September. The goal is 1,000. The clay has been donated and both organizations are well on their way to making the bowls. Harvester’s and others have been advertising the event on their website:http://my.harvesters.org/events?cid=1&ceid=158&cerid=0&cdt=11%2F6%2F2015
