Advent Devotion "A Teenage Love Song" for Sunday, 29 November 2015 from Society of St. Andrew of Big Island, Virginia, United States

"A Teenage Love Song"
Sunday, 29 November 2015
Luke 1:46 Then Miryam said,
“My soul magnifies Adonai;
I have always had a mixed reaction to the word “magnify” when I read Mary’s love song from Luke’s gospel. The word may mean “to prize or extol” but literally it means “to make great.” How does one make the Lord God Almighty great? As a young boy I would revel in seeing tiny squirming creatures on the slide of my microscope. The lens would make the small, large; the unseen, seen. I remember trying to use a magnifying glass to catch the sun’s rays to set paper afire, so it would burst into flame.
Do these instances help illuminate how Mary, the mother of our Lord, or even you and I can “magnify” the Lord? What is small and insignificant, even unseen, becomes of importance and significance? Concentrating with a focus can transform and bring glory, perhaps? God chose as his handmaiden a young girl in ancient Israel to be the bearer of the Word to change the course of human history. Could God use you or me today? Could we, with simple obedience like Mary, “make great” God’s love in a way that will touch someone this Advent and “make great” what might otherwise be lost, unseen, or unappreciated?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, there is no way that I can make You greater but, by your Spirit, use my small gifts to magnify to others your love for us all in Christ our Lord. Amen.[William Nash Wade, Strasburg, Virginia]
