Celebrating Thanksgiving at Fort Riley
From my family to yours, we hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving! Despite the challenges we face here at home and across the globe, we still have many reasons to be grateful. Thank you to the servicemen and women who weren’t able to be with their families over the weekend because they are protecting us and preserving our nation. Robba and I had the honor to share a meal at Fort Riley with Major General Wayne Grigsby, Jr., his family, and the Big Red One community. As we express our gratitude this Thanksgiving to our soldiers and their families, we also ask God’s continued blessings for our country.
VA Fails to Hold Bad Actors Accountable
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is once again failing to hold bad actors accountable. The Inspector General identified two VA employees who had manipulated the VA hiring system for their own gain. They created new positions for themselves with fewer responsibilities, but maintained their previous salaries. Common sense says that if you do less work, you should be paid less. It is a disgrace that instead of firing and removal from the VA altogether, they have simply been demoted. Our veterans deserve a VA worthy of their service and sacrifice. Click here to learn more.
Town Hall Meetings in Marshall, Brown and Pawnee Counties
Beattie and Summerfield
I continued my Kansas Listening Tour this week with a stop in Marshall County. I was in Beattie on Monday where around 30 town hall attendees stopped by the Beattie Community Center. We discussed the threat from the Islamic State, the burden of federal regulations on small town banks, and health care for veterans. Thanks to Bill Phillipi and Kevin O’Neil for coordinating my visit. After the town hall, I drove to Summerfield and visited the Holy Family Parish Hall, which was built in 1921 and is one of many beautiful, old churches throughout our state.
Hiawatha
I enjoyed good company and conversations at my town hall meeting at the Fisher Community Center in Hiawatha. Our discussion included the continued instability in the Middle East as a result of the Islamic State, care for our veterans, the importance of quality health care to rural communities, and banking system reform. I was glad to visit with the more than 40 people in attendance who came to make their opinions and suggestions heard. Thanks to Hiawatha City Administrator Mike Nichols for coordinating my visit.
Larned
It was great to see familiar faces at my Pawnee County Kansas Listening Tour Stop in Larned on Wednesday. More than 30 area residents stopped by to discuss issues facing our state and nation including the threat of the Islamic State, immigration, executive overreach, and the budget. Thanks to Janet Olson at the Larned Area Chamber of Commerce for hosting the event.
