The Daily Guide-The Daily Devotional grow. pray. study. - The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection of Leawood, Kansa, United States for Sunday, 29 November 2015 – "Prayer Tip" "Hope: Light in the Darkness"

Daily Scripture:
Isaiah 9:
1 (2) The people living in darkness
have seen a great light;
upon those living in the land that lies
in the shadow of death, light has dawned.
2 (3) You have enlarged the nation
and increased their joy;
they rejoice in your presence
as if rejoicing at harvest time,
the way men rejoice
when dividing up the spoil.
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word,
    and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
2     He was with God in the beginning.
3 All things came to be through him,
    and without him nothing made had being.
4 In him was life,
    and the life was the light of mankind.
5 The light shines in the darkness,
    and the darkness has not suppressed it.
Prayer Tip:
This week we celebrated Thanksgiving, and now we begin the Advent season. This is often the time of gatherings in our families, with our friends and coworkers, and even in the community at large. These gatherings can always be blessed by prayer, and below we offer some prayers and hymns for all occasions, blessings of praise and thanksgiving, and preparation for the celebration of Jesus’ birth.
Please plan on joining Pastor Katherine Ebling-Frazier and Lynette Holt in the Wesley Covenant Chapel on Thursday December 10 from 6:30 – 8:00 PM for an Advent Service of Prayer and Worship.
FOR THE FRUITS OF THIS CREATION (United Methodist Hymnal, #97)
For the fruits of this creation, thanks be to God;
for good gifts to every nation, thanks be to God;
for the plowing, sowing, reaping, silent growth while we are sleeping,
future needs in earth’s safekeeping, thanks be to God.
In the just reward of labor, God’s will is done;
in the help we give our neighbor, God’s will is done;
in our world-wide task of caring for the hungry and despairing,
in the harvests we are sharing, God’s will is done.
For the harvests of the Spirit, thanks be to God;
for the good we all inherit, thanks be to God;
for the wonders that astound us, for the truths that still confound us, most of all,
that love has found us, thanks be to God.
PSALM 11:1-4
Hallelujah! I give thanks to God with everything I’ve got —
Wherever good people gather, and in the congregation.
God’s works are so great, worth
A lifetime of study — endless enjoyment!
Splendor and beauty mark his craft;
His generosity never gives out.
His miracles are his memorial —
This God of Grace, this God of Love.
 (The Message)
Psalm:
(0) For the leader. By David:
(1) In Adonai I find refuge.
So how can you say to me,
“Flee like a bird to the mountains!
2 See how the wicked are drawing their bows
and setting their arrows on the string,
to shoot from the shadows at honest men.
3 If the foundations are destroyed,
what can the righteous do?”
4 Adonai is in his holy temple.
Adonai, his throne is in heaven.
His eyes see and test humankind.

Table Grace
Our Father, we thank Thee for this food that lies before us. We thank Thee we are able to reach out and touch the hand of one next to us. We thank thee for the many things which we so often take for granted, for we can hear and see and walk. Help us to always come to Thee for confidence, and courage, and hope. And we thank Thee on this Thanksgiving day for the many blessings we have enjoyed during the past year, and may we continue to receive Thy blessings during the coming year. Amen
PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING (United Methodist Hymnal, #875)
God of love, we thank you for all with which you have blessed us even to this day: for the gift of joy in days of health and strength, and for the gifts of your abiding presence and promise in days of pain and grief. We praise you for home and friends, and for our baptism, and place in your church with all who have faithfully lived and died. Above all else we thank you for Jesus, who knew our griefs, who died our death and rose for our sake, and who lives and prays for us. Amen
Advent (United Methodist Hymnal, #201)
Merciful God,
you sent your messengers the prophets
to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation.
Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins,
that we may celebrate aright the commemoration of the nativity,
the coming in glory of Jesus Christ our Redeemer;
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
One god, forever and ever. Amen.[Katherine Ebling-Frazier, Pastor of Prayer]
