"Fearfully and Wonderfully Made"
Tuesday, 1 December 2015
Psalm 139:14 I thank you because I am awesomely made,
wonderfully; your works are wonders —
I know this very well.

One of the last keepsakes my mother gave me prior to her passing was my baby book, which she had kept for over fifty years. Inside were cards and letters of celebration from family members and my parent’s friends. Tucked inside the back, I found my certificate of baptism, lovingly secured.
Though I was too young to remember that special day, I smiled and gave thanks so many years later. That certificate was a reminder of God’s great love for me and my parents, a reminder that I was and remain “fearfully and wonderfully made.” I am thankful for that divine breath of life, and I marvel that my journey through life is unique, along with every other creature in God’s creation. Each of us walks a blessed path that no one else has done before or will ever do again.
Today, I am thankful for my wonderful church family in the congregation where my wife and I worship and have been blessed with love, support, and God’s gift of two special children. In that sacred tradition, we brought them before the altar of God for their baptisms and gave thanks before our friends and family, just as my family had done for me years ago.
As we watch and wait in wonder this Advent season, preparing for the birth of Jesus, let us be reminded of the miracle of our own birth, and praise God with joy and thanksgiving.
Prayer: Thanks be to God for the gift of life and for communities of faith everywhere that welcome, baptize, love, and nourish us in faith. Amen.[Bob Brooks, Fredericksburg, Virginia]
