Pastor Penny Ellwood's eNote from The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Blue Springs in Blue Springs, Missouri, United States for Friday, 3 June 2016
Resurrection Blue Springs,
Greetings this morning from Topeka, where I have been attending the Great Plains Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. Each year clergy and lay delegates come together from Kansas and Nebraska for four days to worship, fellowship, and conduct the business of the conference. During these sessions, members of the conference hear reports of past and ongoing work; adopt future goals, programs and budgets and ordain clergy members as deacons and elders. Katherine Ebling-Frazier of our Leawood campus, along with her husband, Andrew are two of the 19 being ordained as Deacon or Elder in a special worship service later tonight. This is a big day and major accomplishment for this clergy couple!
One of the highlights was the opening worship yesterday morning. Elias Chacour, an Arab-Christian-Palestinian who was the Archbishop of Akko, Haifa, Nazareth and all of Galilee from 2006 to 2014 spoke to us. He shared with us the experience of the Palestinian people living in present-day Israel and challenged us to not forget our brothers and sisters who are suffering. We also got an opportunity to celebrate Bishop Scott Jones and his wife Mary Lou for 12 years of service as our Episcopal leader. We will be welcoming a new Bishop later this year.
We will also be represented in our Missouri conference, which begins today and runs through Monday by four at-large members from our Downtown and Blue Springs campuses in our unique relationship with two conferences. Wendy Hildenbrand and Kyle Ray are representing us from our Blue Springs campus.
I will be back for worship on Sunday as we continue our "live" sermon series Living in the Mess. This week we turn to the messes we experience by virtue of simply trying to raise a family. We’ll take a look at how we might reduce some of the chaos of family life and give our children a strong family culture they can carry with them throughout their lives. I hope you'll invite your friends and join us. We'll also be sharing holy communion.
