First United Methodist Church of Redondo Beach, California, United States eNews for Thursday, 28 September 2017: "Sunday worship, Rummage Sale and more..." Rummage Sale on Saturday from 9-4 - Sunday Worship at 8:30 & 10:30am.
From Pastor Molly: Devotion
There are so many ways to pray--with words you have memorized or that you speak from the heart, with silences and sighs and gestures. Prayer is conversation with God, when we sometimes speak and sometimes listen. It gives us a way to "tune in" to God's presence.
One of my favorite writers, Anne Lamott, wrote a book about her favorite three prayers: Help, Thanks, Wow. And although I love the elegant poetry of a beautifully crafted prayer, I treasure even more than we can come to God with these unassuming, everyday words and ideas. In bringing these unintimidating, honest words to God, we are admitting that we need some help, confessing that we are the recipients of a grace beyond ourselves, and standing in awe of our God of wonder.
At a recent gathering of United Methodist clergy in our area, the writer Brian McLaren shared a longer list of the words that might start our prayers. He began with "here," as if our prayer were simply the response to a roll call. Sometimes it's enough--or at least enough for today--to just show up, tune in, and quiet down for some time with God.
May you find a way, with words or silence, to be present with God today. Breathe in, exhale, and know that you are loved.
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly

Philippians 2:1-13
Scripture Text: Philippians 2:
1 Therefore, if you have any encouragement for me from your being in union with the Messiah, any comfort flowing from love, any fellowship with me in the Spirit, or any compassion and sympathy, 2 then complete my joy by having a common purpose and a common love, by being one in heart and mind. 3 Do nothing out of rivalry or vanity; but, in humility, regard each other as better than yourselves — 4 look out for each other’s interests and not just for your own.
5 Let your attitude toward one another be governed by your being in union with the Messiah Yeshua:
6 Though he was in the form of God,
he did not regard equality with God
something to be possessed by force.
7 On the contrary, he emptied himself,
in that he took the form of a slave
by becoming like human beings are.
And when he appeared as a human being,
8 he humbled himself still more
by becoming obedient even to death —
death on a stake as a criminal!
9 Therefore God raised him to the highest place
and gave him the name above every name;
10 that in honor of the name given Yeshua,
every knee will bow —
in heaven, on earth and under the earth —
11 and every tongue will acknowledge[Philippians 2:11 Isaiah 45:23]
that Yeshua the Messiah is Adonai —
to the glory of God the Father.
12 So, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed when I was with you, it is even more important that you obey now when I am away from you: keep working out your deliverance with fear and trembling,[Philippians 2:12 Psalm 2:11] 13 for God is the one working among you both the willing and the working for what pleases him.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary: Philippians 2:1-13
Verse 1
[1] If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,
If there be therefore any consolation — In the grace of Christ.
If any comfort — In the love of God. If any fellowship of the Holy Ghost; if any bowels of mercies - Resulting therefrom; any tender affection towards each other.
Verse 2
[2] Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
Think the same thing — Seeing Christ is your common Head.
Having the same love — To God, your common Father.
Being of one soul — Animated with the same affections and tempers, as ye have all drank ill to one spirit.
Of one mind — Tenderly rejoicing and grieving together.
Verse 3
[3] Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
Do nothing through contention — Which is inconsistent with your thinking the same thing.
Or vainglory — Desire of praise, which is directly opposite to the love of God.
But esteem each the others better than themselves — (For every one knows more evil of himself than he can of another:) Which is a glorious fruit of the Spirit, and an admirable help to your continuing "of one soul."
Verse 4
[4] Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
Aim not every one at his own things — Only. If so, ye have not bowels of mercies.
Verse 6
[6] Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
Who being in the essential form — The incommunicable nature.
Of God — From eternity, as he was afterward in the form of man; real God, as real man.
Counted it no act of robbery — That is the precise meaning of the words,-no invasion of another's prerogative, but his own strict and unquestionable right.
To be equal with God — the word here translated equal, occurs in the adjective form five or six times in the New Testament, Matthew 20:12; Luke 6:34; John 5:18; Acts 11:17; Revelation 21:16. In all which places it expresses not a bare resemblance, but a real and proper equalitg. It here implies both the fulness and the supreme height of the Godhead; to which are opposed, he emptied and he humbled himself.
Verse 7
[7] But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
Yet — He was so far from tenaciously insisting upon, that he willingly relinquished, his claim. He was content to forego the glories of the Creator, and to appear in the form of a creature; nay, to he made in the likeness of the fallen creatures; and not only to share the disgrace, but to suffer the punishment, due to the meanest and vilest among them all.
He emptied himself — Of that divine fulness, which he received again at his exaltation. Though he remained full, John 1:14, yet he appeared as if he had been empty; for he veiled his fulness from the sight of men and angels. Yea, he not only veiled, but, in some sense, renounced, the glory which he had before the world began.
Taking — And by that very act emptying himself.
The form of a servant — The form, the likeness, the fashion, though not exactly the same, are yet nearly related to each other. The form expresses something absolute; the likeness refers to other things of the same kind; the fashion respects what appears to sight and sense.
Being made in the likeness of men — A real man, like other men. Hereby he took the form of a servant.
Verse 8
[8] And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
And being found in fashion as a man — A common man, without any peculiar excellence or comeliness.
He humbled himself — To a still greater depth.
Becoming obedient — To God, though equal with him.
Even unto death — The greatest instance both of humiliation and obedience.
Yea, the death of the cross — Inflicted on few but servants or slaves.
Verse 9
[9] Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
Wherefore — Because of his voluntary humiliation and obedience. He humbled himself; but God hath exalted him - So recompensing his humiliation.
And hath given him — So recompensing his emptying himself.
A name which is above every name — Dignity and majesty superior to every creature.
Verse 10
[10] That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
That every knee — That divine honour might be paid in every possible manner by every creature.
Might bow — Either with love or trembling.
Of those in heaven, earth, under the earth — That is, through the whole universe.
Verse 11
[11] And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
And every tongue — Even of his enemies.
Confess that Jesus Christ is Lord — Jehovah; not now "in the form of a servant," but enthroned in the glory of God the Father.
Verse 12
[12] Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
Wherefore — Having proposed Christ's example, he exhorts them to secure the salvation which Christ has purchased.
As ye have always — Hitherto.
Obeyed — Both God, and me his minister.
Now in my absence — When ye have not me to instruct, assist, and direct you.
Work out your own salvation — Herein let every man aim at his own things.
With fear and trembling — With the utmost care and diligence.
Verse 13
[13] For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
For it is God — God alone, who is with you, though I am not.
That worketh in you according to his good pleasure — Not for any merit of yours. Yet his influences are not to supersede, but to encourage, our own efforts.
Work out your own salvation — Here is our duty.
For it is God that worketh in you — Here is our encouragement. And O, what a glorious encouragement, to have the arm of Omnipotence stretched out for our support and our succour!

Special Music: "Sanctus and Benedictus," sung by the Chancel Choir

"Sanctus and Benedictus"
In the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom[2] and the Liturgy of St. Basil:[5]
In the Liturgy of St. James:[4][n 3]
In Latin[edit]
In the Roman Rite:[6]
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus
Dominus Deus Sabaoth.
Pleni sunt cæli et terra gloria tua.
Hosanna in excelsis.
Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini.
Hosanna in excelsis.
In the Roman Rite, the Sanctus also forms part of the solemn hymn of praise Te Deum laudamus, but with the addition of a reference to the "majesty" of the Lord's glory in the Pleni sunt verse (the phrase pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua becomes pleni sunt caeli et terra maiestatis gloriae tuae). The Benedictus is not included in the Te Deum, and the Sanctus is therefore included as part of that hymn as follows:
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth.
Pleni sunt cæli et terra maiestatis gloriæ tuæ
In the Mozarabic Rite:[7]
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus,
Dominus Deus Sabaoth:
Pleni sunt cæli et terra gloria maiestatis tuæ,
Hosanna filio David.
Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini.
Hosanna in excelsis.
Hagios, hagios, hagios Kyrie o Theos.
In English[edit]
The Sanctus appears thus in the 1549 Book of Common Prayer (and as set to music by John Merbecke in 1550[8]):
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts:
heaven (& earth) are full of thy glory:
Hosanna, in the highest.
Blessed is he that commeth in the name of the Lord:
Glory to thee, O lord in the highest.
In the 1559 BCP it appears without the Benedictus:[9]
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts,
heaven and earth are full of thy glory,
glory be to thee, O Lord most high.
English version of some Lutherans:[10]
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Sabaoth;
heaven and earth are full of thy glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord
Hosanna in the highest.
In 1973 the International Consultation on English Texts (ICET) produced an ecumenical version that at that time was adopted by Catholics, Anglicans and others:[11][12]
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
Since 2011 the Roman Missal in English has:[13]
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

DESSERTS FOR SHARED BREAD
Our dessert supply is still low! Would you like to help? Homemade treats are treasured by our guests – but purchased treats would be wonderful, as well. Please wrap desserts tightly and mark for Shared Bread. Deliver Sunday (when you come for church) through Wednesday to the church kitchen (or the office if kitchen is closed.) Wednesday deliveries should be here by 4:00pm to help us plan our meal better. THANK YOU!
Ever since last November, we’ve had a notable absence in our choir – our soprano section leader Julie Brody. She arrived for choir rehearsal at the end of October and told me that she had been offered the chance to sing in a rock opera in an off-Broadway theatre in New York. She was sad to leave because she really had come to feel that our church was her extended family. Rather than accept her resignation, I suggested a sabbatical – take several months off to see how it goes and I would fill her spot with an “artist-in-residence”. It’s easier to nail down a great singer in this town if they only have to do it for a limited time frame. Thus, we enjoyed the wonderful music (and personality) of Caroline McKenzie, and then the shimmering voice of Susan Kasenow. Julie informed me recently that I predicted right – her show lost its funding and never made it to the theatre, but her husband, who is a screenwriter, has been offered a job as creative producer with A & E, so they’ll be there for another year or so...

Ever since last November, we've had a notable absence in our choir – our soprano section leader Julie Brody. She arrived for choir rehearsal at the end of October and told me that she had been offered the chance to sing in a rock opera in an off-Broadway theatre in New York. She was sad to leave because she really had come to feel that our church was her extended family. Rather than accept her resignation, I suggested a sabbatical – take several months off to see how it goes and I would fill her spot with an "artist-in-residence". It's easier to nail down a great singer in this town if they only have to do it for a limited time frame. Thus, we enjoyed the wonderful music (and personality) of Caroline McKenzie, and then the shimmering voice of Susan Kasenow. Julie informed me recently that I predicted right – her show lost its funding and never made it to the theatre, but her husband, who is a screenwriter, has been offered a job as creative producer with A & E, so they'll be there for another year or so. Susan has agreed to stay on with us, which is a blessing to the church and for our music program. In the meantime, Julie will be coming back to visit periodically, and has asked if she can sing with us (is this a trick question?). So, in 2 weeks, on the 15th, Julie will be back with us and will join Susan singing the Pie Jesu from the Andrew Lloyd Webber Requiem, and will sing the Rachmaninov Vocalise for the postlude. Be there or be sorry.
Charles Gounod lived in Paris during the 1800s, passing away in 1893, making him roughly contemporary with Guiseppi Verdi. He is best known for his Ave Maria, based on a piece by Bach (which we've done here), and for his operas Faust and Romeo et Juliette. From 1870 to 1874, he lived in England, where he became the first conductor of what is now the Royal Choral Society. In his later years, he devoted himself to writing sacred music. A devout Catholic, he had an image of the face of Jesus carved into the music desk on his piano. In 1855, he composed his Messe solennelle en l'honneur de Sainte-Cécile, or St. Cecilia Mass. It was written for large forces – 3 soloists, mixed chorus, organ and a large orchestra with 6 (count 'em, 6!) harps. Our anthem today is the Sanctus and Benedictus from that mass.
Charles Wesley, the son of Samuel Wesley and brother of John Wesley, was born at Epworth, England, Dec. 18, 1707. He was educated at Westminster School and afterwards at Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated with an M.A. In 1735, he took Orders and immediately proceeded with his brother John to Georgia, both being employed as missionaries. His stay in Georgia was short, and he returned to England in 1736. For many years he engaged with his brother in preaching the Gospel. He died March 29, 1788. To Charles Wesley has been justly assigned the appellation of the "Bard of Methodism." His prominence in hymn writing may be judged from the fact that in the "Wesleyan Hymn Book," 623 of the 770 hymns were written by him. He also published more than thirty poetical works, written either by himself alone, or in conjunction with his brother. The number hymns he wrote is said to be over 6500 (!). This week's opening hymn, Maker In Whom We Live, is one of many of his that populate our hymnbook.
"Maker In Whom We Live" by Charles Wesley, 1707-1788
1. Maker, in whom we live, in whom we are and move,
the glory, power, and praise receive for thy creating love.
Let all the angel throng give thanks to God on high,
while earth repeats the joyful song and echoes to the sky.
2. Incarnate Deity, let all the ransomed race
render in thanks their lives to thee for thy redeeming grace.
The grace to sinners showed ye heavenly choirs proclaim,
and cry, "Salvation to our God, salvation to the Lamb!"
3. Spirit of Holiness, let all thy saints adore
thy sacred energy, and bless thine heart-renewing power.
No angel tongues can tell thy love's ecstatic height,
the glorious joy unspeakable, the beatific sight.
4. Eternal, Triune God, let all the hosts above
let all on earth below record and dwell upon thy love.
When heaven and earth are fled before thy glorious face,
sing all the saints thy love hath made thine everlasting praise.
