Alumni Begin Master’s Programs at Regent’s University London
As students arrive on campus this week, several newly minted Elmira College alumni are headed across the pond to earn their master’s degrees at Regent’s University London.
The alumni, including Lily Burtner ‘17 and Spencer Cocca ‘17, are part of a unique 4+1 partnership with Regent’s University London allowing EC students to complete their graduate degree work while studying abroad.
We caught up with Lily and Spencer this summer and asked more about why they applied for the program and their goals for the future.
Why did you decide to apply for the program?
“I decided to apply for this program because I knew I wanted to attend an international graduate school and with the connection to EC, I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity.” – Lily
“I decided to apply to the Regent's University London after attending an Enactus job fair and most of the representatives were looking for marketing candidates who had a master’s degree.” - Spencer
What are you studying at Regent's University? How did you decide on that?
"During my undergraduate career at EC I studied business administration and international studies so a master’s degree in international business seemed like the perfect next step. My initial interest in this field derived from in-depth undergraduate courses at EC that sparked my enthusiasm and made me want to pursue it further.” - Lily
“I will be studying for a masters of the arts in luxury brand management and I decided that because I have always seen myself working for a luxury brand and I saw this as the best opportunity to achieve this dream.” – Spencer
What are you most excited for and why?
“I am most excited to be living and attending school in the heart of London. This will offer countless opportunities and act as a steppingstone for global networking.” – Lily
What will you bring with you from Elmira College?
“I will bring my experiences and education from Elmira College, but physically I'll be bringing my alumni sweatshirt to keep me warm this winter.”- Spencer
What are your future career or academic goals?
“When I finish my master’s program at Regent’s University London, I hope to work for a multinational corporation perhaps in the field of corporate communications or in a department with international outreach.” – Lily
“I hope to work for a luxury car or clothing company. I would like to get my Ph.D. later in life and teach in my retirement.” – Spencer
Regent’s offers a variety of postgraduate programs, with courses offering a balance between individual and group work, lectures and practical seminars, and placements and workshops.
Emphasizing global leadership, an entrepreneurial approach and intercultural intelligence, Regent’s focuses on connecting students from across the world with representation of approximately 140 different student nationalities.

2017-2018 Elmira College Theatre Season Announced
The 2017-2018 Theatre Season at Elmira College promises to be one of the best in the over 100-year history of the program. Comedy, drama, and musical theatre are all included in this year’s offerings.
The season begins in September with Barbara Lebow’s touching drama A Shayna Maidel. “An emotional powerhouse of almost overwhelming proportions,” the play concerns a Jewish father and daughter who escaped the atrocities of Poland in World War II trying to reunite with a daughter who arrives in New York shortly after the war. The New York Times called it “a tribute to the sustaining power of family and to man’s indomitability.” Performances are September 14 through 17 in Gibson Theatre.
God of Carnage, Yasmina Reza’s biting modern comedy (to be directed by senior theatre major Julie Salinero ’18) will fill the Watson Arena November 9 through 12. Two sets of parents, one of whose child has hurt the other at a public park, meet to discuss the matter in a civilized manner. However, as the evening goes on, the parents become increasingly childish, resulting in the evening devolving into chaos. The play won both London’s Olivier Award and New York’s Tony Award for Best Play.
How The Other Half Loves is a classic farce by the inimitable Alan Ayckbourn. The plot is complex - three men all work for the same firm. One of the younger men is having an affair with the wife of the oldest, and when each returns home suspiciously late one night - or early one morning - they invent a story about having to spend time smoothing domestic matters in the home of the third man and his wife. Of course, the third couple has to show up to put the fat in the fire, but that complication only adds to the fun of this famous farce. Performances are February 8 through 11 in Gibson Theatre.
The ever-popular series of one-act plays directed by students will inhabit Watson Arena from March 22 through 25.
The season wraps up with the musical comedy, The Apple Tree, featuring three interrelated one-act musicals – Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden (based upon Twain), The Lady and the Tiger, and a modern Cinderella tale entitled Passionella. Created by the brilliant songwriting team that brought forth such hits as Fiddler on the Roof and She Loves Me, this “witty, tuneful, and utterly charming” musical takes the Gibson Theatre stage May 24 through 26.
All Elmira College Theatre productions are free and open to the public. Seating is first come, first served. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday performances begin at 8:00 p.m., with matinees at 2:00 p.m.on Sunday. (Please note there is no Sunday performance of The Apple Tree.)
