“Come, Holy Spirit”
We pray that a lot with a deep longing that we would be led and guided in all that we say and do.
When we pray, “Come, Holy Spirit” we aren’t insinuating that the Spirit is not present or needs invited into our gathering spaces. No, what we are saying is that we are orienting ourselves to the work of the Spirit.
We are hungry and expectant for the Spirit to move. We want to be drawn deeper and deeper into relationship with the Triune God.
Justin told me a joke recently that he heard from a friend at school. The friend said, “my grandpa told me, ‘I said I love you once… if it ever changes I will let you know.’” That is funny, but we all know that is important to hear over and over, “I love you.” The affirmation and reminder communicated in these words means a great deal in a relationship.
The same can be said for praying, “Come, Holy Spirit.” We know that the Spirit came on Pentecost and doesn’t depart this world only to return when we pray magic words. Rather, the Spirit is moving in and among us.
We simply want to remind ourselves that the Spirit is active and that we are expectant and willing.
So, when we pray, “Come, Holy Spirit,” may it not become something that we all just say. May we truly open up our hearts and minds to hear and be shaped by the moving of the Spirit. May we be ready and willing to be led (even in ways we did not think would be take place or be possible) by the Spirit.
May we be a people who always gather expectantly and are sent out bearing the Spirit; loving everyone that we meet.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Cara
