Sunday, 12 August 2018 at Mount Carmel Church of the Nazarene in San Diego, California, United States "Instead Do This: The Lord's Prayer" Matthew 6:9-13 today's preacher is Reverend Bryant Dougharty with the Senior Pastors, Reverend Jeremy and Chelsea Peugh.
Matthew 6:
9 You, therefore, pray like this:
‘Our Father in heaven!
May your Name be kept holy.
10 May your Kingdom come,
your will be done on earth as in heaven.
11 Give us the food we need today.
12 Forgive us what we have done wrong,
as we too have forgiven those who have wronged us.
13 And do not lead us into hard testing,
but keep us safe from the Evil One.
[a]For kingship, power and glory are yours forever. Amen.’
(Complete Jewish Bible).
This is the model prayer that Jesus taught His disciples, His actual prayer as He approached the cross is John 17. What does it mean to really pray the Lord's Prayer?
Prayer is exciting.
An example from hospital chaplaincy praying this prayer.
Two types of prayer:
1. Mindful Meditation (Lectio Divina).
Reading Scripture as prayer while concentrating on your body. Focus and refocus on your prayer and Scripture as well as your body.
2. Matra Meditation.
Example praying the rosary.
Learning to staying connected to prayer and God.
Prayer affected the back of the brain.
Connecting to a higher power that is greater than us.
The truth is we love ourselves in loving others.
The more we love God the more we can love others and ourselves.
1st: God's Name is Holy.
God loves people out of sin.
1 Peter.
Proverbs 9:10.
Matthew 4:17.
God's Kingdom is now as well as in the future.
We are to kive this prayer in action.
We are eager to go and give to other the physical needs they do not have, but is our heart broken for people who do not know you as Lord and Savior.
The key is to Ttust God.
We believe God will provide all we need bt Trusting him.
James 2:7.
Forgive our sins as we forgive others their sins as they have sinned against others.
John 20:19
Our desire to forgive others so that we will be forgiven.
Jesus parables of forgiveness.
Hell is terrifying that is filled with people who refuse to forgive others.
God never promises to make it easy or being removed from being tempted because He provides us ways to be delivered from sin.
God loves us enough to give strength to live holy lives.
Check out the Epistle of James.
We are and will be the first fruits of His Kingdom.
We need to be a church whose hearts are broken for the sin in the world.
Matthew 6.
We are to give God the glory when we are able to assist others to meet their needs and live holy, sinless lives.
Amen.’
We do the Christian thing because we are forgiven and made holy by Gid.
Prayer. Benediction. Sending forth to live in God's Power of His Holiness.
