Hawaii church provides disaster relief during hurricane, wildfire
The people of Kahului Church of the Nazarene in Hawaii found themselves shifting quickly from hurricane disaster relief to wildfire relief recently as they ministered within their community. Several Red Cross workers were so moved by the grace and love the church members exhibited that they attended service at the Kahului church the following Sunday.community as water and batteries went flying off the shelf.”
Wednesday, 22 August, the day before the hurricane was expected to hit the island, the Kahului church was serving at Harbor Lights — a local condominium complex where the church has an outreach ministry — when they decided to partner with the local Red Cross to establish a shelter for families who lived in storm surge areas, the homeless community, and tourists who were trapped on the island.
“On top of [providing resources to Harbor Lights], we also got a phone call that the Maui High School gym was being turned into an evacuation shelter, and the Red Cross needed help preparing it,” Cruz said. “So, our church helped serve there along with other Christian churches.”
They provided clothing, bedding, water, food, and even coloring books and crayons for those who needed them.
“I was scared,” Cruz said. “Between taking care of my own family, our church families, [the families at the shelter], and also the families in the condominium three blocks from our church, it was just exhausting.”
Local authorities announced Thursday evening that the hurricane had de-escalated to a tropical storm, but it still dumped nearly 60 inches of rain on the island. That is when Kahului residents heard news of a fire 30 minutes away in Lahaina.
“Then fire broke out on the other side of the island,” Cruz said. “We partnered with other churches to love on the community there. And I was wondering what God was doing in all this — why is He allowing this to happen?”
More than 20 homes and 30 vehicles were damaged or destroyed in Lahaina and Kaanapali, and Lahaina was completely without electricity.
Cruz and the rest of the church immediately shifted their focus from hurricane relief to the new disaster at hand.
The Kahului church partnered with nearly 10 churches to provide relief — donating items and food for the fire victims. After the fire was completely contained, the churches cleaned up the local Lahaina Baptist church so they could use the building as a distribution center for the donated items.
Several Red Cross workers were so moved by the grace and love the church members exhibited that they attended service at the Kahului church the following Sunday.
“I had to come check out this church,” said the husband of one Red Cross volunteer. “My wife kept telling me about these church people that would come every day and donate to the shelter and even spend the night. So, I had to see for myself what you guys were about.”
Cruz received a sense of peace from what he witnessed amidst the disaster.
“I was reassured of His presence among His people,” Cruz said. “His face was evident and His movement was faster than the storm among the servant nature of His children.”
The Kahului church will continue serving their neighbors over the next week in Lahaina and neighboring areas.

Philippines pioneer remembered
Wilfredo Aguillon Manaois, pioneer Philippines pastor, educator, missionary, and district superintendent, passed away 19 August after a prolonged battle with cancer and a recent bout with pneumonia. He was 89.Wilfredo Aguillon Manaois, pioneer Philippines pastor, educator, missionary, and district superintendent, passed away 19 August after a prolonged battle with cancer and a recent bout with pneumonia. He was 89.
"A holy man and fine educator,” said Donald Owens, general superintendent emeritus and founding president of Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary. “I pray for more ministers like him and his talented companion."
Manaois was born 12 October into a Roman Catholic family in Enclaro, the oldest town on the Philippine island of Negros.
After he graduated from high school in 1946, Manaois gave his life to Christ at a Baptist church in Bacolod City, where he attended college. Manaois returned to his hometown after his college graduation to teach English, history, and mathematics for the next six years at Southern Negros College while also serving as a high school teacher and later as principal.
When Olivet Nazarene College (now University) graduate Greg Tingson came to preach at a high school convocation, Manaois felt a call to preach for the first time.
On 12 March 1955, Wilfredo married Lourdes Perez Gayo, and thanks to Nazarene missionaries John and Lillian Pattee, the couple became members of the Binalbagan Church of the Nazarene in 1956.
Two years later, the Manaoises both enrolled as students at Fitkin Memorial Nazarene Bible Training College (now Philippine Nazarene College) in La Trinidad. After studying there for a year, the Manaoises returned to Negros to teach at Himamaylan High School while Wilfredo also pastored the Binalbagan Church of the Nazarene.
The Manaoises continued their studies at Fitkin Memorial, and Wilfredo graduated with a Bachelor of Theology in 1964. He served as the pastor of the college church from 1965 to 1967, taught at Luzon Nazarene Bible College from 1965 to 1973, and also taught at the University of Baguio from 1967 to 1973, all while studying there for a Master of Arts in English.
On 4 April 1973, Stowe ordained Wilfredo as an elder in the Church of the Nazarene on the Philippines District. That year, Manaois was also appointed assistant superintendent of the newly created Visayan Mindanao District, and the Manaoises moved south to Iloilo City to teach at Visayan Nazarene Bible College. Wilfredo then served as superintendent of the Visayan Mindanao District from 1974 to 1976 while also serving as the director of VNBC for one year.
After completing church growth classes under missiologist Donald McGavran through a Fuller Theological Seminary extension program in 1976, the Visayan Mindanao District was sub-divided with Manaois serving as the inaugural superintendent of the Western Visayas District.
“For the first years after the division, the growth in the Visayas and Mindanao was among the fastest in the country among evangelical churches and in the Nazarene denomination as a whole,” Floyd Cunningham wrote in his book Holiness Abroad: Nazarene Missions in Asia.
As a result, in 1979 Manaois was appointed by World Mission Executive Director Jerald Johnson to the Resource for Evangelism and Projects team — a group that was responsible for going to countries where missionaries could not serve to introduce local leaders to the Church of the Nazarene.
In 1981, the Manaoises were appointed by the Church of the Nazarene's General Board to serve in Nigeria, where Wilfredo served as missions director and established Nigerian Nazarene Bible College. However, visa problems forced the Manaoises to return to the Philippines in 1982, at which time he completed the requirements for a Doctor of Education in Theology at West Visayas State College. Wilfredo also served as a member of the Commission on Internationalization of the Church of the Nazarene from 1980 to 1985.
Wilfredo went on to teach at Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary.
“At first, he taught general education courses but moved into the Christian Education program,” Cunningham said. “The school called upon him to serve as dean of students, registrar, and assistant to the president. He [also] became full professor [during that time]. While working at APNTS, he pursued Master of Divinity studies, and also a PhD in Asian Studies at Centro Escolar University. For several years, Wilfredo and Lourdes Manaois alternated as pastors of the Diliman Church of the Nazarene."
After graduating from APNTS in 1999, Wilfredo retired at the age of 70.
"I appreciated Dr. Manaois as a colleague and mentor,” Cunningham said. “He contributed much to my life and to the life of APNTS. His advice and wisdom as part of the APNTS administration and faculty was always well-taken. He will be missed."
After his official retirement, Wilfredo continued to preach in both the Philippines and the U.S. as his health allowed.
Wilfredo is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lourdes Perez Gayo Manaois, and their six adult children — Aaron Manaois, Arlette Pabon, Rodi Jane Manaois, Flora Beth Manaois Liggeti, Lillian Ruth Manaois Katalbas, and Julie Manaois.
A wake and service were held each evening from 27 to 31 August at the Manaois ancestral home in Enclaro, Philippines. The funeral service will be held 1 September at the Binalbagan Church of the Nazarene with Floyd Cunningham speaking. (Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary via NCN News submissions) Read more

Venezuela organizes 60 VBS camps amid economic crisis

At least 60 Vacation Bible Schools representing 75 percent of the country’s organized churches have been planned through September.
Many residents have emigrated from the country in search of better work opportunities, resulting in a rapid decline in public school attendance and an estimated 20 percent membership decline in the Church of the Nazarene in Venezuela.
Despite the economy, the work of Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries International has not stopped, and the regional, national, and district coordinators are working on ways to promote and support these VBS camps.
The Church of the Nazarene in Calabozo has already held two camps, including one at a church plant in Ciudad de Dios for 200 children. The other was held the following week, hosting 179 children and youth.
In the eastern part of the country, the Renacer church in Punta de Mata held a VBS where 70 children and youth participated. In the Llanos District, which has the largest number of Churches of the Nazarene in Venezuela, the Cambios and Los Pozones churches held their VBS camps, with 70 and 84 children, respectively. Most of the other churches will wait until after the National Youth Camp during the last week of August to host their own VBS camps.
“We thank the Lord for so many workers who have made their time, energy, and resources available to plant the seed of God’s Word in the generations to come,” said Leda DeGouveia, national SDMI coordinator. “We are counting on your support in prayer that our God would revive His work in the midst of times like these.” (Church of the Nazarene South America Read more)

International librarians establish library at NTC-Auckland
For nearly three years, Nazarene Theological College has flourished on its Auckland, New Zealand, campus, but something was missing — a library. For nearly three years, Nazarene Theological College has flourished on its Auckland, New Zealand, campus, but something was missing – a library.
Lon Dagley, a computer services librarian from MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kansas, USA, partnered with NTC-Auckland in gathering books from personal collections, Nazarene libraries in the U.S., and from NTC’s main campus in Brisbane, Australia.
Dagley and others spent years sending boxes or suitcases filled with books to the newly planted campus. Then in December, a shipment of 2,700 books arrived, leaving the school without an efficient way to organize the collection.
That is when Dagley reached out to librarians Debra Bradshaw at Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri, USA; Noreen Del Rosario from Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary in Manila, Philippines; and Meagan Towle, a high school librarian from Lenexa, Kansas, USA, to help catalog the books.
“It stretched my library skills beyond their limits,” Del Rosario said. “It was really hard work. The impossible was made possible through God’s strength.”
After two weeks, a total of 4,413 books and a newly acquired computer and scanner were ready for the school year. Nearly a dozen bags were filled with duplicate books to transport to other NTC sites across the region.
“It was a miracle we got it all done,” Bradshaw said.
Now, classes on the Auckland campus are underway, and the future pastors and church leaders have access to an abundance of resources thanks to book donations and the efforts of a few librarians from around the world. (Church of the Nazarene Asia-Pacific) Read more

Paulistano District hosts training event for youth called to missions
More than 100 students attended the seventh annual Teen Missions School, a training program for youth and adolescents who feel a call to missions.More than 100 students attended the seventh annual Teen Missions School, a training program for youth and adolescents who feel a call to missions.
The 15-day program, held 16-28 July in São Paulo, Brazil, taught the participants about holiness, devotional life, discipleship, and what it means to be a missionary. The school features a three-year program that takes place each July, and students work through one level each year — basic, advanced, and ultra.
In addition to classes, students can choose from four art disciplines to specialize in: dance, praise, theater, and circus. Students are also encouraged to seek alone time with God during the program to attune their hearts to God’s.
Maryana Balliaro recently completed her third year.
“God showed me my missionary call [through TMS],” Balliaro said. “I came back transformed. The Lord spoke to me through devotions and lessons, through the praise workshop, and this was very important to me because it helped me in my spiritual growth.”
Gabriel Moutinho just finished his second year at TMS. He says TMS has affirmed his pastoral call and has helped him understand that support for missionary work begins in the local church.
“God has placed in my heart a program for my local church, along with the help of my [Nazarene Missions International] leader, [for] a mission preparatory course,” Moutinho said. “It will be open to every church. We will present mission-related matters, both theoretical and practical, and show the church the importance of them.”
Brenda Vieira, a TMS graduate, believes the program provides valuable fellowship and training for teens throughout the district.
“[Since TMS started in 2011, hundreds of] lives have been impacted, hearts transformed, and a generation [has been] called to holiness and qualified for service,” Vieira said. (Church of the Nazarene South America) Read more

Flags of the Nations: Australia
The flag of Australia features a blue field with the Union Jack in the upper left quarter and a large white seven-pointed star known as the Commonwealth Star in the lower left quarter. The right side of the flag contains a representation of the Southern Cross constellation, made up of five white stars – one small five-pointed star and four, larger, seven-pointed stars.
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Australia
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Australia in 1946.
Australia had a population of 23,232,413 in 2017. That same year, Australia reported 38 Churches of the Nazarene, 32 of which had been officially organized. Australia has 1,257 total members.
Australia has two Phase 2 districts. It is a part of the Asia-Pacific Region.

Guyana volunteers reach communities, assist churches
A team of 16 people from the Guyana Demerara-Essequibo District led by Nazarene Missions International District President Augustus Andrews and District Superintendent R. Alphonso Porter traveled 11-17 August to Linden, Guyana, for a missions trip.
The group began their trip by worshipping with four local churches on Sunday morning and attended evening services at three of them. Many current church members renewed their commitment to the Lord during the worship services, and several new Christians gave their lives to Christ.
The team then volunteered at the Wismar and Christianburg Vacation Bible School camps, which served about 100 children. Between the two camps, 18 children gave their lives to the Lord. In the evening services, 37 people renewed their commitment to the Lord and 18 people accepted Christ as their Savior for the first time.
The volunteers also made house visits to community members in Christianburg, praying for them and inviting them to the church services. In Wismar, volunteers distributed food baskets to more than 40 houses, painted the church fence, and refinished the church floors.
"The team was well received, and their hard work was well appreciated by the churches in the Linden area,” Andrews said. “They are truly grateful to God for moving miraculously as they prepared to be used by Him.” (Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica) Read more

Haiti churches emphasize community development
Nazarene Compassionate Ministries in Haiti organized a community development training event for more than 50 people at the Petionville Church of the Nazarene in Port-au-Prince, 13-17 August.
The conference featured a series of workshops designed to train district leaders to develop their churches and communities during times of both growth and disaster.
They also participated in morning devotionals and nightly worship services where Mesoamerica Regional Director Carlos Sáenz preached the message.
The workshop speakers organized lessons and facilitated question and answer sessions on the following topics:
  • Disaster response
  • Project development
  • WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene)
  • Community development
  • Thinking and living out of the ordinary in leadership
How does the church hurt those who help?“These leaders were satisfied with the conference and want to have that kind of activity again so that more people in the district can benefit from it,” said Emmanuel Jeannite, Nazarene Compassionate Ministries coordinator in Haiti. (Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica) Read more

South America coordinators train on using media for ministry
Communications coordinators from nine different countries across South America gathered in Pilar, Argentina, 16 August for a regional communications training program.
Workshop topics included screenplay, videography, photography, audio production, and the history of cinema.
“Cinema is a very important tool these days, and the influence it has in any society is something that we cannot deny,” said Carlos Juárez, a member of the regional communications staff. “The church can use this tool to reach people with a different, creative message but in a language that people are accustomed to understanding.”
The coordinators shared their experiences and collaborated on future regional communications initiatives. They also filmed and produced a short film that will be edited and distributed on the internet.
After the training, each coordinator was assigned specific goals and objectives for ministry based on their country’s needs. Moving forward, they will meet regularly to help one another achieve these goals and to fellowship as a team. (Church of the Nazarene South America) Read more
