Too Little Too Late: Bankruptcy Booms Among Older Americans
The New York Times | August 5, 2018

"For a rapidly growing share of older Americans, traditional ideas about life in retirement are being upended by a dismal reality: bankruptcy. The signs of potential trouble - vanishing pensions, soaring medical expenses, inadequate savings - have been building for years. Now, new research sheds light on the scope of the problem: The rate of people 65 and older filing for bankruptcy is three times what it was in 1991, and the same group accounts for a far greater share of all filers."
Obstacles to Practicing Kindness in Caregiving
Caregiver SOS | August 3, 2018

"Being a primary caregiver can be a thankless job - particularly when you're doing the best you can, and it's still not enough. Family dynamics can be treacherous. Other family members may have very strong opinions about how they think things should be handled. Fortunate is the family that can work together for the greatest good without breaking the ties that bind."
Caring for an Aging Parent Can Unite Siblings - Or Deepen Divides
Considerable | July 31, 2018

"Resentments often run high when the major caregiver, typically the adult daughter who lives closest to the parent, feels as if he or she is doing everything, says Lynn Feinberg, senior strategic policy advisor at AARP. And often care needs to be sorted out at a moment's notice when a parent has been hospitalized. "It can become stressful, challenging, and emotional, because you're dealing with complex family systems, often anticipating the loss of a parent,' says Feinberg."

Designing a Medicare Help at Home Benefit: Lessons from Maryland's Community First Choice Program
Medicare does not cover home- and community-based services (HCBS) that help beneficiaries function independently at home. The financial burden of uncovered personal care services puts beneficiaries with physical or cognitive impairment at risk of nursing home placement. Results from a program in Maryland suggest that a Medicare benefit to cover at-home personal care services could be feasible. The Commonwealth Fund recently published a study of Maryland's program with implications for expansion. Learn more HERE.
