Children are the best teachers of joy. I was reminded of this truth recently when I found an old sermon.
In the sermon, I was making the point that the most important people in the synagogue are not the board members or donors—they are the children. They make a church or synagogue timeless.
So I told a story about my daughter listening to a CD when we heard the Jewish Hanukkah song Dreidel Dreidel. When she heard it, she said "Daddy sings that at temple." Of course, I said. We laughed.
A week later, I tell her I'm going over to temple. She replies, "Oh yeah…to sing songs." Now, every time I or anyone else asks her what daddy does at temple, she says "sing songs."
To be honest, that is what I strive to do. To sing God's song; to bring others into that song; to inspire others with its melody, and to ensure that the song is taught to the next generation.
