Embrace Holy Living - Reflecting God - WordAction - The Nazarene Publishing House - The Global Church of the Nazarene in Kansas City, Missouri, United States from Saturday, 3 June 2017 through Monday, 5 June 2017-------"Nullify the Law?" by Phil Pinckard for Tuesday, 6 June 2017
Romans 3:21 But now, quite apart from Torah, God’s way of making people righteous in his sight has been made clear — although the Torah and the Prophets give their witness to it as well — 22 and it is a righteousness that comes from God, through the faithfulness of Yeshua the Messiah, to all who continue trusting. For it makes no difference whether one is a Jew or a Gentile, 23 since all have sinned and come short of earning God’s praise. 24 By God’s grace, without earning it, all are granted the status of being considered righteous before him, through the act redeeming us from our enslavement to sin that was accomplished by the Messiah Yeshua. 25 God put Yeshua forward as the kapparah for sin through his faithfulness in respect to his bloody sacrificial death. This vindicated God’s righteousness; because, in his forbearance, he had passed over [with neither punishment nor remission] the sins people had committed in the past; 26 and it vindicates his righteousness in the present age by showing that he is righteous himself and is also the one who makes people righteous on the ground of Yeshua’s faithfulness.
27 So what room is left for boasting? None at all! What kind of Torah excludes it? One that has to do with legalistic observance of rules? No, rather, a Torah that has to do with trusting. 28 Therefore, we hold the view that a person comes to be considered righteous by God on the ground of trusting, which has nothing to do with legalistic observance of Torah commands.Romans 3:21 But now, quite apart from Torah, God’s way of making people righteous in his sight has been made clear — although the Torah and the Prophets give their witness to it as well — 22 and it is a righteousness that comes from God, through the faithfulness of Yeshua the Messiah, to all who continue trusting.
29 Or is God the God of the Jews only? Isn’t he also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, he is indeed the God of the Gentiles; 30 because, as you will admit, God is one.[Romans 3:30 Deuteronomy 6:4] Therefore, he will consider righteous the circumcised on the ground of trusting and the uncircumcised through that same trusting. 31 Does it follow that we abolish Torah by this trusting? Heaven forbid! On the contrary, we confirm Torah.

Every contest from the schoolyard to the courtroom, has someone who arbitrates on behalf of the integrity of the enterprise. In sports, decisions of the field judge, referee, or umpire are final. In court the judge’s decision is supreme.
As Christians we are responsible for either nullifying or upholding the law. “But now God’s righteousness has been revealed apart from the Law, which is confirmed by the Law and the Prophets” (Rom. 3:21). Jesus Christ is the faithful, supreme advocate of righteousness. Upholding the law is more than legalism; it becomes grace-filled and freeing, like a child who discovers he can do anything he wants if he acts within the limits of his parents’ will. Have you discovered the freedom of God’s righteousness?
Glorious Freedom" by Haldor Lillenas
1. Once I was bound by sin’s galling fetters,
Chained like a slave, I struggled in vain;
But I received a glorious freedom,
When Jesus broke my fetters in twain.
Refrain:
Glorious freedom, wonderful freedom,
No more in chains of sin I repine!
Jesus the glorious Emancipator,
Now and forever He shall be mine.
2. Freedom from all the carnal affections,
Freedom from envy, hatred and strife;
Freedom from vain and worldly ambitions,
Freedom from all that saddened my life.
Refrain:
Glorious freedom, wonderful freedom,
No more in chains of sin I repine!
Jesus the glorious Emancipator,
Now and forever He shall be mine.
3. Freedom from pride and all sinful follies,
Freedom from love and glitter of gold;
Freedom from evil, temper, and anger,
Glorious freedom, rapture untold.
Refrain:
Glorious freedom, wonderful freedom,
No more in chains of sin I repine!
Jesus the glorious Emancipator,
Now and forever He shall be mine.
4. Freedom from fear with all of its torments,
Freedom from care with all of its pain;
Freedom in Christ, my blessed Redeemer,
He who has rent my fetters in twain.
Refrain:
Glorious freedom, wonderful freedom,
No more in chains of sin I repine!
Jesus the glorious Emancipator,
Now and forever He shall be mine.
What the Messiah has freed us for is freedom! Therefore, stand firm, and don’t let yourselves be tied up again to a yoke of slavery. [Galatians 5:1].
Pleas pray:
That many people in Burundi will come to know Yeshua the Messiah and receive the fullness of the Ruach HaKadosh.

"Least in the Kingdom" by Phil Pinckard for Monday, 5 June 2017
Matthew 5:17 “Don’t think that I have come to abolish the Torah or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to complete. 18 Yes indeed! I tell you that until heaven and earth pass away, not so much as a yud or a stroke will pass from the Torah — not until everything that must happen has happened. 19 So whoever disobeys the least of these mitzvot and teaches others to do so will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But whoever obeys them and so teaches will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness is far greater than that of the Torah-teachers and P’rushim, you will certainly not enter the Kingdom of Heaven!
21 “You have heard that our fathers were told, ‘Do not murder,’[Matthew 5:21 Exodus 20:13, Deuteronomy 5:17] and that anyone who commits murder will be subject to judgment. 22 But I tell you that anyone who nurses anger against his brother will be subject to judgment; that whoever calls his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing!’ will be brought before the Sanhedrin; that whoever says, ‘Fool!’ incurs the penalty of burning in the fire of Gei-Hinnom! 23 So if you are offering your gift at the Temple altar and you remember there that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift where it is by the altar, and go, make peace with your brother. Then come back and offer your gift. 25 If someone sues you, come to terms with him quickly, while you and he are on the way to court; or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer of the court, and you may be thrown in jail! 26 Yes indeed! I tell you, you will certainly not get out until you have paid the last penny.
27 “You have heard that our fathers were told, ‘Do not commit adultery.’[Matthew 5:27 Exodus 20:13(14); Deuteronomy 5:17(18)] 28 But I tell you that a man who even looks at a woman with the purpose of lusting after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye makes you sin, gouge it out and throw it away! Better that you should lose one part of you than have your whole body thrown into Gei-Hinnom. 30 And if your right hand makes you sin, cut it off and throw it away! Better that you should lose one part of you than have your whole body thrown into Gei-Hinnom.
31 “It was said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife must give her a get.’[Matthew 5:31 Deuteronomy 24:1] 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of fornication, makes her an adulteress; and that anyone who marries a divorcee commits adultery.

Those who teach bear a sacred responsibility. A reputable teacher checks facts, quotations and sources. Those in the media usually verify their stories from at least three sources before broadcasting or publishing material. An author friend of mine spends many hours checking quotations, sources and facts. Accuracy is primary. Inattention to accuracy leads to fuzzy and slothful learning.
So it is with holy living. Jesus understood and modeled this truth. Setting aside commands, however slight, has profound consequences. Sooner or later disobedience will result. Holiness is a matter of the heart and the heart of the matter. Solomon advised “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life” (Proverbs 4:23). How well are you keeping His commands and therefore, guarding your heart?

Hymn for Today: "O for a Heart to Praise My God" by Charles Wesley
1. O for a heart to praise my God,
a heart from sin set free,
a heart that always feels thy blood
so freely shed for me.
2. A heart resigned, submissive, meek,
my great Redeemer's throne,
where only Christ is heard to speak,
where Jesus reigns alone.
3. A humble, lowly, contrite heart,
believing, true, and clean,
which neither life nor death can part
from Christ who dwells within.
4. A heart in every thought renewed
and full of love divine,
perfect and right and pure and good,
a copy, Lord, of thine.
5. Thy nature, gracious Lord, impart;
come quickly from above;
write thy new name upon my heart,
thy new, best name of Love.
Therefore, encourage each other, and build each other up — just as you are doing.[1 Thessalonians 5:11].

Matthew 5:1 Seeing the crowds, Yeshua walked up the hill. After he sat down, his talmidim came to him, 2 and he began to speak. This is what he taught them:
3 “How blessed are the poor in spirit!
for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
4 “How blessed are those who mourn!
for they will be comforted.
5 “How blessed are the meek!
for they will inherit the Land![Matthew 5:5 Psalm 37:11]
6 “How blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness!
for they will be filled.
7 “How blessed are those who show mercy!
for they will be shown mercy.
8 “How blessed are the pure in heart!
for they will see God.
9 “How blessed are those who make peace!
for they will be called sons of God.
10 “How blessed are those who are persecuted
because they pursue righteousness!
for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
11 “How blessed you are when people insult you and persecute you and tell all kinds of vicious lies about you because you follow me! 12 Rejoice, be glad, because your reward in heaven is great — they persecuted the prophets before you in the same way. 13 “You are salt for the Land. But if salt becomes tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything except being thrown out for people to trample on.
14 “You are light for the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Likewise, when people light a lamp, they don’t cover it with a bowl but put it on a lampstand, so that it shines for everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before people, so that they may see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.

The adult Sunday School class I am privileged to teach is named the “Salt and Light” class. They are a remarkable group from a wide variety of backgrounds: business owners and bus drivers, realtors and retired military, medical and educational professionals, volunteers, homemakers, and housekeepers. Yet, we all have a remarkable hunger to learn and live out the truth of God’s Word. Though very different we are all “Salt and Light.”
It is easy to read the beatitudes as a sort of spiritual menu: “I’ll take a big helping of mercy, with a side of meekness, and a tall glass of pure in heart.” No, it doesn’t work that way. The beatitudes aren’t designed to gratify our spiritual yearning du jour. They are a description of what it means to be like Christ in the world: to live out life with its struggles and sacrifices as those who are part of His “inbreaking kingdom.”
Among other things, salt enhances the flavor of food and can also be a preservative. Light illuminates the darkness and nourishes life. Each is transformational, which is what we as Christ’s followers are to be in our world.

"No Accommodation for Jesus" by Duane Brush for Saturday, 3 June 2017
Hebrews 11:29 By trusting, they walked through the Red Sea as through dry land; when the Egyptians tried to do it, the sea swallowed them up.
30 By trusting, the walls of Yericho fell down — after the people had marched around them for seven days.
31 By trusting, Rachav the prostitute welcomed the spies and therefore did not die along with those who were disobedient.
32 What more should I say? There isn’t time to tell about Gid‘on, Barak, Shimshon, Yiftach, David, Sh’mu’el and the prophets; 33 who, through trusting, conquered kingdoms, worked righteousness, received what was promised, shut the mouths of lions,[Hebrews 11:33 Daniel 6:23(22)] 34 quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, had their weakness turned to strength, grew mighty in battle and routed foreign armies. 35 Women received back their dead resurrected; other people were stretched on the rack and beaten to death, refusing to be ransomed, so that they would gain a better resurrection. 36 Others underwent the trials of being mocked and whipped, then chained and imprisoned. 37 They were stoned, sawed in two, murdered by the sword; they went about clothed in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted, mistreated, 38 wandering about in deserts and mountains, living in caves and holes in the ground! The world was not worthy of them!
39 All of these had their merit attested because of their trusting. Nevertheless, they did not receive what had been promised, 40 because God had planned something better that would involve us, so that only with us would they be brought to the goal.

Some employees at a large international banking firm met weekly for Bible study and prayer on their lunch hour. They used an available conference room for their meetings. This all ended when an executive who attended the group received an email from the human resources department informing him that “the group was not allowed to have organized religious meetings on-site.”* This despite the fact that other groups formed around race or sexual identity were permitted. Laws protecting religious expression at work require employers to make a “reasonable accommodation” for those beliefs. The interpretation of what constitutes a “reasonable accommodation” varies widely by company or location.
Jesus knew it would be this way. Some are denied far more than a meeting room. He warned His followers they could be insulted, persecuted, even lied about for His name’s sake. He told them to count it a blessing, "Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you8" [Matthew 5:12]. They are in good company. With all true believers they have “an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade” (1 Peter 1:4).

Hymn for Today: "Have You Any Room For Jesus?" by Anonymous, adapted by Daniel W. Whittle
1. Have you any room for Jesus,
He who bore your load of sin?
As He knocks and asks admission,
Sinner, will you let Him in?
Refrain:
Room for Jesus, King of Glory!
Hasten now, His Word obey.
Swing the heart’s door widely open;
Bid Him enter while you may.
