Indianapolis, Indiana
BGS: General Assembly prayer opportunities
There are numerous opportunities for prayer during the 29th General Assembly and Conventions as thousands of Nazarenes gather in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, for times of fellowship, training, worship, and business.
The Board of General Superintendents emphasized the importance of prayer for this event by asking Nazarenes around the world to set aside every Friday afternoon — from 24 March through 23 June — as a time of fasting and prayer for General Assembly 2017 and to pray daily during the assembly, Sunday, 25 June through Thursday, 29 June.
The words of Phineas F. Bresee, the denomination’s first general superintendent, remain true today: “These are days that call for Spirit-filled men and women who pray in the Holy Ghost and expect and receive great things from God.”
Before each service, visitors and delegates are encouraged to gather for the Pre-Service Concerts of Prayer. These times of guided intercession will begin precisely 30 minutes prior to each service and last 15 minutes.
The Concerts of Prayer will be held in the same location as the services — Halls HIJK — on the left-hand side of the auditorium near the stage.
Times are as follows:
- Thursday 22 June, 6:30 to 6:45 p.m.
- Friday 23 June, 6:30 to 6:45 p.m.
- Saturday 24 June, 6:30 to 6:45 p.m.
- Sunday 25 June, 9:30 to 9:45 a.m. | 3:30 to 3:45 p.m.
The final Concert of Prayer will be held prior to the opening General Assembly business session in Halls ABC from 8:00 to 8:15 a.m. Monday 26 June.
Two other locations have been set aside for prayer. The 24/7 Prayer Room, located in the Westin Hotel Senate I, II, III, will be available 21-28 June for private prayer. Each evening, from 9:30 to 10:30 p.m., there will be a time of corporate prayer. From 21-26 June, Hal Perkins will lead a morning devotional from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. in the Westin.
In the Indiana Convention Center, Show Office 1 on the second floor will be open 21-26 June from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The room will include Bibles in multiple languages, a basket to leave prayer requests, specific prayer topics from the Board of General Superintendents, and a historic altar used by Phineas Bresee at camp meetings in 1904 and 1905.

Glasgow, Scotland
Glasgow church opens doors to asylum seekers
On any given night when a football (soccer) game is on TV, you might find 40 to 50 men watching together at Parkhead Church of the Nazarene in the east end of Glasgow, Scotland. Some are Scottish, others are living as refugees from countries including Syria and Sudan.
“For the East Enders of Glasgow to meet football-mad Syrians and Sudanese — that’s a foretaste of heaven for us,” said Dave White, a pastor at the church.
Refugees in Glasgow typically find the church through its English as a Second Language ministry and form relationships from there. While the men play or watch football, women get together to relax. One woman at the church has even partnered with other groups to provide swimming lessons — something the women wouldn’t feel comfortable doing in mixed-gender groups.
The church is located in a working-class neighborhood consisting mainly of locals. East End natives may normally not have interacted with the “other,” but the church is being transformed by its ministry.

Hassan* came to Scotland from Sudan about a year ago. At only 23, he has already had to run from people wielding AK-47s. He crossed into Europe in an unsafe boat and survived a steady stream of hardships.
After landing, Hassan made his way to England, where he claimed asylum before being sent to Glasgow, the only city in Scotland welcoming refugees at the time. There, he got connected with the Parkhead church.
Hassan longs for a family of his own while grieving those he has lost. His father was killed as he watched in Sudan, and he recently learned that a younger brother was also killed while Hassan was gone. His mother and younger siblings are still in Sudan, far away and in constant danger.
The church is embracing Hassan as one of their own. There, he can receive prayer and care, play football, and share food. Someday, he hopes to be able to provide more for his mother and siblings. For now, he is learning what it means to be a part of God’s family, too.
“My deep prayer is that [Hassan] will understand the real love of God from the Christians who love and show grace,” White said.

Sometimes, refugees and asylum seekers are moved to other areas of the city. The strength of the church community is shown by the fact that many will travel 30 to 50 minutes to return regularly.
The church’s goal is simple: To sow seeds of welcome. Those living as refugees have been through terrible ordeals and arrive with nothing. The church is becoming a place where refugees know they can find people who want to welcome them.
“It’s beautiful to see how hearts have been stirred to serve,” White said. “It’s lovely.”

Flags of the Nations: Togo
The flag of Togo features a white "Star of Hope" on a field of red, representing the blood shed by countrymen during the internal struggle for independence. Green is symbolic of the country's agricultural wealth, while yellow is symbolic of mineral wealth. The five horizontal stripes represent the five regions of Togo.
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Togo
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Togo in 1998.
Togo had a population of 7,756,937 in 2016. That same year, Togo reported 168 Churches of the Nazarene, 66 of which had been officially organized. Togo has 7,002 total members.
Located on the Africa Region, Togo has two Pioneer Areas. For more information about the Africa Region, visit africanazarene.org.
* = The weekly highlighted flag is raised on the middle of three poles in compliance with U.S. government protocols. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. The Christian flag flies on the third pole.

Kosova, Eurasia Region
Kosova Nazarenes bring greenhouses to struggling communities
Kosovar Nazarenes are using greenhouses to bring food security to local families overcoming economic challenges. As part of the Central Europe Field’s Flourishing Church Initiative, the Kosova Greenhouse Project allows Churches of the Nazarene to provide practical and compassionate resources to the community.
Utilizing the interconnected dynamic of the Kosovar culture, Nazarenes planned to connect three greenhouses to impoverished families living in economically struggling neighborhoods. The Kosovar church submitted a three-year initiative to Nazarene Compassionate Ministries.
Families are chosen based on their needs, such as orphans, widows, or families with a sick member. The chosen family hosts a greenhouse on their property and blesses other needy families with some of the produce for the next three years. The host family reinvests 15 percent of sales back into the fund and commits their time to help build the next one. Local Nazarenes stay connected throughout the entire process.

Thanks to the willingness of local people and businesses to donate and reduce supply costs, the number of greenhouses has increased to five within the project's first year. The response of the people exemplifies a compassionate faith community.
“I did not know that we could do a project like this, but as we see its impact, we are realizing that NCM creates so many global opportunities to make a difference,” said Selim Kolgeci, co-creator of the Kosova Greenhouse Project and pastor of Suhareka Church of the Nazarene. “In our country context, NCM is effective because it is based upon both compassion and promoting Jesus.”
Kolgeci and co-creator Sarah Thibault said their expectations have been exceeded in several key ways, including generous actions from the community and high involvement from church members.
“Everybody in the church has gotten involved,” Thibault said. “From spreading manure to working the ground to donating agricultural expertise — and the results are exciting. Families from the first two greenhouses donated 100 kilograms of food to other families in the first year.”
The Greenhouse Project develops resources and relationships while limiting the possibility of church dependency, stepping towards the end goal of a flourishing church and community. [Church of the Nazarene Eurasia] Read more
