Resurrection West,
Greetings from Grand Island, Nebraska! I am at the Great Plains Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church where we are conducting the business of our Conference (Kansas and Nebraska). It's always a great time to celebrate ordinations, spend time with colleagues in ministry, and celebrate that we are a lay-led church as clergy and lay delegates discern through prayer and discussion the important work of the church!
On Sunday we grow even more ‘Upside Down’ as we continue our series focus on Jesus’ parables to change our thinking and doing as his disciples. Last week we looked at the ‘parables of the kingdom’ found in Matthew 13. We continue in Matthew’s Gospel as Jesus paints a picture of a wedding banquet (dinner party in Luke’s Gospel) with a message titled ‘Did You Remember to RSVP?’. It’s wedding season and I’m honored to officiate a wedding this weekend. There will surely be tears, laughter, and a great celebration with the couple, and their family and friends. Weddings are meant to be a glimpse into the kingdom of God! It’s one of those powerful and emotive moments when the people closest to us celebrate with us. Throughout scriptures we see Christ (the bridegroom) declaring his love for the bride (the church). And remember, Jesus performs his first miracle at a wedding celebration. What do we learn from this? How do we live our lives differently because of it? How do we share the joy of His kingdom with our friends and neighbors? Come this Sunday and let’s learn and celebrate together. We have some fun surprises (and a new initiative to bring joy to our neighborhoods) planned for each service, so come prepared for kingdom fun!!
Then the following Sunday, June 18th, we will celebrate fathers! We want to share photos of dad (similar to what we did on Mother’s day to celebrate mom). To acknowledge a father in your life, submit one photo (per family) of him by June 15th to our Director of Worship Arts, Lindsay Hefner, at lindsay.hefner@cor.org.
We are having a contest! If your child or teen didn’t get their sunglasses yet, be sure to pick them up Sunday. We want to invite you to share your fun sunglass pics through June for our Instagram Photo Contest – Post your photos to your accounts, tag @rezwest, @churchoftherez, use #rezshinesbright. Here are the themes:
