for Tuesday, 11 July 2017 - Proverbs 4:1 Listen, children, to a father’s instruction;
pay attention, in order to gain insight;
2 for I am giving you good advice;
so don’t abandon my teaching.
3 For I too was once a child to my father;
and my mother, too, thought of me as her special darling.
4 He too taught me; he said to me,
“Let your heart treasure my words;
keep my commands, and live;
5 gain wisdom, gain insight;
don’t forget or turn from the words I am saying.
6 Don’t abandon [wisdom]; then she will preserve you;
love her, and she will protect you.
7 The beginning of wisdom is: get wisdom!
And along with all your getting, get insight!
8 Cherish her, and she will exalt you;
embrace her, and she will bring you honor;
9 she will give your head a garland of grace,
bestow on you a crown of glory.”
10 Listen, my son, receive what I say,
and the years of your life will be many.
11 I’m directing you on the way of wisdom,
guiding you in paths of uprightness;
12 when you walk, your step won’t be hindered;
and if you run, you won’t stumble.

We often hear people make the comment, “I would give my right arm for ________.” We may fill in the blank with any number of things. Some would fill in the blank with precious gems or a work of art. Others might complete the phrase with the latest technology gadget on the market. Yet others might suggest an expensive car. However we might complete the sentence, the implication is that the desired object is extremely costly, the price being much more than we could ever hope to have. Some people have given up great sums to have that object they desire most.
Proverbs chapter four teaches us that there is something more desirable and more valuable than any material object that we could imagine. More precious and profitable than anything else in the entire world is wisdom.
King Solomon instructs us that wisdom will be a source of honor, of exaltation, of righteousness, of life itself. Wisdom is to be sought after no matter what it costs us. Later on, in Proverbs 9:10, he reminds us that “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Seeking the Lord with our whole heart is the wisest thing we can do.
"Unsearchable Riches" by Fanny J. Crosby
1. Oh, the unsearchable riches of Christ!
Wealth that can never be told;
Riches exhaustless or mercy and grace,
Precious, more precious than gold!
Refrain:
Precious, more precious,
Wealth that can never be told!
Oh, the unsearchable riches of Christ!
Precious, more precious than gold!
2. Oh, the unsearchable riches of Christ,
Who shall their greatness declare?
Jewels whose luster our lives may adorn,
Pearls that the poorest may wear!

Now if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives to all generously and without reproach; and it will be given to him.[James 1:5].
