Trinity United Methodist Church Daily Scripture Email Devotion for Tuesday, 27 May 2014 "Holding on to God"
Job's wife said to him, "Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!" (Job 2:9).
There are untold numbers of persons who are far from God and far from the Church because tragedy struck and they blamed God. I wish I could sit across from everyone of them and listen to their heart and then say as sensitively and boldly as I can: "God did not cause this." God's love for you is more real than ever; God's tears have mingled with yours."
Or, even more tragic is this response: "What did I do to cause this terrible thing to happen to me, or to cause God to do this to me?" No!! A thousand times No! Please remove this unfortunate, misconception forever from your heart and mind! And please disabuse others of this wrong headed idea. God isn't like that! God doesn't behave that way. As a God who IS love, God acts only in loving ways. And while that doesn't answer every question that arises when tragedy occurs, it appropriately leaves the rest to the realm of mystery.
Remember: One big worship service on June 1 at 10:00 to celebrate our mortgage burning; followed by lunch for everyone.
